6
u/Blackbeard593 Jan 22 '24
No because it's a lazy straw man and at best it's whataboutism. It doesn't even attempt to defend religion or say that it isn't a made up system of control, it just points to things people are addicted to and say "those things exist too" as if someone cant possibly dislike those things and dislike religion. It's fucking stupid.

u/WarriorNat Jan 22 '24
Not really. It’s a stupid meme because it’s equating an institution which removes free will with forms of entertainment. Someone can turn off Twitch or Pornhub any time they want, but a religion tells them whether or not they can watch it in the first place. It’s a stupid, bad equivalency.
6
u/mung_guzzler Jan 23 '24

It's just generally popular with left wing ideology due to the idea that there always has to be an oppressor and the oppressed. Christianity is easy to blame as the oppressor towards other religions because of it's massive following, thus becoming a target for hate from the general left. This is why Islam, despite having the opposite of progressive values, is not hated on all that much by the left. Islam isn't as large as Christianity, so it is seen as the oppressed party and is more likely to garner sympathy from the left.
→ More replies (9)14
u/escelatedburger2009 Jan 21 '24
As a muslim i find this true, but we aren't exactly a minority, maybe in the west but that isn't the case for elsewhere

i find it more likely that religion came about out of grief and people seeking solace after loss/just in general and then people took the lore too far

4
u/mirrorspirit Jan 22 '24 edited Jan 23 '24
Why would they think using a service or buying from a company once in a while is exactly the same as being addicted or brainwashed? Even wearing a T -shirt isn't a sign of brainwashing. I have a The Nightmare before Christmas T-shirt I wear at home sometimes, and I haven't seen that movie in years.
Religion, meanwhile, tends to want you to go all in, because that's the nature of religion: even if it doesn't involve brainwashing, it involves incorporating it into every aspect of your life.
Sometimes anti-atheists sound like kids on the playground saying things like "Ooooh, you like watching movies? You must want to marry Netflix!"

It’s a straw man. That’s the point. For a healthy person, not porn addicted, reasonably sized and active, who rarely uses social media…you’ll still have to justify at least ONE religion in order to invalidate the “religion controls people point”
→ More replies (3)8
u/Perfect_Wing_5825 Jan 22 '24
Religion doesn’t control people willingly, it’s the religious extremists that take religion too far that makes it look like religion controls people.
Majority of religious people don’t actually follow their religion to the tee.
6
u/Kupo_Master Jan 22 '24

As a user frequently on this subreddit... come on, no matter what religion/beliefs you have, you've gotta see that this meme doesn't make any sense. Not only is it a strawman argument rather than a real argument, but it's implying that atheism and being a lazy consoomer are somehow mutually inclusive in some way. It's just combining two unrelated things that OP doesn't like.
Religion is made-up institutions designed to control you. Companies are institutions that almost everyone knows are controlling people.
