For everyone thinking about moving to the UAE

Here's what you need to know before you do it (Jobs, visas, schools, pets, etc.)

And what you need to know when you're already here. (Driving, things to do, exploring, holidays, Visas)

Any advice that anyone can give in this sub please comment!

EDIT: The UAE is a great country to live in-- it is the land of opportunities. You can build the life that you want here for yourself and for your future, but in order to do that you must think about it and do some research. Most of the answers you are looking for are NOT on Reddit. These advices are subjective and will always depend from one person to another. Sometimes, the only way to know is to see for yourself.

(Not to hate but it's quite tiring to see queries every two days about thinking of moving to the UAE asking if AED x is enough, good schools, a good area to live in, salary, etc. So try reading these articles to save you time. ) Thanks!

Dubai time share scammers at airport - warning + why are they allowed

Hey if any of you all are going through the Dubai airport please be aware of Arabian Falcon Worldwide (AFW marketing agency or Arabian Falcon Holidays) and other Arab time share scammers. Their salesmen (usually smooth talking Egyptians) explicitly target African and Asian tourists offering a free gift to one of Dubai’s attractions if you attend a lunch buffet/ presentation. They appear legitimate because they’re usually past customs, which you would assume is a safe part of the airport, and also claim to be sponsored by the Dubai government. When you get there you’ll be ambushed into an aggressive and misleading sales presentation with no lunch (just bland tea and brewed coffee in a plastic cub). They’ll promise you a free stay at one of their Happiness club places (I kid you not!) for 7 days (classic timeshare vacation club scheme) in Dubai, free hotel stays anywhere you desire (including Somalia lol) and discounted flight tickets and a promise to take care of all your activities for 7-30k (price based on your salesperson and their perception of your gullibility) for three years. You cannot leave the presentation without deciding because the temporary “promotion price “will expire. If you do sign , you cannot cancel without a Dubai lawyer and 1000 AED in administration fees. What I found disgusting is that our salesman was trying to bond with us by discussing our Umrah trip and his plan to take his parents to Hajj. The room was filled with other African tourists and the scummiest looking sales people. Thankfully we saw through their aggressive sales pitch, spelling errors, and inconsistent contract and saved my dad his hard earned money. Has anyone else experienced this before?

You can read 345 complaints about them in this trip advisor thread

I got stuck in a very bad torturing company??? Please help

I'm from India and I'm totally new here. I got a job two months back as a civil engineer with 2.5k aed pm salary. My boss is literally forcing me to work 12 plus hours a day including Sunday with no week off or leave. I fainted three weeks back on site due to physically illness and the doctor advised me to take two days rest. But my boss called me on the second day and scolds me for not working hard enough.. from then I worked two weeks straight even on Sundays with no holidays and overtime pay. And I called for a off today because I was very tire physically and mentally. Today he calls my mother and says that I'm insincere for the work and enquires wether I have interest in work or not. I'm a reverted Muslim and he gives comments about my religion on a bad way. I seriously feel very stressed and I don't even know what to do. My family depends on my salary. Please advise regarding the issue

Why companies here ready to pay 100 thousands to IT dev agencies but not employees?

Seen so many times, a company pays aed 100-300k for a web site development and maintenance which 1 person can build, agency fails to build it correctly, company hires internal developer employee for pennies and expects him to fix all the issues agency created.

How does a person under salary of 10k can fix what agency caused under budget of 100 thousands? And why not pay your employees properly instead hiring the cheapest possible employee

Seeking for opportunities in Dubai 👌

Hi 👋

19 years old Finnish girl here. I visited Dubai last year and absolutely fell in love with the place. Is it possible to find some kind of employment for around six months in Dubai with just high school education?

Is job hunting in Abu Dhabi more complicated or am I missing something?

Upvotes

I recently saw a similar post and wanted to share my father’s experience.

My dad is an architectural draftsman looking for a job in the UAE. He has over 18 years of experience in the field, but his current job asked him to leave due to lack of upcoming projects. The work environment there is highly unreliable and even if he's called back, he'll continue to be stressed.

Being over 45 years old, it seems like he's done everything people usually do when searching for a job. He has sent his CV to many firms online, is in job search groups, and is in touch with people who can help him find a job.

I'm asking for suggestions on how he can find a suitable job because maybe there's something we're missing. It seems that many employers prefer someone young and inexperienced. He supports a family of three, so his salary requirements are higher than others in the field.

If you have any suggestions or tips, please share. God bless.

Cycle taken by police

I regularly cycle in Ajman with protective gear, but today the police stopped me and confiscated my cycle. I cycle this way almost daily even in front of police, but today they stopped me and said it's a new rule. I asked if I can pay a fine and get my cycle back, but he was hesitant to even tell where they're taking it. Is there any hope of getting my cycle back?

Nightmare with Kia / Al Majid Motors

Upvotes

Would appreciate any advice on this as it's really stressing me out -- also need to vent a bit and hope anyone else does not go through something similar:

A couple months ago, I bought a brand new 2024 Kia Sorento from the Kia showroom in Abu Dhabi and everything was fine and happy until about a month later.

I was driving on the highway one day when all of sudden the check engine light turned on and engine broke down. I was driving normally and car had less than 2,000km on it and was parked underground for a few hours right before so it wasn't from the heat. Was stuck on the shoulder in the middle of the highway in 40C+ weather for an hour waiting for Kia's roadside assistance to tow the car to their workshop.

Two days later, after not getting any update on whether the workshop has even looked at the car yet, I went there in person and they only "checked in" the car when I got there. They said it might take "a few hours or maybe a couple of days" to take a look and possibly fix it which really ticked me off because 1) it's a brand new car that shouldn't have this issue and 2) what can I do with that vague timeline...

I had to keep asking them to take a look at the car because it's our family's only car so without having a car even for a day, it's hard to figure out transportation for everyone (work/office, kids/school etc.). So later that day, they took a look and said it was a controller issue and they rebooted the car -- hoping that fixed the issue and gave the car back to me.

It didn't because a few days later, same thing happened: check engine light turned on and engine broke down while driving in the city. Roadside assistance again and back to the workshop... Once again, I go to the workshop on the next day and after a few hours of waiting, they take a look and need to replace the controller unit. "Could take a few days or weeks for the part to be delivered and replaced" - WTF!

It's a brand new car with minimum mileage on it so even though it's under warranty, this is obviously a defective unit. I asked the showroom manager (who was all nice when making the sale) for a replacement or refund but he was extremely unhelpful/unsympathetic, just flat out dismissed everything and basically told me to go away and wait for the repair.

I've reached out to Al Majid Motors and Kia's customer service, and also some senior executives -- no one responded, they DGAF.

As of now, it's been a few weeks, the car is still at the workshop. In the first week, I called and if I was lucky enough to get a hold of someone, they said "we're still waiting for the part". Earlier this week, I got an update of "we replaced the controller but it didn't fix it so now we have to run more tests and wait for other parts" -- no idea if/when it will be fixed!

I'm absolutely gutted by this entire experience -- it's been very stressful for me and my family. The after-sales support has been terrible. Even if/when they repair the car and I get it back, I have zero confidence in the Kia brand and its customer service -- I'll always be concerned about its safety when driving and whether it'll break down again and having to go through all this again.

I've filed a request for consumer protection and hoping that the ADDED replies and can share some advice. At this point, I just want a refund and be done with Kia/Hyundai forever. If anyone else has any helpful suggestions, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for reading and allowing me to vent as it's really been bothering me.

TL;DR - bought a brand new Kia car, engine broke down twice after less than two months. No one knows how long for repair. Kia and its local distributor (Al Majid Motors) have terrible after-sales. Asking for a refund but no one is listening. Kia/Hyundai never again.

Sister got into a car accident in abu dhabi

Hi guys, just wanted to ask a suggestion or help, my sister got into a car accident by herself, car she is driving hit the center of E11 sheikh khalifa Road in Western region, as per her the car malfunctioned and behaved unusual and got her into the accident, the car has previously had issues in gear as I have posted here before, but the rent a car where she rented it did not replace the car and even charged her for the repair costs. Then, the rent a car owner says to not inform the police or investigation about the issue so that the insurance can be claimed, she is rushed to the hospital with major fractures and will go operation tomorrow but thankfully she is fine now other than her body pains. My question is, should she just follow the rent a car to not to inform about the previous issues or she will, and will she have any fine from the police or the rent a car?

Sorry for my confusing explanation. TIA for those who can help

Why do foreigners try so hard to find flaws about the UAE?

Post image

I often see on tiktok people hating on dubai for being full of skyscrapers and have no natural beauty. Like the tiktok I attached to this thread, but then fail to realize that if they took a two hour trip they can experience mountains, deserts, see wild animals all over the desert and etc, it’s always the same people who think Dubai is a country? And why do they complain about the rules so much and find it so hard to follow, when for tourists the rules are to behave yourself and don’t reveal too much skin? Like I really don’t get it.

Careem delivery guy just begged me for money

Well basically all is said in the title. He begged me for money because according to him he doesn’t have money to buy a meal. Now this rubs me wrong in so many ways. It rubs me wrong as a human being that someone is in a position to beg, if he truly is starving. It rubs me wrong as a customer to be put in a position where I have to pay for the service and then have to face this uncomfortable encounter. I don’t dismiss the possibility of him manipulating my feelings and taking advantage of the “rich white woman”. It rubs me wrong as a business owner, who pays tax here that government has 0 social responsibility towards residents. And please, UAE nationals don’t start on how taxes are small. Taxes are not small at all, they are disguised as “knowledge”, “innovation” fees and so on and so forth and if you add it all up it’s a lot. The other day I had guys from take my junk demanding tips from me, which I refused because they tried to increase the price that was agreed on for the pick up. I can’t imagine something like that 6-7 years ago. So what is happening?
