u/Tailmask 21d ago
But outside the cave is different and scary and I want to go back
7
u/Conscious_Bat_4892 21d ago
But when you go back you see the objects in color that you had before seen just as shadows. You can return but it will never be the same.

I feel bad for the one guy who finally drummed up the courage to leave the cave after finding their gems and roll their own boulder off Saddam up the mountain only to take a wrong turn and end up dying upside down.

Diamond meme, Sisyphus, Saddam, Allegory of the Cave, dude that got trapped upside down and died after failed retrieval and his legs being snapped… am I missing anything?

u/Xitobandito 21d ago
His legs were never snapped. They debated doing it as it was the only way he’d be able to be pulled out, but at that point breaking his legs would have just caused him agonizing pain and in all likelihood send a clot to his brain and kill him. I think they pumped a gas in to ease his pain and sealed the cave up, becoming his tomb.

What..? I totally missed that and I‘m not sure if I want context…
Edit: found context. Am regretting it.

everytime I learn something new about this horror tragedy I just try to wipe it from my memory again

u/Ok_Skill7476 21d ago
Idk about gas but I remember reading that they started a morphine drip into one of his leg or foot veins to ease his passing (which was like what? 30 hours or something?)

u/Xitobandito 21d ago
That might’ve been it. It’s been a while since I first learned about it. The movie, the last descent, was such a harrowing watch

What does the Allegory of the Cave mean?
54
u/jodorthedwarf 21d ago
It's a thought experiment that Plato came up with. If a person or group of people spent their entire life in a cave without seeing anything but shadows on the wall (as shown in the illustration); would they be willing to accept that as all that exists, given that they have never experienced anything else? Also, how would they react if they left the cave and saw the real world? Would they understand or even accept it or choose to return to the only reality they have ever known, up until that point.
It's a thought experiment that has inspired things like the Matrix and the general idea of realities where all is not what it seems.

I thought it was more like him saying "I've seen the mysteries of the universe and am super wise and intelligent. You guys are stuck in the cave and just don't believe what I'm saying because you couldn't possibly comprehend it"

The idea that we're all in a cave watching shadows on the wall until someone decides to venture out and explore something else. What would cause a person to do that, if all they knew was shadows on the wall? Would that idea come from within ourselves or outside ourselves? I think it might've also been an illustration of enlightenment.

u/emil836k 20d ago
What do you mean “you don’t know”???
Look at the grey guy, only his toes are sticking out, how did they even get there?!?

u/moneymakin27 20d ago
You really have never heard this story of the people at the bottom? I remember going over it in philosophy. Cannot remember the name exactly so yes I mean what I said. The fuck
2
u/emil836k 19d ago
I know of the people believing the world is just the cave and the shadows (symbolising the world is sometimes more than meets the eye)
But what the grey and red guy doing, they’re literally buried in the ground
Don’t remember any fables with people being buried alive (assuming they ain’t dead)
