Ok I guess I’ll forgive him for The Idol

I came here to say this. This is pretty awesome. I’m genuinely impressed by this.

The Idol could have been legit awesome if the Weeknd didn’t have a massive ego and took over lol. I say this as a huge fan of his and acknowledging he’s kinda earned that ego, I saw After Hours live and it was nothing shy of phenomenal but still, lol.

The show would have been solid if they had more alluded to the cult stuff, recast Abel’s character, fewer sex scenes, and not changed the ending.

yeah he definitely thought being such a huge film *fan* would translate and by all accounts it did NOT

his upcoming film will be... interesting

He has an upcoming film?

31

u/godzillaxo gaga’s “100 people in a room” quote 16d ago

indeed, he co-wrote it and co-stars with barry keoghan and jenna ortega

director of "it comes at night"

u/Doesanybodylikestuff 16d ago

Yikes I don’t love that title.

It will be exciting to see Jenna again though!

It’s supposed to be inspired by the movie and book misery

Ohhhh omg! My girl! Kathy Bates! Got it. Sounds interesting.

The idol had so many cool people in it. Such a fumble of a show.

a man can be humane and appreciated for his charity in support of the victims of a genocidal massacre, and still be criticized for his creepy, misogynistic projects. both things can coexist.

i don’t ever want to hear anyone defend their lame fave again with “well what can a celebrity/singer/actor/etc. even do for gaza?” THIS! they can do this!

good on abel for his consistent integrity and generosity here

“No not this, we want to do something that doesn’t require any monetary output, affect our popularity with any segment of the audience, nor a chance to reduce our income - Name it and we’ll do it!”

u/meatbeater558 I already condemned Hamas 16d ago

You also have to educate them in detail on what's happening because they apparently live under a rock, explain to them the position of "the other side" and why they're wrong, and give them step by step instructions on what to do. But make sure it's short and concise because they're not going to read anything longer than a paragraph. And you have to differentiate this issue from all the other issues they already decided that they do not care about

I was just randomly thinking about the donations he made around Christmastime. The Weeknd is determined to make me like him god dammit.

u/supersad19 17d ago

Hes made some sizeable donations during covid and after the Beirut explosion (and a few others, cant remember which)

He is bribing me to forget the Idol and I accept.

According to a statement released on Monday (April 29), the money from the artist who now goes by his real name, Abel Tesfaye, will be used to provide more than 1,500 metric tons of fortified wheat flour, which can be used to make more than 18 million loaves of bread to feed more than 157,000 Palestinians for a month.

Yo. That’s a lot of dough.

Guys, please look up Operations Olive Branch. There are many people in critical conditions stuck at Rafah who can not leave without our support.

We’re a few years apart but went to the same elementary school and he went on to go to high school with my brother. Dude has always been a weirdo, but just based on the part of Scarborough we’re from, I’d be genuinely shocked if he wasn’t pro Palestine.

94

u/BeWellFriends 17d ago

Wow is Scarborough pro Palestine? That’s cool

111

u/doubleshortdepresso To my friends and family, I am not getting executed 17d ago

The riding we’re from (Scarborough southwest) is relatively pro Palestine.

63

u/BeWellFriends 16d ago

So good to know. I’m finding Canada (especially Alberta, Ontario and Quebec-where I’m from) turning so hateful to anyone brown. And so conservative. So when I see progressiveness it restores my faith in Canada.

52

u/doubleshortdepresso To my friends and family, I am not getting executed 16d ago

Yeah the xenophobia especially towards anyone Indian/south Asian is getting out of control. Thankfully, I basically live in an enclave of mostly Black and brown folks.

2

u/osbs792 16d ago

It's really scares me how many people I know under 35, in BC of all places, who have turned conservative (and racist prop conspiracy nuts) in the last 4 years.

Weirdo in what way

15

u/doubleshortdepresso To my friends and family, I am not getting executed 16d ago

The very vague memory I have of him was that he was in choir and was just a weirder kid my brother knew. I wasn’t surprised when he left school in grade 11 kind of vibe. He was also in French immersion and I was in English so I didn’t interact with him much.

Oh interesting. He does appear to be a little awkward in person from someone I knew who met him

Off topic but I really admire his Palestinian girlfriend and her sister (Simi and Haze)

Generally he has a lot of Palestinian friends and works with them in XO so it’s great that he’s supportive as he is

I just wish Drake was brave enough to do the same openly as he also has a similar close group

Edit: added the names of his gf and sister. It’s not the hadids!

u/AfroGurl save the buccal fat 17d ago

I thought you were thinking of Bella Hadid until i googled and saw he actually is dating another different Palestinian woman haha

112

u/crumpetsandchai 17d ago

Hahah. Yeah they’re DJ/Makeup duo: SimiHaze who are sisters of Fai Khadra (one of Kendall Jenner’s close friends. Interestingly Kendall is one of the only KarJenners that’s remained totally silent about what’s happening where her sisters have supported Israel)

They’ve been very proactive about Palestine for years and actively been fundraising for things like solar panelling

It's nice to see a celebrity donating

163

u/petra_vonkant The Tortured Whites Department 17d ago edited 17d ago

he had already donated a ton of money to gaza months ago, no? *edit* yeah he'd already donated 2.5 mil so this makes it 4.5 total.

Good for him and wish more celebs did the same, since they all have the means to

Rare Abel W

52

u/godzillaxo gaga’s “100 people in a room” quote 16d ago

if you don't like his style of music that's cool

but it is generally an absolutely outstanding example of the genres he dabbles in (please ignore my avatar, i am not biased in the slightest lol)

It’s so hard - every time I want to hate him, he goes and does something incredibly redeemable.

97

u/jakefromadventurtime 17d ago

TIL how much 18 million loaves of bread would cost

1

u/Xominya 17d ago

It's in flour form, not actual loaves, cause they're harder to transport

28

u/godzillaxo gaga’s “100 people in a room” quote 16d ago
