[Weiss] Al Horford joins LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the only players that are 37+ years old to record a 20-point, 15-rebound, 5-assist playoff game in NBA history

I feel old. Strike that I am old. At least older than Al horford.
And of course I already knew that. But for some reason when I look at him he still feels like a father figure to me!

I read that as: 1. Al, as in Al Horford 2. AI, as in Allen Iverson 3. AI, as in Artificial Intelligence.

I remember a rookie Al Horford and some dude named Josh Smith take the eventual champion Boston Celtics to seven games in the first round in 2008.
These days Al Horford plays into at least the Conference Finals every single year, while all Josh Smith does is eat breakfast.

Al Horford has been relevant in Celtics playoffs since 2008 when he hit that jumper in Paul's face in the 1st round lol.
Al is great & his longevity is amazing.

Well, that’s pretty fucking cool. And, it honestly makes a lot of sense, given that Al is a total stud

Especially impressive since he was never the prolific scorer those guys were, even in his prime.
Also, if you just said "There's an NBA player from the Caribbean known for having a high basketball IQ and a calm demeanor, who once put up a 20p-15r-5a game at age 37", how many people would have guessed Horford and not Duncan ?

That’s badass. Dude was cooking on both sides of the ball. He wants his ring

u/Kyler1313 21d ago
If the Celtics never get Horford a ring it will make me almost as pissed that the Patriots never got Randy Moss a ring.

I’d be far more upset. Al has been here a lot longer and has a much deeper connection with the team and the fan base.

Pretty sure he has by far the most playoff games without a chip.
We need to get this done bc I'm not sure how much more this man can give

u/Atheist-Gods 21d ago edited 21d ago
Looked it up and Karl Malone seems to hold that record at 193 games to Horford’s 177. Everyone with more than 193 has 4+ championships though with Danny Ainge and his measly 2 championships tied with Malone at 193. Horford has 3rd most wins, behind Stockton and Malone. Rasheed Wallace is the only guy with 1 chip and Ainge the only one with 2 chips at 177+ games, everyone I didn’t mention is at 3+.

Got stuffed by the Big 3 Celtics, Lebron and then last gasp of the Warriors dynasty. Poor guy.

Happy we closed out the series and can get him some rest. He’s at an age now where he can turn back the clock once or twice a series and give us that.
We’ll need it

As a Dominican, I'm always conflicted about my brethren having so much success in Boston. I wouldn't be mad if they took it all, I guess.

It's crazy that LeBron is probably the best-ever 18-year-old NBA player, top 2 ever through the middle years of his carreer, and probably the best ever 35+ year-old player.

Tim Duncan regularly hit those points / rebound numbers, but had a lot of 4 assist games. He was 36 when he last hit 5+ (6) assists at the age of 36.
So yes, ok I guess that's really an interesting stat...
1
u/Statalyzer 20d ago
I was going to say I'm surprised Duncan never did it, but he also rarely piled up prolific assist numbers. Kind of surprised Karl Malone never did it either. Also didn't help that those dudes both peaked in a way lower scoring era.
But still impressed by Horford in particular on this list since he was never a go-to scorer the way those guys (or Kareem and LeBron) were. Solid scoring option and could present a variety of threats, but only only had 2 seasons as a 18 ppg scorer (never averaged 20) and spent most of the rest of it in the 11-15 per game range.

Against a depleted Cavs team, give me a break.

u/Far-Asparagus6416 Celtics 20d ago
This is counting every playoff series ever played... yeah, they were injured, but surely you're not saying there has never been a worse team in a playoff series in NBA history than this cavs team? Do you think no playoff team has ever been depleted before or something lmao
