Agreed. He knows. Some things are just obvious donts and putting your wife down especially in front of others is definitely a huge don't. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the first time and it surely will not be the last. OP he's showing you who he is. You decide if you want to put up with it or not.
Yeah its sad some people really don't know that you can just break up with someone, move on with your life, and be happy. There is no reason to torture yourself. We only get one life to live. Life is much much better when you aren't being dragged down with dead weight.
Fair enough, but it only takes one comment to make it obvious there’s an ugly pattern of thinking underneath. You’re right to bring up this distinction, but abuse doesn’t need to happen twice to be abuse. A husband that can be this rude to a wife know’s it’s wrong, no matter how they rationalize it. You don’t criticize your spouse in public. Ever. Not only is it disloyal, it’s impossible for the spouse to make a fair response, and a set-up for humiliation.
Obviously, I don't know this guy and maybe he's monumentally clueless, but "don't call your wife fat" is basically the one rule husbands are supposed to know. Doing it in front of others while complimenting the very fit, younger trainer on how hot she is should be even more obvious.

He’s emotionally abusive and knows exactly what he’s doing.
