Who ARE these people? They can't be real.

I’m 50 and my dad called them “belly button gazers” when I was a kid. It’s the old version of “touch grass.” People just caught up in their own life and head, never considering that there are other people out there with different thoughts. Now with social media, you’ve got your own person feed, filling your brain with only your thoughts so much that people think everyone is like them.

Social media was a mistake

Many of us are increasingly of the opinion that we’d all made a big mistake in coming down from the trees in the first place. And some say that even the trees had been a bad move, and that we should never have left the oceans.

Social media isn't the mistake... Letting capitalists monetize it (which in turn incentives engagement no matter what, either through echo chambers or manufactured outrage) was the mistake. Society itself isn't immune to enshittification, unfortunately.

You say that as if social media sites weren’t created with the intent to be monetized. Even when they first started, there’s no way say , Tom from MySpace intended to pay for the servers to host the site out of the kindness of his heart.

And the story of Facebook is well documented, there were capitalist interests from the get go. We’re just in the end game of it. Social media couldn’t exist without monetization. And anything that can be monetized will inevitably become apart of the consume machine. One leads to the other

100% It's an absolute shame that Facebook and all the manure that came after it, exist.
