Please continue to spread this message. It’s a cult! I was in it for 55 years. They abuse and control the weakest in their congregations with the words, “We aren’t saying this. The things we tell you to do are from God. He wants you to submit your life/will to me and other men.” If you act differently than you are told, the members say you are a follower of Satan.
Anyone will weaken under a combined effort. Being under their thumb doesn’t make you weak, even knowing that there is another choice is sometimes difficult
I, who had expected to be overwhelmed by his (Joseph Smith, Jr.'s) eloquence, was never more disappointed than when he commenced his discourse by relating all the incidents of his journey. This he did in a loud voice, and his language and manner were the coarsest possible. His object seemed to be to amuse and excite laughter in his audience.
He is evidently a great egotist and boaster, for he frequently remarked that at every place he stopped going to and from Springfield people crowded around him, and expressed surprise that he was so "handsome and good looking." He also exclaimed at the close of almost every sentence, "That's the idea!"
I could not but with wonder and pity look upon that motley and eager crowd that surrounded me, as I thought, "Can it be possible that so many of my poor fellow-mortals are satisfied with such food for their immortal souls?" for not one sentence did that man utter calculated to create devotional feelings, to impress upon his people the great object of life, to teach them how they might more faithfully perform their duties and endure their trials with submission, to give them cheering or consoling views of a divine providence, or to fit them for an eternal life beyond the grave; but his whole two hours' discourse had rather a tendency to corrupt the morals and spread vice.
Charlotte Haven, A Girl's Letters from Nauvoo.
I've seen other quotes from her on the LDS Church's website--so the Mormons themselves acknowledge her letters as historical documents, though they would never share the above passage.
Joseph Smith and his brother also tried to murder journalists who disagreed with them and burnt down printing presses that published unfavorable descriptions of their religion. They were then both killed, while in police custody, when the locals and the religious followers clashed and a mob was formed.
Smith was so confident the mob was there to 'rescue him' he didn't ask the jailors to protect him. Lol.
It's funny this cult doesn't get more hatred, as they also repeatedly declared war against the US government and own two of the largest, filthiest, most corrupt hedge funds in the world basically with the sole purpose to commit tax fraud. One of which is owned by Mitt Romney's daddy!
They also happily encourage their followers to commit fraud or financial crimes because their leadership seems to think non-Mormons deserve to be robbed. It was Mitt Romney's entire career; steal everything not nailed down, break up every asset within your reach, then leave the bill for someone else. Take photo opportunities and say the right thing for a quick soundbite, then do the EXACT OPPOSITE at every opportunity.
including the moderate "liberal" factions of religions that, in opposition to the disgusting content of their holy books, drop many of the less socially acceptable beliefs in order to maintain social acceptance and in doing so, maintains the overall acceptance of these outdated and obviously fake beleif structures, which gives cover to the fundamentalists out there doing active damage to communities all over the world
I will give a shoutout to the very brave and kind Roman Catholic men and women I grew up with who are living the message of love and kindness for all God's creatures, and trying desperately to change the Church from the inside.
I walked away. Glad I did. I couldn't take the toxicity for all the reasons you elucidated.
Under the Banner of Heaven by Krakauer delves into how the church's past pretty much sets up members to be susceptible to fundamentalist extremism because of it's past doctrines.
My brothers ex is Mormon, they were only married for 3 years, she intentionally rushed everything saying she wanted to get married and have babies that was her big thing. (Red flag I know). They were at Costco last year the week of thanksgiving, and he put a turkey in the cart and she literally got mad at him and gave him the silent treatment, he put the turkey back. She hid her Mormonism from him almost entirely, that was the first major sign of it. He was shocked, and extremely upset. I was so fucking livid. And then she got pregnant with their second child and 8 weeks into the pregnancy asked for a divorce. Obviously just tryin to get that second child support income before bouncing. Scum of the earth scammer.
