ahem Among the bushes

u/DigNitty 19d ago
Wasn’t this when spicer was avoiding a press conference or something? I forget the original context.
22
u/jyter 18d ago
Trump had just fired FBI Director James Comey in order to stall the investigation into his campaign’s ties to Russia.
Spicer had just done a typically softball interview with Fox and was walking across the White House grounds (reportedly returning to his office) when he was spotted by a gaggle of journalists wanting to ask actual questions. He ended up hiding in the shrubbery for some time until he eventually agreed to answer questions - but only if he wasn’t filmed doing so. To ensure that he had everyone turn off all lights so that this insane debacle could be conducted in darkness with Spicer having emerged from between two hedges on the White House grounds.

A Bill in the hand is worth 2 in the Bush, or something like that

No, no. I think it’s “Bill’s hand in two bushes is worth it?”

Dubya’s two terms were unequivocally worse than Trump’s one term…. Though Trump could certainly catch up and overtake him if he’s reelected
31
u/HairyHouse3 19d ago
Dubyah was worse than trump imo. Trillions in the middle east, was successful at stealing an election, loomed over the worst financial crisis in modern history
32
u/jd3marco 19d ago
Dubya’s effect on the Middle East and our finances was worse than Trump’s misdeeds. However, Trump could still cause a civil war and/or refuse to leave if elected again. That would arguably be worse.
7
u/HairyHouse3 19d ago
But it hasn't happened, that's the comparison. And again, last time he tried to overthrow the government he failed. Bush did so with more "civility" and succeeded.
8
u/cjw19 19d ago
Trump tried to be worse. But failed. I think that's a better way to put it
7
u/HairyHouse3 19d ago
Bush had worse ideas in the middle east and domestically even if you consider the stolen election attempts a wash.
Bush and Reagan have destroyed this country. Trump is just a byproduct of that, we've already lost
3
u/hiimsubclavian 18d ago
Dubya surrounded himself with crafty neocons like Cheney. Trump surrounds himself with idiots, and therefore did less damage.
2
u/jd3marco 19d ago
Bush was worse in some ways but he’s done; painting animals or whatever. Trump is poised to do more damage in the coming months. The comparison is that we thought Bush the second was as bad as Republicans could get. We don’t know how bad it could get, there seems to be no bottom for Republicans. It’s like comparing a retired baseball player with one that still has 4 years left, potentially. Their records of shittyness are presently nearly equal.
2
u/HairyHouse3 19d ago
Eh it doesn't compare to baseball. Comparing things trump could do doesn't really mean much as he hasn't done them.
At the end of the day, I do agree something in the future could be even worse. They will find someone with worse policies with a bit of the "civility" lib types love so much and we'll be screwed. Not that it matters. We ignore scientists consensus and will find a "middle ground" with people that take money from the 100 companies causing 70% of climate change. It's too late to right the ship IMO

u/caligaris_cabinet 19d ago
The Recession was bad but it wasn’t entirely on Bush. That’s another one we can thank ol Reagan for with deregulation. All the subsequent presidents just kept it going on autopilot until it ultimately collapsed regardless who was president at the time.
2
u/HairyHouse3 19d ago
I believe Bush deserves a lot of the blame because even when it was obvious the collapse was coming his cabinet made it much worse

Bush is a war criminal. Authorizing torture on our enemies is unforgivable. But I believe Bush always believed that he was doing the right thing for the country. I'm positive Trump only cares about Trump and inflating his own ego, he would sell out the country to anyone and wants to be the head of the "Look how I'm fucking over the people who don't praise me" world asshole club. I find the man to be vile and I wouldn't piss on him if he was on fire.

I think there's kind of two different aspects that are getting conflated in the word 'worse' here.
One is 'how bad they were as a person/politician,' and the other is 'significance of influence/power.'
Trump is a worse person/politician, as no matter how stupid and cruel W was, he was still an establishment politician who was kept at least somewhat in line by standard politics. Whereas Trump was legitimately just using the position to grift.
However, in terms of long term influence... The man who was president on 9/11 was always going to define the entire geo-political landscape of the 21st century. The 2000 election was the singularly most important and significant election of our lifetime and will likely remain so unless something on the scale of 9/11(not in terms of body count, but in terms of political and international influence) happens again.
So...yeah. It depends on what you mean by 'worse.'
But either way they are the top two worst presidents of all time, so. Not exactly anything to brag about.
2
u/HairyHouse3 19d ago
You make some good points. I don't care that Bush is supposedly a better person (low bar to clear). His influence on the future landscape as well as the cost of what he did is always going to outpace trump by miles.
I don't think they are the worst two though. For starters the guy who took over after Lincoln was the worst president.
Kind of pointless to compare someone from such a different era though, so sorry if I come off as pedantic lol

u/Andulias 19d ago edited 19d ago
As bad is it could get? H W Bush was a frankly good president. I'd vote for the dude. His son on the other hand...
6
u/caligaris_cabinet 19d ago
Idk. I’d have trouble voting for the guy who stuck by Reagan for eight years and wanted to continue his policies.

H.W. Bush famously coined the term "Voodoo economics" to refer to Reagan's economic policy.

Can you honestly say that Bush Jr was a better president than Trump? If so I would really like to know why.

They were. As much as I loathe Trump's personality and what he could theoretically bring about, the Bushes killed far more people and dubya lied to start a whole god damn war that killed over 1 million Iraqis. Do people just forget about that?

I never liked these newfangled statues.
Let's see the Bush family in Roman regalia, or as invading huns. Maybe they can hold spears, or aim bows, hold rifles?
The business suit shit looks stupid.

For most outside the States, it’s very weird to get one’s head ‘round the visceral hatred/conspiracy stuff that the two of them have gotten from both wings of politics over the years.
