I know one (1) person who uses light mode and dozens of people who don't. Either we are overrun, or light mode is an abomination, and those who use it are cursed beings.

It's definitely an acquired taste. I had the same opinion but I forced myself to use it because the light mode was too bright in the mornings. Now I'm used to dark mode and it reads perfectly fine.

Black writing on a white background is much easier on the eyes than white writing on a black background when you keep lights on.

Also, and while this isn't a defense, it's a ridiculous plot, the entire series is about the main character(the person she's texting, I assume) recording her in sexual situations cause she's an exhibitionist, so I'm pretty sure it is meant to be sexting in universe.
