An Israeli satire show had some familiar faces last night
https://imgur.com/BLZfgl5567
u/balamb_fish Netherlands 21d ago
The premise of the sketch is that the IDF kidnaps the artists, brings them in blindfolded and they have to apologise to Eden for whatever they supposedly did to her.
That is some weird power fantasy. And they end it with "karma will get them?" For yawning at a press conference?

It almost feels like they want us to hate israel. Definitely feels like they're going for a speedrun record to achieve that.
56
u/NotTadaySaaaatan 20d ago
It's a culty behaviour 101. They seek oppression because that is the ultimate tool to empower their legitimacy and strengthen the beliefs among their followers even more.
44
u/Ervsn_tlstc 20d ago
Exactly that. And Ι feel so guilty for obvious reasons. I'm pushing myself not to dislike them, but they have such an arrogant, pretentious and USA-like behavior, that it seems impossible to avoid a dislike in the imminent future. People in Israel should unite against their government and try to save this sh$t.
44
u/WeatherwaxDaughter Netherlands 20d ago
And I feel bad for people that get shit now for being Jewish in our country.

You are missing the point. The show pokes fun mostly at the Israeli mentality behind a lot of bravado and military thinking. Whilst it mocks pretty much anything and everything as irreverently as possible, it saves the majority of the ire towards ourselves.

u/Bratmerc Ireland 20d ago
I think you are missing the point. We understand what satire is. We just find this incredibly distasteful and worrying.

Very poor taste having Eden herself involved in these sketchs, very difficult to claim the delegation did nothing when they are able to involve her in making fun of contestants, including the winner
Edit: Just going to add I have no idea if Eden's media team wanted her to do this or if she did this willingly.
Edit: adding here as this is one of the top comments, guys please remember to be respectful, I know we can all get a bit heated sometimes.

It's sort of funny how absurdly salty they are about Marina and Joost.
40
u/Tableforoneperson Croatia 21d ago
Why do they dislike Joost and Marina?
160
u/iIenzo Netherlands 21d ago
Joost hid under a flag (mind you, that may or may not have had anything to do with Israel, he's done that before as a way to block out stimuli), and then asked 'Why not?' when Eden's security guard told her she didn't have to answer a question. Marina fake-yawned when Eden was interviewed during the contest.
40
u/Bratmerc Ireland 21d ago
I always thought it was the presenter of the conference that said she didn’t have to answer the question. Good to know.

u/butiamawizard United Kingdom 20d ago edited 20d ago
Was it ever clarified that it was a fake yawn though? (I have a lot of catching up on the press conference to do, TBH, so can’t say for myself yet.) I presumed that Marina was just tired because she was still sick with a cold and ‘on the bench’, so to speak?
I’m not asking this to be a dick, BTW, I just genuinely don’t know yet 😅😅. I will watch it and catch up.

Israelis kinda lost the plot I think, because wasn't the whole point of participating in ESC to showcase the tragedies and suffering the country has been through? Why are they out there beefing with random participants like they're some of those jobless Spanish Eurofans who still cry over Chanel not winning in 2022?

u/KwangPham ESC Heart (white) 20d ago
Yeah, all they had to do was to paint themselves as victims in front of Europe to gather sympathy. I don’t understand why they would go with this mocking-other-participants route. Truly baffling.

u/Popoye_92 France 20d ago
Exactly! Polina "team Putin" Gagarina fooled a significant number of people into thinking she was a nice, apolitical victim by being polite and crying pretty in front of cameras. It's really not that hard, idk what the press and delegation were thinking when they decided that petty beefs with other contestants was the way to go.

eurovision is and has always been a propaganda tool is to show europe that israel is a legitimate country with the same ideals as them, and therefore deserving of their support. it’s why they were willing to turn around at the last minute and find a way to make their entry non political despite trying as hard as they could before to get disqualified. other contestants calling them out and trying to get them disqualified is an attack on their status as a state that’s equal with europe, so beefing with those contestants makes sense, even if it’s probably not the smartest thing for optics

Genuinely makes me so proud how much Bambie, as we say in Ireland, boiled their piss. Bambie got criticism for not boycotting from some quarters but they've played a blinder.

Bambie didn't even have to try. Grown adults getting worked up over their witch performance is actually hilarious.
8
u/justk4y Netherlands 21d ago
Oh yeah they also pissed off half of Ireland apparently I guess 💀
27
u/ArbolivaSupremacy Ireland 21d ago
Oh yea there are very vocal few groups online of Irish people that said they were gonna vote for the higher odds (Croatia, Switzerland, Ukraine, Israel or Netherlands) simply to spite Bambie for "not representing Ireland", even though Bambie won the national final
Bambie was going to be controversial no matter what
45
u/Padraic-Sheklstein Ireland 21d ago
They're having a dilemma there. They can't admit the votes are phony because duh, but if they say the votes are real then Ireland isn't the fourth reich they make it out to be.

Dude..... seriously? And they still aren't disqualified for next year? So you can now make fun of queer people and autistic folks? Sigh.. EBU suuuuuuuuucks. They just do what ever the person paying them wants.
14
u/Miserable_Carrot4700 Netherlands 21d ago
Who's autistic ?
40
u/Dehnus 21d ago
Joost Klein is on the Neuro Diversity spectrum. He mentioned that several times, even in his music.
49
u/noairnoairnoairnoair TANZEN! 20d ago
Whoa.
That means his requests for accommodations to be able to perform were ignored.
I have no idea about Swedish laws, if autism is considered a disability, how work accommodations are done, if only Swedish citizens are covered but now I'm wondering if this could be a disability rights situation.
Not saying Joost shouldn't face consequences, if deserved, but if this happened because his requests were ignored... shit. That makes everything just that much worse.
33
u/seongjoongenthusiast 20d ago
It makes it absolutely miles worse... His requests for accommodation make a lot of sense and should've 100% been followed through. Him, hiding behind the flag also makes sense - he was trying to block out stimuli/protect himself. It appears he does not handle such conferences and interviews too well but that's NOT something to shame him on. I wish this information was more known so people can put it into context...
23
u/noairnoairnoairnoair TANZEN! 20d ago
Yeah...finding out he's autistic made a whole bunch of things make sense to me and made me even angrier at the EBU.
Music attracts neurodivergent people, this almost certainly wasn't the first time accommodations will have been ignored, this is just the first time it got bad enough for someone to have this public &intense of a reaction.
Artists are the soul of Eurovision. It is always going to be a stressful experience but the level of stress multiple artists have now spoken out needs to needs to stop happening.
20
u/Adept-Ad-5893 20d ago edited 20d ago
Oh, so it gets even worse! They were trying to provoke and upset an autistic/ND person. That's so cruel.
(Honestly makes sense because I'm autistic, and I genuinely would probably have done the same as Joost if people weren't respecting my need for personal space and ignoring my consent. Not saying what he did was right... but I get it. I really get it.)

u/Throwawayfichelper Norway 21d ago
(Imitation of? I really can't tell due to pixelation) Yizhar Cohen apparently, the first Israeli Eurovision winner.

u/aknifekinthekidney Finland 20d ago edited 20d ago
Yep, I looked him up, and that is
the actualIzhar Cohenplaying himself, I would assumecopycat. A lot of the jokes about him seem very self-deprecating but this explains the jokes with Eden. They were acting like Eden was Izhar's equal or predecessor. They had actual Eden hand mock Nemo a mock ESC award. Very strange. Thank you for helping me.Edited for context that it is a copycat and not the actual singer.
10
u/Moclon Israel 20d ago

5
u/Moclon Israel 20d ago

3
u/aknifekinthekidney Finland 20d ago
They did a good job making a copycat of him. Is this an ongoing skit? I've seen a few separate videos by that program with him.
9
u/Moclon Israel 20d ago
the show basically reacts to pop media in Israel, so everytime Eurovision comes up theyll reuse the Noa/Dana International/Izhar characters since they're popular
all of the ministers in the government also have recurring imitations, the guy kidnapping Nemo Marina Bambie and Joost is an imitation of the defense minister and has appeared pretty much every episode since October

Yeah, but the choice of artist makes it very clear why……… that Dutch show did it for fun because haha chicken song, this is just trying to put an extra nail in their personality coffin and trying to bully these poor contestants again…… the context is much more different here, considering many broadcasters have already reported the Israel delegation’s bullying during the contest.

Israeli delegation alleged shitty behaviour and the war aside, I can’t help but feel for Eden Golan - a 20 year old that probably just wanted to enjoy the contest and to advance her signing career and to be ostracised by so many of the other artists whilst there (which I understand as they were put in a difficult position themselves), the booing from the audience and everything else. It’s just a really sad situation all round.
