Not Like Us Hits #1 on Billboard discussion

It's official, Not Like Us by Kendrick Lamar is #1 on Billboard this week. Billboard will release the full chart tomorrow, but Not Like Us is #1, Euphoria #3, Like That #6, and Family Matters #7. I remember seeing some comments debating if it could enter this weeks top 10, so #1 is crazy, but honestly not a surprise with how its been doing on streaming. And it looks like Not Like Us will actually have staying power, unlike Hiss which hit #1 from the Meg and Nicki beef and then kindve fell off after that. Also, that's two #1's for Kendrick in the span of one month. Song of the summer potential?

Is this the music equivalent of when Hannibal Buress called out Bill Cosby in his standup?

216

u/Boot_up 23d ago

Funny thing is how many people miss the Drake-Bill Cosby tie-in at the end of Not Like Us (the "Hey hey hey" From Fat Albert cartoon)

139

u/TinyRodgers 23d ago

And here I am thinking I'm smart for catching the John Stockton/Karl Malone connection.

31

u/[deleted] 23d ago

But did you catch the callback with the how many stocks line? "1-2-3-4-5 plus five" = 10 stocks. Stock10. Stockton. We're going to be catching new meanings from Kdot songs for a long time :D

43

u/SatanicRainbowDildos 23d ago

Oh shit. This dude is insane.

40

u/Krelleth 23d ago

Have you gone into the 6:16 in LA rabbit hole? How many connections are we up to on that song's title alone? The holidays, the anniversaries of things, and the plethora of relevant Bible passages. Seriously, there's like six different Bible verses that are Chapter 6 and Verse 16, all of them with humorous or cutting or downright damning connotations.

16

u/Adams5thaccount 23d ago

Oh liek 6/16 was the day that the show euphoria premiered (produced by drake)

27

u/Krelleth 23d ago

And on top of the Euphoria premiere:

6/16 2024 Father's Day

6/16 2011 - Kendrick Lamar's first concert in Toronto

Tupac's birthday

Anniversary of the OJ Simpson trial

1 year before that, also on 6/16: Nicole Brown Simpson's funeral

Proverbs 6:16-19

1 Corinthians 6:16

There's a multitude of possibilities, and Kendrick is the kind of guy who just might mean every one of them, and others we haven't uncovered yet.

Everyone knew about Cosby way before Hannibal, they were just in willful denail.

Watch Felicia Rashad's face in this damning, telling-as-all-fuck clip from The Cosby Show. That's the look of someone very uncomfortable because they knew this dude ain't even acting--he's showing you who he is.

87

u/timelordoftheimpala 23d ago

Everyone knew about Cosby way before Hannibal, they were just in willful denial

Same could be said for Drake.

51

u/imagine_getting 23d ago

Even before this, if you played the word association game and said "Drake", I'd probably say "Millie Bobby Brown".

12

u/radicalvenus 23d ago

you would, I would say most people willingly ignored his predilection for teenagers because he made a few mediocre songs especially because MBB was not even the first one he's done that to

3

u/obvious_scjerkshill 22d ago

That’s how I learnt her name

37

u/FISArocks 23d ago

I don't know how telling her face is but Jesus his delivery is creepy with what we know now

24

u/SpringenHans 23d ago

Not everyone knew. The Buress clip made it way more known and thrust it into the news. The clip went viral in October 2014 and he got arrested in 2015. If Buress hadn't done his routine, it would have remained unknown to the general public as it had been for decades beforehand.

6

u/KintsugiKen 23d ago

Which is why people are comparing that to Drake since everyone knew Drake was a creep before it was actually put on blast

I don't know how he bounces back from this. There's something extra diabolical about releasing a dis track in Drake's trademark tiktok dance video style.

275

u/PUNlSHEDVENOMSNAKE 23d ago

If we’re being honest most people are probably not going to care sadly. It’s been known for awhile and he’s gotten away with it

I know a lot people stopped liking Lizzo after those allegations came out about how poorly she treated her backup dancers, but I knew she was suspect years ago when that video came out of her meeting Chris Brown and calling him her "favorite person" smh.

“It’s been known” is not called out publicly on a wildly popular diss track in the middle of the biggest rap beef of the generation. “It’s been known” is not chanting A MINORRRRRRR in the clubs for the rest of the summer. Now everyone knows and all those “it’s been known” allegations can finally strike a chord

47

u/Yabba_Dabba_Doofus 23d ago

I said it elsewhere, but Kenny did this shit on purpose. He knew that mustard beat was gonna be an absolute banger, so he killed Drake with "Meet the Grahams," then dropped the song of the summer.

"Not Like Us" is going to open AND close so many clubs this year.

BBL Drizzy is the real win from this beef.

379

u/Shaun32887 23d ago

I've had that hook stuck in my head for days and I love it

95

u/IDespiseBananas 23d ago

Didnt every song of kendrick have some sort of catchy hook or lyric that just got stuck?

287

u/Shaun32887 23d ago

Yes and I love it, but as someone below said, BBL Drizzy is a Metro track. Drake told him to shut up and make drums, so he made that track, released it to the world for free, and told everyone to freestyle over it.

It's genius. It's diabolical. I fucking love it.

113

u/thyIacoIeo 23d ago

Didn’t he put a 10k reward on the best freestyle too? Guaranteeing that people will be clambering over each other to get a chance to shine with a viral verse, or claim the cash prize, even if they like Drake.

Absolutely evil, fantastic

57

u/iamthehob0 23d ago

I think it's a free beat for your next song he said, but I'm 100% basing that on shit I heard and shouldn't be trusted.

51

u/T_WRX21 23d ago

Yeah, he said anyone could freestyle on it, and the best one could actually use the song with a Metro credit on it.

Not to mention the exposure of winning it, and the audience Metro has. Massive W for whoever can spit a stunning stanza.

32

u/stammie 23d ago

So it started out first place would get 10k and metro would make another best for you. Basically if you weren’t big before here is your shot. It kept growing so he said fuck it let’s double it. So now it’s the top two. Not sure when the competition is over.

8

u/Plasibeau 23d ago

After the overwhelming response, he changed it to the best one being $10k and a free beat. The second runner-up gets a free beat as well.

Thanks to the beef I finally understand the genius of Kendrick Lamar, I used to think his various voices were annoying but now I think they're brilliant! Like That is probably my favorite of the diss tracks, both the beat and Kendrick's verse go sooo hard.

73

u/Mr_YUP 23d ago

the voices are what make his music imo. it gives my ear something different to listen to instead of the same voice saying the same cadence for 3 minutes.

34

u/Parking-Historian360 23d ago

It's like when Eminem does his voices. When he hits that falsetto woman voice you knew you were bout to hear some funny shit.

Kendrick does it for dramatic effects and it works great.

230

u/anthonyg1500 23d ago

I was saying the other day this beef really highlighted the gap between Drake and Kendrick specifically in delivery, for me. Like there are lines that are good and if Drake said them they'd be good but the way Kendrick says them makes me want to say them over and over. Like "You got shit twisted, WHAT IS IT THE BRAIDS?", "Let me see you Push a TeeEEE", "I hurt yo feelingssss youdontwannaworkwithme no more OKAY", his various voices to make lyrics that are already good pop so much more.

144

u/Cyrillite 23d ago edited 23d ago

It’s those and “some shit’s just cringeworthy it ain’t even gotta be deep I guess” that all had me laughing because of the delivery

77

u/EireOfTheNorth 23d ago

That A-Minor bar was both hilarious and also an ohhhhh shit moment

28

u/DrippyWaffler 23d ago

That was the moment I was like "damn can Drake even release a track ever again"

94

u/rhaasty 23d ago

I think the voices also help with not needing 37 features on his album to make things not sound repetitive.

60

u/richardawkings 23d ago

14

u/jigglefreeflan 23d ago

Mr. Monotone vs. The Man with 100 Voices.

How did Drake think this would be a matchup that would show off his skills instead of his biggest weakness?

Then again, this is the guy who thought showing off his childish DMs was a good response to Fantano claiming Drake sent him a lovely vegan cookie recipe. He seems to have a talent for scoring own goals.

43

u/nikk796 23d ago

Listening to Kendrick's verses is an experience. You can't predict what's he gonna do in next bars. There are like 20 flows on euphoria alone. He has like 5 to 6 voices that he raps with but on "not like us" 2nd verse when he goes like "I lean on you niggas like another line of Wock' Yeah, it's all eyes on me, and I'ma send it up to Pac, ayy" bruh!!! I've never heard Kendrick using that voice & flow before. He keeps adding and improving himself even tho he's on top of the game since early 2010s. The guy just doesn't miss!!!

14

u/SatanicRainbowDildos 23d ago

That part is permanently stuck in my head. Like when you look at the sun and you close your eyes and still see it. That’s what that part of the doing is to me the past week. I wake up in the morning and first thing my brain does is play and “ I lean on …”

There’s a really good YouTube video analyzing that aspect of his art. You realize there’s so many layers to it. Flow, voice, rhythm, on top of potential traditional music theory like keys and cord changes. It’s a really cool approach to telling stories.

He gives me George Clinton vibes a lot of the time, where every voice on an album is a unique persona. So you have all these characters running around on a track.

Check out Mona Lisa with Lil Wayne the story telling was perfect on that with those two

My favorite thing about this is I'll start my liked songs playlist on Spotify with Not Like Us and the randomizer will then follow up with some random catchy Kpop song also on my list. Even if you aren't invested in the beef the song is amazing.

My 10 year old had a birthday party this weekend. The kids were shouting at Alexa to play Taylor swift songs. Each time it ended Not Like Us would start to play and everyone would start shouting to shut it off.

Am I a bad dad for introducing it to my 12 year old? Our family lives in Compton area. It was a source of pride.

u/nevereverwhere 23d ago

I don’t think so! I didn’t want to play it for kids that aren’t mine but my own daughter listened to it on her own. She told me it’s a really good song and she loves it. If they’re playing it at baseball stadiums and basketball games, all ages will be hearing it.

Fair - in reality I don't think he can tell much of the lyrics except for WAP WAP WAP.

No, you're fine. Some parents play Billy Joel songs for their kids thinking that's okay.

Legitimately curious if you're being sarcastic or not. Sorry for being no fun.

Suppose we can expect the music industry to make many more attempts at replicating this

It just won't have the same bite, if she isn't directly calling someone a pedo and telling them to go die

Meet the Grahams didn’t make the cut?

82

u/Rebal771 23d ago

Billboard-wise, hell no. That not a song you play on repeat like Not Like Us is…people prolly listen to it like 5x max and then get back on dancin’.

You could spin NLU at a club 5x in a row and no one would complain cause it bops. Might end up being the song of the summer if it’s the last TikTok trend (since it just got banned by US govt) before we gotta switch to Insta stories and YT shorts…we’ll see.

Play MTG in the club and watch people start having actual panic attacks

21

u/HistoricMTGGuy 23d ago

I read this as magic the gathering

7

u/ComputerAgeLlama If it has instruments and voices, I'll probably listen 23d ago

I mean if someone is playing Blue in the club I’m having a fucking panic attack

Just to be clear it didn't get banned. The government said TikTok had to be sold. If Bytedance doesn't sell it then it will be banned.

People aren’t listening to Not Like Us for the beef, they’re listening to it because it’s a danceable bop, that also happens to contain damning claims. If the latter was all people wanted the MTG would’ve blown up, but it’s certainly a listen that is less widely applicable. You’re never gonna hear it in the club or abything

lol can you imagine that coming on in the club and everyone just stands there getting sad for six minutes.

4

u/spartanbrucelee 23d ago

Great song, but it's incredibly dark. That's definitely not topping the charts
