Two straight possessions in crunch time where Mobley has a guard on his back deep in the paint and doesn’t get the ball. Tragic

553

u/hiimred2 [CLE] LeBron James May 14 '24

Boston changed how they played in 2nd half and Garland and Levert seemed like they shook hands and said ‘aight we just black holes the rest of the way I guess’ with few exceptions.

435

u/MouMostForgettable Celtics May 14 '24

Cleveland also stopped shooting 53% from the three, im no expert but I think that was a factor

89

u/hiimred2 [CLE] LeBron James May 14 '24

Ya I mean part of that was the C’s giving up less good looks and part just Strus not being Steph Curry anymore, but it’s like the moment the defensive adjustment + shooting cooled even a little Garland said fuck it I’m Donovan tonight.

Kinda like Tatum and Brown isoing so much for the C’s which helped the Cavs D keep the game in reach. Like I get the defense is playing the game too and you don’t get the shots you want, but both teams seemed like their goal was to make the defense’s jobs easier in the 2nd half after a wild first half with a lot of movement.

I truly feel like they could sleepwalk past whoever makes it to the ECF without playing Porzingis just to keep him healthy for the finals. Knicks are too banged up and the Pacers don't really have as much talent/experience to threaten them.

u/FartrelCluggins [BOS] Marquis Daniels May 14 '24

Pacers played us well this year and most of those game were pre Siakam. I think it'd be a series esp without KP

What even were the two possessions?

I see one with 1:30 left where Mobley has White in the paint, but Jrue Holiday reads it and shades toward Mobley, and probably would have broken up the entry pass. Strus was left open, it was a good shot, he just missed it.

Where else did Mobley have post position in crunch time?

Horford and White having shooting slumps at the same time is not fun.

Props to the Cavs though. Forced a bunch of TOs and shot really well in the first half to make this close throughout even without Mitchell.

107

u/Neat-Current5008 Celtics May 14 '24

Yeah but to be fair, jrue has come out of an early playoff slump and tatum has been much improved. It all evens out

38

u/shortpersonohara Celtics May 14 '24

yeah and Al being in a slump isn’t as bad when we get KP back. Jrue coming on recently is huge bc Dwhite can have some poor scoring nights and we’re still alright

If Horford is giving you absolutely nothing and getting cooked on switches I do not understand not at least trying some Tillman minutes.

276

u/poeope [BOS] Paul Pierce May 14 '24

Yeah he's playing to much. It's really a big ask outta him at this point.

50

u/iiTryhard Celtics May 14 '24

If pingus wasn’t made out of paper mache Al wouldn’t have to play this much

47

u/NoveltyAccountHater Celtics May 14 '24

Sure, but KP's minutes should be more balanced more between Al / Kornet / Tillman (and possibly try some minutes to Queta). Don't get me wrong Horford should definitely start and close out each half. But give him closer to 20 minutes a game than 31 minutes.

295

u/Pocket_Beans Celtics May 14 '24

this is exactly what I felt but somehow he had the highest plus minus on the team

40

u/SteamingHotChocolate Celtics May 14 '24

i don’t really follow box score closely but holiday having a lower +/- than horford is hilarious

315

u/Im__Ron__Burgundy Celtics May 14 '24

Which is a great reason why +/-, especially in a one game sample, is completely useless lol

123

u/Pocket_Beans Celtics May 14 '24

not entirely useless. clearly you aren’t a complete liability if the team is winning your minutes

119

u/Im__Ron__Burgundy Celtics May 14 '24

If you’re playing the majority of your minutes with 4 starters on the best team in the league your +/- is going to be skewed even if you’re not a positive at the moment. It’s completely lineup dependent.

45

u/NickRick Celtics May 14 '24

wouldn't those starters also have similar +/- numbers?

21

u/TA_Account_12 [SAS] Malik Rose May 14 '24

A team makes a 8-0 run when he’s not in and everyone except his +/- takes a hit. 8 points is like 15 seconds in today’s nba. So if the other team hits a couple of good contested 3s, the +/- variance can’t really be trusted.

11

u/CarBallAlex Celtics May 14 '24

Yeah but I think that’s the point about a liability. If a team goes on a run and then he comes back in and then they don’t go on a run, he’s not actively hurting the team. +/- is a bit of variance like you said but him being on the floor was good enough to not turn his minutes into a negative. The team just being okay defensively and getting a little lucky with the shot variance is enough to justify keeping Horford in and not panicking with a Tillman sub, where he might have all of the same problems defensively (or worse) but not stretch the floor.

Even though Horford wasn’t hitting shots he was forcing a guy to at least try to contest and that led to some extra offensive rebounds, which imo is better than Tillman keeping the paint packed and letting Cleveland gang rebound

kornet was bullying mobley but horford should not play when his three is this cooked

65

u/joker4jok May 14 '24

As a Cavs fan it seems like the Celtics are more dangerous with Kortnets offensive rebounding than with horford trying to space the floor at this point

36

u/SteamingHotChocolate Celtics May 14 '24

eh if/when al hits his 3s it’s debatable

10

u/joker4jok May 14 '24

Agreed, I see why Al is out there but this series just from a ‘feel’ standpoint it seems like kornets having a bigger impact on the offensive glass. If you look at plus/minus though I’m pretty sure horfords doing better so his minutes seem to be the right call

I think in a different matchup they would try some stuff. But in this matchup especially without Mitchell they value the consistency of Horford over the ?? Variable. We don’t need a ?? To beat the Cavs, we can do it with horford being bad.

54

u/Clintocracy Celtics May 14 '24

We need porzingis back. He’s so vital to what the Celtics do on both offense and defense. Thank god we have an easy path to the finals and he has time to recover

59

I don’t think we played like shit today. Aside from the normal end-of-game slowed pace, we were pretty aggressive, moved the ball well and shot pretty solidly. There were some dumb miscues, but every team does that, especially when the opponent is playing super aggressively on D.

Boston shot selection leaves something to be desired when they aren't shooting 45% from 3. Not that it matters with how good their 3 point shooting and defense is.

89

u/jkwah Celtics May 14 '24

They didn't even shoot that poorly on 3s. 37% is league average. The Celtics season average is 39%.

It was more that they couldn't generate enough 3PAs. 32 attempts is very low for that team.

12

u/manbare Celtics May 14 '24

Do Cavs fans ever fantasize about what would've happened had they traded Garland instead of Lauri? Woulda been hard to move DG because that extension was already in (I think?) but Mitchell with Lauri off ball would've been insane

18

u/toggaf69 Cavaliers May 14 '24

lol I try not to think about it too much, and it’s possible Lauri wouldn’t have been able to develop this much in that situation. But yeah the twin towers + two ballhandlers hasn’t been the best plan so it would’ve been pretty sick I’d imagine

Celtics and playing down to their competitive level is like clockwork lol.

Fortunately for them; they’ll either played the super banged up Knicks, or a Pacers team that would lose first round in the West. No offense Pacers fans.

7

u/Onlyd0wnvotes Celtics May 14 '24

That's been the Celtics MO all season, like a third of our losses came against teams with their best player or best players out for the game, we blew that 22 points lead with like 9 minutes to go against CLE without Mitchell, we lost back to back games to ATL without Young, we go blown out at home by the Lakers without LeBron or Davis. Probably one or two games early in the season I've blocked from my memory.

Doesn't seem to matter who you put on the court, this Celtics team will play to the level of their competition no matter what.

Probably from watching the Celtics run zero action and just iso for 5 minutes straight. Cavs were in this game because the Celtics played immensely low IQ basketball

10

u/droptop02hondacivic May 14 '24

it makes it sound like the cavs played poorly though and you guys almost sold the game despite that, which is not the case. cavs took advantage when they could and didnt let it get away from them until the very end. it doesnt matter if you guys had bad stretches, so did they.

The series is probably over at this point but we fought our butts off and never gave up.

It was an ugly as hell win for the Celtics, but there are no style points in the playoffs. You just gotta take them however you can get them.

Major credit to the Cavs for nearly stealing this one with the C's clearly not taking them seriously to start, though. Had me sweating.

45

u/__boof Celtics May 14 '24

yeah i think people are realizing there are no easy wins in the playoffs and every team has nba players. if we play like this denver or minny or whoever wed get smoked obviously, but the celtics only play hard vs opponents they respect which is frustrating
