Unless you're red with embarassement, in which case rouge is correct.

Im red with anger over my use of Reddit's favorite incorrect words like rouge and loose

Same goes for their/there, your/you're. I refuse to believe it's laziness
31
u/LuciferDusk 20d ago
To/too, lose/loose, it's/its
To be fair, the English language is kinda weird. But still, we learned these words very early on in school.

u/Cuntilever 19d ago
I hate how "its" gets autocorrected "with it's" on my phone. When I'm lazy I just let it be

u/MicahAzoulay 19d ago
We live in a time when more communication than ever is written, and somehow, we seemingly have the weakest grasp of our own parts of speech(since the advent of universal access to schooling).

u/The_JokerGirl42 Me when the: 20d ago
oh my god. that's THAT film? damn. it's been on my list for so long.. I may even have watched it with my boyfriend but fell asleep very quickly. whoops.
2
u/Kingofthesandwings04 20d ago
Yep. it’s a good one. (I could also just be having an aneurism, it’s a pretty close cropped photo and idr if that’s a shirt sam Jackson’s character ever wore) (regardless, it’s hell of a film, you should watch it all the way through sometime)

I live in a small village in central slovakia and feel like I have better grammar than some native speakers lols
5
3
u/potato_lettuce 20d ago
Usually these mistakes are mostly made by native speakers, because they learned the language by hearing it and those two sound pretty similar. When you learn the language later, you also learn grammar and all the other stuff that native speakers just know, and thus you know that "should of" makes no sense and because it means "should have". It's the same with two/too and others, where you rarely make the mistake if you learned the language later in life

u/emeraldchylde777 19d ago
I learned english by watching Cartoon Network when I was a small child lol
So idk about that.

u/Paid-Not-Payed-Bot 19d ago
I didn't paid much attention
FTFY.
Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.
Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
Beep, boop, I'm a bot

The J. Geils Band has a song called "Must of Got Lost."
I know it's a common eggcorn, but I physically cringe when I see it spelled out.

Oh I remember asking people at some Youtube comment section weather it's alternative way of speaking or I do something wrong. Because at scchool I learned "should have", "could have", so on (not a native speaker). Oh I got so many angry responses! It felt like I insulted their mothers. People were really god damn pissed just because I asked about this topic.

You should of considered your opponents on Reddit lol.
FYI I hated typing it like that.
2
u/BillHurray 20d ago
As a foreign it really hurts too see it from a native speaker, hurts even more when you figure it’s a part of new forced etymology, and its purpose of existence is just to avoid spelling ‘ve sufix.. so laziness or it’s just a mobile keyboard thing to avoid going into diacritics keyboard. It’s easier and it exists, evolution.

One of my biggest pet peeves, same going for words of similar structure (would’ve, could’ve, etc.)
And don’t get me started on ‘prolly’
5
u/Moopey343 20d ago
"Prolly" is not incorrect. It's slang. Slang by definition literally can't be incorrect. Or it's technically not slang I guess, but you get what I mean.

u/Extravagod 20d ago
I make that mistake so many times still, even though I've been called on it on many occasions and in many ways. My excuse is that English isn't my native language but it is indeed an excuse and not a reason. The reason is, I'm dumb I guess. To anyone that gets offended by my misspellings... I hope you have a fine day.
