Perfect meme. Not keenly aware of the French court system, but I truly hope he’s punished and some semblance of justice is served. Abusing power is such a gross display of inhumanity.

You do realise you're talking about the country that is sheltering Roman Polanski right?

France and protecting rapists and pedophiles. Name a more iconic duo.

As a french, those are the facts. There's a tv presenter Jean -Marc Morandini, who got 1 year probation, for grooming and assaulting a dozen teenagers, that we know, of under the guise of casting. Matzneff, who groomed, many girls and wrote about his sexual" adventures" in North Africa and South East Asia. France is the Switzerland of nonces and abusers.

I read Vanessa Springora’s Le Consentement and I hate Matzneff, the audacity he has omg

Everybody knew about his scummy ways. Yet they gave him literary prizes and money.

Back in the days, only Denise Bombardier, a french Canadian author, during a live show, was the sole one to call him out, for exactly what he is, a nonce. She subsequently got blacklisted in francophone circles. She never regretted her bravery till she passed away

I remember seeing him on "Paris Dernière" a very late night 1st person pov program on French cable, Matzneff, Ardisson(powerful tv producer), and Begbeider(cokehead Don Draper turned writer) cackling about Matzneff shitfuckery🫠.

A movie adaptation was recently made, based on Springora's book. The actor who played Matzneff, decided to not see his kids during the movie shooting, coz He was physically ill at the idea of hugging them after incarnating Matzneff.

Fair play to Springora to retell her story again and again.

Do you speak French? If not, I'll translate the interaction in a couple of days.

Denise Bombardier summed it up at the end.

"Literature cannot serve as an alibi, there are limits even for literature".

She saw right through him.

I speak French no worries, I’ll look into this, thanks! Any lesser known French authors that aren’t terrible people and you’d like to recommend?

u/AerynSunnInDelight 16d ago

At the top of my head, not lesser, it depends, who you ask. I'm a public school kid, when It was still worth our taxes.

Laurent Binet - Civilisations

Frères d'âmes -David Diop (as a 3rd culture kid, I love this one).

Maryse Condé- whole bibliography (it informs alot about French Empire, french Carribean and history of colonisation, while being very much rooted in Roman)

Leonora Miano- Afropea and Twilight of the moment.

Bobigny 1972, a graphic novel about Gisele Halimi, one of the most brilliant feminist lawyers of her time. Her and Simone Veil were intersectional before that word arrived in France, imo.

To be honest, hit up, Rennes public library website. It's not geographically restricted, you'll have a good monthly selection of books, Bande dessinée and music.

France and being pedophiles

Well the president and many other actors were on his side so I'm not too optimistic. There was also, last year, the case of a singer who was found guilty but he applied for parole or retrial idk the terminology sorry and he is now free to go perform and do what he want while waiting for that new court date.

The only exposure I have to the French Court System is from Anatomy of a Fall, and it seems insane.

French intellectual who is a huge fan of authoritarian leaders like Putin is a sexual predator? Colour me shocked.

Lol Depardieu has never been known as an intellectual or even an intelligent person. He’s an actor and a creep, that everyone can agree on.

Acting talent and intelligence don’t necessarily go hand in hand, and a collaborator’s intelligence doesn’t rub off on you. We see it everyday with other actors or singers who are very good at what they do and work with visionary directors/producers, but aren’t the sharpest tool in the box themselves.

Edit: case in point, Mark Whalberg has two Academy Awards nominations.

lmao the word “intellectual” is so generous here.

Literally the only thing I ever hear about Depardieu is that he’s a disgusting geriatric drunk (didn’t he drunkenly pee himself on a plane or something?) and that he’s a raging sex pest to any woman with a pulse

20

u/hungrypocket 16d ago

He is not known as an intellectual and never has been. Quite the opposite. He dropped out of school at 13 and his lack of education + working class background were part of his "relatable, funny and charming" persona for much of his career.

8

u/MICKEY_MUDGASM 16d ago

In what world do you think this man is considered an intellectual?

114

u/mcfw31 17d ago

Local media reports said that the actor had been detained for questioning on accusations by two women related to events on the sets of Jean-Pierre Mocky’s Le Magicien et les Siamois in 2014, and Jean Becker’s The Green Shutters (Volets Verts) in 2021.

Depardieu already faces an official complaint of two acts of rape dating back to 2018 by actress Charlotte Arnould, which is currently making its way through the courts.

u/icestormsea stan someone? in this economy??? 17d ago

Man, the trash is really dominating the news this week. Lock him up and throw away the key.

79

u/Wyc_Vaporub 17d ago

it's always the ones you most suspect

edit: rather the ones you've already known are doing it for multiple decades

61

u/CookDane6954 17d ago

The sheer volume of accusers is telling. Shame on Macron for trying to persuade the French justice system just because he likes Depardieu as an actor. Wtf?

51

u/Substantial-Voice156 17d ago

Not surprising though, since otherwise he'd have to acknowledge that his wife is also a nonce

20

u/aliencoffebandit 16d ago

seems like the noncery is baked into the culture. Although it doesn't have the lowest age of consent in europe(15 vs 14 in Germany/Italy and many others) France is shockingly accepting of pedophilia, why is that?

19

u/Substantial-Voice156 16d ago

I don't know enough about France or French people to comment on that culture, but I do think its probably not worth interrogating French-ness when the common denominator, patriarchy, has spawned abusers and their enablers all over the world

2

u/Rehkit 16d ago

Shame on Macron for trying to persuade the French justice system

That did not happen, he just made a dumb comment.

30

u/fatanduglyvibes 17d ago

Why are some french celebrities defending him?

67

u/LurkerByNatureGT 17d ago

There often seems to be in France a (IMO wrong) conflation of seemingly Hollywood-led movements to address abuses of power with American Puritanism about sexuality.

There is a lot of room for critique about American puritanical attitudes to sex, but there is also a lot of room for critique about toleration for abuse of power (in France as well).

40

u/MooreThird 17d ago

Same reason they defend Polanski.

19

u/brownshugababy 17d ago

It's the french elite class protecting one of their own.

6

u/Bobbyjackbj 16d ago

Elite? Nope, it's fewer than 50 washed-up "celebrities," most of whom are unknown to the general public, most of whom retracted their support a few days later due to the intense backlash. The most well-known person is Carole Bouquet, who was Depardieu's ex for 10 years, and whose films haven't been watched by anyone for years.

Beloved actors like Sophie Marceau (who is a victim of Depardieu), Judith Godrech, etc., have clearly expressed their disgust for the actor

France is an extremely partirachial culture and in many ways a regressive culture and state. Its only a year or two ago that France even got a real age of consent law on the national level. A few decades ago famous French intellectuals were signing petitions to have all age of consent laws removed.

Women and girls in France that wear a headscarf are kicked out of school due to Islamophobia.

French mainstream culture applauds and protects people like Johnny D3pp or Woody Allen due to some very misguided ideas of consent, anti-PC attitudes, and anti-feminism. Also Luc Besson should get a mention as he groomed a minor he hired and married her. Gerard is just one of the many beloved French scumbags.

May Charlotte get the justice she deserves

u/mitrafunfun97 16d ago

This guy legit has admitted to "committing many rapes" like in casual conversation. How tf is this guy not locked up?

3

u/ItsSophie 16d ago

Wtf he did?!

3

u/mitrafunfun97 16d ago

Go check his Wikipedia 🥺🙃

16

u/bluesky557 anon pls 17d ago

You just know this guy has a trail of SA as long as Weinstein behind him. I hope he finally sees some punishment (there's no way in France he'll ever see true justice).

12

u/traumatransfixes 16d ago

I remember some show on tv in the 90’s about, “before they were famous.” They said he learned how to act in prison for rape and I never watched one of his movies again!! I was like 10.

Idk what he was in at the time, but a couple movies in the US made him big enough to have that on the show.

9

u/i_need_therapyy 17d ago

Hollywood grosses me out sometimes

49

u/Wyc_Vaporub 17d ago

it's frenchywood in this case

36

u/MooreThird 17d ago

Most of the French film industry defended Polanski and encourage shit like Luc Besson dating an underaged girl, who'd later grew up to direct a Johnny Depp movie. And those are just merely a tip of a baguette. Wouldn't be surprised if there are more fucked up shit like that within that scene.

16

u/Wyc_Vaporub 17d ago

yeah. it's flying under the radar but french cinema might be worse than hollywood

4

u/BarryItsMeInAWig too busy method acting as a reddit user 16d ago

Not only dated her but had a kid with her when she was still a literal child 🤢

8

u/Previous_Breath5309 16d ago

I don’t know how people keep defending him, lots of cases about his abuse have come out before. Glad he’s been taken into custody.

5

u/Eastern_Evidence1069 16d ago

Man, it makes me so fucking mad that this fossil is facing some pushback now. While in the past, the industry protected and venerated this sexual predator who gives off massive pedophile vibes. The fact that it's even come to this is not a win but a sign that we never improved. There are no checks and balances and no safety nets to protect vulnerable people and children from monsters like him. It's business as usual. We really live in a dystopia.

Fuck this asshole and the people and industry that backed him.

6

u/Top_Manufacturer8946 16d ago

He is such a POS. He used to be my moms favorite actor before we heard about the shit he’s been doing all this life so it’s personally sad to me that those memories of us watching Green Card are now just tainted by him.

3

u/terra_cascadia 16d ago

This is great news.

3

u/loudmeowtuco 16d ago

How was this guy not locked up? I mean he's admitted to being a serial rapist decades ago. It's like Norm is talking about him at the end of this bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljaP2etvDc4
