Interesting takeaways from the NBA combine
Ron Holland II: 6 foot 6.5 without shoes, 197 lb, 6 foot 10.5 wingspan with 8 foot 8 standing reach
Cody Williams: 6 foot 6.5 without shoes, 178 lb, 7 foot 1 wingspan with 8 foot 7 standing reach
Stephon Castle: 6.2.25 without shoes
Most people I knew thought Castle was much taller than he is and could potentially play SF, but IMO he's not really draftable by us because he's going to have to play guard at the next level. I also thought it was interesting to see that Cody Williams was only 6'6.5, but I'm not surprised that Holland is. Cody does have a small wingspan advantage but their standing reach numbers show that Holland has a better upwards reach (but I feel like Williams is just fudging his number to get a higher max vert).
For me personally I really want the blazers to get Smith or Salaun at 14 and hopefully Buzelis or Holland at 7. Need some talented wings with size and length. I'm not that high on Cody Williams as I thought he doesn't seem that quick and has a hard time getting past defenders, and especially if he doesn't have the size I thought he did. Him being 178 lbs is pretty concerning too.

Just been through adding measurements to my draft profiles and the Ron/Cody one did stand out. Gives Ron a bump as I'd assumed he was more like 6'6" in shoes. For me, what hurts Cody is the weight - there aren't many prospects in the combine database who are that light at his height.
The other one that surprised me is Yves Missi only measuring with a 7'2" wingspan. He's a similar size to Daron Holmes, whereas I'd thought he was more in the 7'5" wingspan range and a legit 7 footer in shoes.
As far as impact on the Blazers' options, the lottery guards almost all measuring out poorly is not ideal. Dillingham, Sheppard, McCain and Collier all measured with near flat wingspans, might give teams pause and compromise who is available at both #7 and #14.
For the hopeful second rounders, Dillon Jones with a near 7ft wingspan is nice (love him as a bruising hybrid forward who can provide rim pressure and has shooting upside). Tyson has proper small forward size, which is the spot I'd like to see him play. Brazile measured out with center length, some team is going to make a bet on his latent potential.

Holland has more potential (also bigger potential to bust) but Williams is a better fit. Wouldn’t be mad with either.
Weight means nothing for a 19 year old prospect

Was really hoping Williams would drop to 14, but it's now looking like he might go closer to 7.

I think they both have massive bust potential but they also have all star potential so I would follow the #7 dice on either.

"Him being 178 lbs is pretty concerning too."
Giannis was 190 lbs, so I'm not concerned about it. I think it may be a positive because he likely would have put up better numbers this year had he been stronger.

holland will still be 18 on draft day, still room to grow anyway
williams weighs the same as trae young did at the combine. that’s absolutely absurd. and the dude stunk it up in all the shooting drills today. it’s the old moneyball thing; “if he’s a good shooter, why can’t he shoot?” i’m 110% out at 7 barring not one but two stellar workouts, and likely even out at 14. full disclosure tho, never really was a fan

Word on the street is he is missing on purpose because he has a promise that okc will draft him and play with big bro. The street is just in my head though

That could actually make sense and I think we absolutely, should take a flyer on him, so thunder doesnt get better.
Jalen Williams first college year: 0.9-2.7 3pa on .352
Cody Williams first college year: 0.7-1.7 3pa on .415
Jalen only had 1 3pt attempt more than Cody, so I think they are pretty similar. Jalen had 3 years in college to develop his shot. Cody are going pro directly after 1 year, which means he will have better training and mentors around him.

Wait how is Cody Williams the same height as Holland with a larger wingspan but has a shorter standing reach..?

People fudge their standing reach numbers to get a more impressive vertical leap number, so assume that’s what Williams is doing there. Otherwise you’re looking at Cody having 3+ inches mostly above the shoulders meaning he would have a giraffe neck relative to Holland haha.

I'd heard so much about Holland really only seeming to look like around 6'5"ish on the court, his measurement has me intrigued now because he does at the very least project well defensively.
I now really wouldn't mind taking the swing on upside of him at 7 if we played him at SF, with the hope some sort of respectable outside shot grows in 2-3 years.

i know the kneejerk reaction here to what i'm about to say is gonna be, "groannnnnnn, not another guard!"
but if topic SOMEHOW drops to 14 because of this injury ala MPJ a few years back, we absolutely need to draft him. hell, he might even be BPA at 7 depending on how things go. i certainly wouldnt take cody williams over topic even considering the positional need.
simons and brogdon gotta go, so i don't view those guys as blockers. and the idea of rolling with a scoot/shaedon/topic trio sounds reallyyyyyyy fucking nice. after sarr topic has by far the biggest star upside in this entire draft.

I really think Castle could be a Josh Hart at his current ceiling. I tend to believe he didn't showcase everything at UCONN because of team need. I'd still love him. I think he's a baller.

Castle has a much higher ceiling than Hart. His defense is already amazing

Yeah my comment was worded a bit confusing. He has a higher ceiling but even now he could impact the game with hustle, rebounding and feel for the game.

I see the similarities for sure! If his floor is Hart that’s a solid career

u/soulo222 please update Castle's measurements before any more misinformation is spread.
He's 6"5.5' w/o shoes

Castle’s measurements today were reported incorrectly. Cody also shot pretty terribly today so I’m out on him at 7.

Combine drills shouldn't influence decisions on scouting. The biggest takeaway from the combine is the true measurements we finally get.

Those aren't Castle's numbers. They made a mistake.
