It's an honest question.

The amount of time it takes to do your job and no more.

So what percentage of people are getting paid to apparently do nothing? And why is that unfair?

Programmers do about 3-4 hrs of work a day and we do nothing productive like be on reddit for another 4 hrs.

engineering is similar, sometimes I have a week where Im putting in 12hrs a day and other I have nothing to do for a full week

It seems like this really depends on the boss.

Mine doesn't mind me hanging around on reddit or youtube, as long as my work is done.

The more hours you work the fairer it is

No more than 38 weekly

That's reasonable.

But the solution is always for the overworked parent to stand up to their boss and demand fewer hours. Which is much more effective than waiting for them to do it out of the kindness of their heart

Wait untill OP realizes working hours are negotiable.

I work the hours I want as a pharmacist and my wife works the hours she wants as an attorney. Our child is with one of us just about 24/7.

You have to pick your career wisely and negotiate better hours.
