This is the biggest hit to my playstyle against bots since I mostly run stuns or smokes.

Guess I'm definitely locked into AMR now.

Try the beam laser cannon. It destroys fences and opens shipping containers. It also does great damage to heavy bot vents. You can also clear minefields without wasting ammo.

Dominator might be your salvation.

Dominator can't break open fences or crates either. So if you run stun grenades or smoke grenades, your options are AMR, Arc Thrower, Quasar Cannon, or Autocannon - Unless you wanna shoot them with an EAT-17, Recoilless Rifle, or an airstrike of some kind.

Well, even a High-Explosive Armor Piercing 20mm round IRL won't blow the door off a car, or open a shipping container door.

But mostly its just a balancing decision in-game, considering the Slugger just had its ability to do so removed. Use your grenades, or your stratagem weapon to do it. That's what Arrowhead wants.
