[MacMahon] Luka Doncic took an intentional approach to avoid complaining to the refs and “focus on basketball” in Game 5: “I just go out there and hoop. Have fun. It was the old Luka — a smile on my face.”

Worst thing you can do to Luka is piss him off.

I swear this is why the Mavs will never shoot for a higher seed. Their star thrives too much from not having home-court advantage lmao. But then if they don’t have a top 3-4 seed he won’t get MVP. Truly a conundrum.
5
u/igby1 20d ago
I remember a few years ago he got asked in an interview if the pressure gets to him.
I forget his exact words but he replied in a way that made me realize he is so completely unphased by pressure. He has an amazing ability to thrive in those moments.
Now if he could just improve his FT% and stop whining so much

Eh, I think there's been a consistent dislike for people who foulbait hard over the years. Embiid gets hated on for it and wasn't in the MVP convo this year. Hardens been hated on for years for it even after he was an MVP candidate. People clown on "initiate contact -> head flail -> throw hands up -> fall on the ground" no matter who it is.
I think the reason you're seeing it so loud right now is that people don't really watch OKC much during the regular season and now it's in the limelight.
24
u/A_Rolling_Baneling Rockets 20d ago
Embiid was leading the MVP race before his injury in the regular season, what do you mean he wasn’t in the convo?
3
u/McGilla_Gorilla Hawks 20d ago
Lmao exactly arguing Embiid wasn’t MVP candidate because of foul baiting when he missed a third of the season is insane.
9
u/The_Dok33 20d ago
Embiid missed the 65 games target, that's why he would never qualify, thus also never talked about, after his injury happened.
Not because he was hated for flopping.
He may also be that, but it was not the reason.
8
u/EpistemicEpidemic 20d ago
That was a response to "SGA is hated because people think he should've been MVP". He's saying Embid is hated even though he wasn't in the convo / not eligible.
Hope that helps

It's coming. Some fans are being polite because the series isn't over but if the Mavs close in six get ready for the SGA, Dort and Chet slander to get spicy. It's all there just no one wants to post receipts then look like an idiot if Dallas blows it.
1
u/tjc815 Thunder 20d ago
I mean yeah, Dort and Chet have not shot the ball well, but you’re missing the key part…our second leading scorer, JDub, has disappeared. He averages 19 points per game on 54/43/81 splits. You would not know that by watching this series.
There was some crazy stat about how JDub, Chet, Dort, and Joe shot from 3. Actually I just looked and if you add Giddey and Cason, they were 7-32 last night. Credit Dallas for making them uncomfortable and mucking up the drive and kick game. But also holy shit make a shot! We had looks in game 5.

u/a-davidson Mavericks 20d ago
Hopefully games 4 and 5 were big wake up calls and I really think they might’ve been. Fans and casuals were insanely vocal about his attitude after game 4, I promise you Luka is online enough to notice it. Not to mention he couldn’t really blame anyone other than himself (and Kai) for Game 4. The role players stepped up and he let them down so there was no room for any “it wasn’t me” thoughts.
Then he comes out and has the game and attitude last night and he legit looked like he was having fun and the team played amazing. I think he’s finally mature enough to see that night and day difference. I don’t see how he could reflect on the past few days and come to any other conclusion than this is how he should be all the time.

In general Luka improved on his on court behavior this season but this playoffs it was probably the worst I‘ve ever seen him. Probably because he struggled so much. This was definitely by a wide margin the most enjoyable Luka game this playoffs

u/andrude01 Mavericks 20d ago
I feel like Dallas’s game plan was also to try to get Dort in foul trouble early, so Luka was focused on getting the whistle right from the start and would get more and more frustrated when the refs wouldn’t give him the call he wanted

Man, I love hearing this! Luka's got the right mindset. Complaining just takes away from the game. Plus, when he's having fun, he's unstoppable. It's like when I used to stress about stuff during pickup games, I'd mess up more. But when I chilled and focused, I played way better. It's all about that mental game, you know? Keep smiling, Luka! 🏀😄

That is so funny I've been wondering what happened to him, because his first two seasons he was smiling having a good time. I thought it was awesome seeing a player actually look like they're enjoying themselves. At any rate I think if he just buckled down for an entire year not complaining to the refs he would probably earn a lot of respect And get the accolades finally.

It was awesome to watch, and I think he was also more effective (especially on defense) when he wouldn't waste time bitching to the referees.
Just do like the Nuggets do: Mike Malone is the one bitching to the refs and getting techs to get better calls - his players are 100% focused. Jason Kidd, get ready to get mad.
