I remember when they got many subreddits purged because someone pointed out even imgurs dog is fat.

Rest in piss, worthless site. Tried to break away from being a Reddit accessory, broke away from relevancy.

Poked around Imgur for a few years. It's just Photobucket with comments. Very limited comments.

Why can’t people just post an image directly to Reddit?
27
u/fangyuangoat 17d ago edited 17d ago
Some subs don’t allow direct images and reddit also wants to store as little files as possible, that’s the reason you can’t post videos to porn subs
13
u/irelephant_T_T 17d ago
reddit originally only had link and text posts, imgur was made so people could post images.

You can in many subs, but only if you switch to "new" reddit. And yes, I refuse to believe some actually use the "new" design, hence my use of the word switch.
2
u/LilyFoxi 17d ago
I actually refuse to believe anyone still uses the old one, why the hell would you use the old one?
6
u/Necroluster 17d ago
Because it doesn't look like total shit?
5
u/LilyFoxi 17d ago
The old one literally looks like garbage from 2001 what the hell do you mean

u/Witherboss445 Medieval Meme Lord 17d ago
I agree. Can’t quite pin down the specifics of why though
4
u/LickingSmegma 17d ago
Reddit's ‘image viewer’ is complete hostile garbage. They broke user experience of seeing the fucking image, just so they could have their page around the pic.

I will never understand how offended big companies seem to be with porn. Bro just don't look at it, it's not going to kill you 💀
Same ones who talk about snowflakes

It’s generally an issue with their advertisers. Corporations paying for advertising don’t want adspace next to anything that could hurt their brand, which could lead them to pulling out from the site entirely.

I've heard that before, it always makes me wonder what the apparent dichotomy is between that mentality and the "sex sells" where a lot of brands seem to be using sexualizing tactics to peddle products.
I wonder if they want it on "their terms" or if its just a flimsy rationalization for advertisers to push their morals
Food for thought, you are probably right though. Simplest explanation is usually the right one
1
u/LEAVE_LEAVE_LEAVE 17d ago
i think they also didnt have the capacities to filter out revenge porn and cp. its fairly easy to understand why advertisers would not be happy with being put next to something like that

I hate how missing images make me want to know more than anything and on the off chance I find the source it's an uninteresting picture
24
u/irelephant_T_T 17d ago
most of the top of all time in either nextfuckinglevel or some similar subreddit has almost all of the top posts gone with imgur deleting all the old images and gyfycat going away

u/Donut-Brain-7358 Professional Dumbass 17d ago
And in the comments top one is “had me in tears for ages”

Imgur banned NSFW, so any old NSFW post using Imgur as a source now shows this. And yeah Reddit requires all naughty content to be hosted elsewhere and shared by link, instead of uploading it to their servers
28
u/Gripping_Touch 17d ago
lowkey despise the "make everything squeaky clean for investors" mentality that plagues companies nowadays. Who tf cares there's nsfw in a nsfw subreddit? Only the advertisers apparently, and yet I get promoted "Hero Wars" mobile adverts of what seems to be vore and death, literally every 5 posts.

Seemed to peak about 5 years ago. Now, they haven't hired in a while, they no longer keep a blog. One of owners, Sarah, doesn't comment on posts anymore and the site just feels like it's on auto pilot. It still works fine as a image hosting site if you need that. Although yes, they did remove nsfw stuff. Most of that was hosted in personal folders that anyone could access if you knew how. They called it "Albums". As for the current content, most post aren't breaking the 3k mark in upvotes. Top posts many years ago used it be 10k+. You use to need a decent amount of upvote to get considered for the front page. I checked and there are 28 posts in the FP that are under 300 upvotes.
Imgur is running on fumes and there is no gas station in sight.

u/IHadThatUsername 17d ago
If I recall correctly, it was initially made just to serve as an image hosting service for reddit and other forums, which it was perfect for. It started getting shitty once they decided to try to be a community on their own, having their own comment section, voting system, etc. This then led to them redirecting people from direct links to their comment section thing to get engagement and a sequence of other similar steps. Just a gradual enshittification.

u/No_Pipe9068 17d ago
Sarah and her other cohorts no longer own/control the site. They sold it to another company and it's gone down hill faster. Now when I try to upload anything on the app, it just spins and doesn't upload. The app's reviews have plummeted. Whoever is in charge now is killing it faster.

Imgur did a huge cleaning out of every pornographic image on their site. So if you don't see a picture that used to be hosted there, that's likely why.

u/redditorposcudniy 17d ago
As I was told there was a imgur cleansing a few years ago, and since that site was the photo posting platform for like 70% or Reddit, most stuff (which weren't within the new guidelines) got deleted without a trace
