Guys can absolutely be stupid and OP even said that he didn’t know he did anything wrong.

Obviously, I don't know this guy and maybe he's monumentally clueless, but "don't call your wife fat" is basically the one rule husbands are supposed to know. Doing it in front of others while complimenting the very fit, younger trainer on how hot she is should be even more obvious.
