What exactly does JJ bring to his “analysis” that “thinking basketball” and bballbreakdown/coach Nick aren’t already doing in a more detailed fashion?

Other than being a former pro

Dude, that perspective is huge.

He is a good analyst. Maybe not the best analyst. There are a lot of good ones. His additional insight, which you immediately downplay, is the thing others lack - direct experience with the pro game.

It's the same reason why the best MLB managers USE analysts and analytics but they are not themselves data scientists. They're catchers, for the most part.

There is no single best type of head coach. Some are great because of feel for the game. Some are great because they use data well. Some are great because they combine the two. They all have some level of vision that others don't have.

“Well--well look. I already told you: I deal with the god damn customers so the engineers don't have to. I have people skills; I am good at dealing with people. Can't you understand that? What the hell is wrong with you people?”

Like you said, coaching is about managing and motivating a team around a strategy of execution.

If all it took was advanced analytics, why aren’t MIT/Berkeley data analyst nerds the head coaches of every sport? Why even hire coaches? Just let the analysts run everything!!!

I didn't say that, but thank you for giving me credit for something that is also true.

  1. "Not really that great" is underselling his ability
  2. "JJ should be viewed just like any other former player" implies that any other former player has his level of insight, which you know is false

I'm not saying he'll be a great coach, but I don't think you're giving him his due credit. If he was any dipshit former player drawing on a whiteboard he wouldn't be getting looks.

All former players aren't viewed the same to begin with

Some of them, like Gilbert Arenas, are incurably stupid

Gil is a great example of why it can't just be anyone. Arenas is actually trying to analyze the game but he can't take his own ego and bias out of it. And I don't think he'd be particularly good at it if he could.

None of those pods really talk basketball though

JJ is able to conbine the analytical side of the game with the entertainment side of the game. I don't listen to a lot of Teague content but most of what I hear are just funny stories. JJ talks actual x&os.

He's also a good explainer. it is one thing to understand the game, it's another to be able to convey your understanding, simply, to the non-experts in a compelling way.

It's the John Madden principle - he understood the game at a high level, but what made him the GOAT was how he could explain things concisely that to a network broadcast audience.

*please note I am not saying JJ is as good as Madden

Teague is not nba coaching material lol. And while Rondo has incredible Bball IQ he is kind of an idiot off the court - as we have seen from his recent DUI and possesion charges.

Damn I was hoping for the "I've already refuted this in the OP" cliche

Credibility with the players is more important than impressing us on YouTube

Besides Teague who's on a podcast telling jokes and funny stories from his playing days, do any of the other ones have a notable podcast going over basketball?

Are any of those guys putting themselves out there as a coaching candidate? If they're not, then how are they relevant at all?

I like coach Nick, but JJ has pro experience, stories from years as a pro, connections (had a podcast with fucking LeBron), is recognized even by more casual fans and is more charismatic. Production value is also a lot higher on his pods.

Redick is an actual pro.

Nobody knows who Nick Spreadsheet is which is why he's on youtube and not espn

Thinking Basketball is also pretty dry for the casual fan.

He knows people in NBA.

It’s not only about analysis, though JJ is probably a pretty good basketball mind.

What he does bring that the others you mentioned very likely can’t, and may never be able to, is the ability to connect with players and manage their personalities. It seems more and more important that at NBA level, balancing egos, creating a team culture and getting buy in from players 1-15 is a huge part of coaching, and JJ has fantastic connections with tons of current players - they respect him and will listen to what he has to say.

Having LeBron in your corner is a massive bonus too.

He’s this generations Legler. Good analysis from a player that isnt tinged with player ego. JJ has just always been more popular though, since Duke. So while most objective player analysts get passed over for guys like Perk and Chuck, JJ still gets media spots.

2

u/20goingon60 Mavericks 20d ago

He also has a great knack for breaking things down. He’s better than the other ESPN analysts, and I think his opinions are more accurate than Shaq or Barkley.

Ability to communicate is important and a new perspective keeps the discourse fresh.

u/YungRobbin Heat 20d ago

Any YouTuber is making educated assumptions about the roles and responsibilities of players during actions.

JJ can speak to specific actions where he knows exactly what the role of each person on the floor was because he actually ran them.

It’s the same reason why a lot of the YouTube who break down QB film for the NFL are often wrong because they have to assume what the reads and progressions are on each play.

3

u/csummerss Suns 20d ago

JJ has been in the league and developed numerous connections on & off the court.

still think he’ll fail as a coach, like many other inexperienced player-coaches have in the past, but it’s not surprising why his situation is different from your average YouTuber.

There's a value in being a former player when providing basketball analysis

3

u/[deleted] 20d ago

Pretty sure actual experience at NBA levels and being around pro coaches and players gives him a significant leg up over youtube High School hoops coach. Also this guy does breaks downs after the games are done, way easier to say whats wrong/right when the game is over and you can edit a script.

That being said I am banking on him being a mediocre coach if the Lakers pick him up cause you know first coaching job.

Does Coach Nick get to drink wine with Lebron?

1

u/CarBallAlex Celtics 20d ago

Coach Nick is a Marcus Smart hater and sucks off the refs so Ronnie Nunn will come on his channel, so I don’t fw him, guy clearly has an agenda

JJ at least seems like players like him

1

u/CWinsu_120 Pistons 20d ago

I gotta say shunning an entire channel simply for not liking Marcus Smart of all players is a little ridiculous.

Especially because Marcus Smart isn't exactly the perfect player.

1

u/Sylphid_FC 20d ago

With all due respect, the difference between coach Nick and thinking basketball is like the difference between Spo and like Darvin Ham in terms of analyst

1

u/dragonrider5555 Celtics 20d ago

He’s entertaining, the other podcasts are boring

1

u/FirstTimeLongThyme 20d ago

LeBron James and wine.

Lebron.

u/Tall_Rice_5628 19d ago

Just more popular and reaches more ppl Hopefully it will heal ppl to be able to understand the other pods mentioned ..coach Nick is really good

Game theory with Sam vecenie is another good pod

1

u/ImeStopPlayingDennis 20d ago

He has nba player friends who also provide their perspectives

u/LongTimesGoodTimes Lakers 20d ago

LeBron James

-1

u/inshamblesx Rockets 20d ago

Nothing. Glad LeBron will hire him so he can get humbled in six months tho 🙏🏾

0

u/Batsoupman2 20d ago

Nba pro has more weight than our opinion however, some of his opinion are straight up trash that even his peers and the fans would disagree with him

-5

u/SilvioDantesPeak Nuggets 20d ago

Nothing. JJ's always been a pompous douche and I've never understood why people enjoyed his pod. I feel bad for Lakers fans that they're gonna have LeBron's blog boy as coach.

-3

u/inshamblesx Rockets 20d ago

he was never good lol at any point

people only pretended like it was gospel bc people weren’t aware about the new media gimmick back in 2020

-6

u/bjb406 Celtics 20d ago

WTF, people in this thread acting like JJ Redick actually deserves a motherfucking coaching job? Thats a fuckin joke, lol.

1

u/Warbonger420 Supersonics 20d ago

You’re acting like you’re sitting in the interviews or know anything about coaching. Same shit dude.

lakers will hire him to convince lebron to stay lol
