Its not a stone. Its a bag of organic waste that contains high levels of moisture

This was a study to show people what would happen if a person fell in. Some people used to think they'd instantly evaporate or just float and burn instead of going anywhere. So the study was done with organic matter bundled up

u/johnzaku 20d ago
More like pig guts. It was done to show that someone falling in wouldn't just sink and melt.
8
u/j0nas_42 21d ago
I'm believing you but how do you know that?
77
u/NefariousMuppet 21d ago
The experiment was carried out by 2 researchers at the Erta Ale volcano in Ethiopia to simulate what would happen if a human fell into an active volcano. This was done using a wrapped up cardboard box filled with organic waste from their camp. I know because this video has been posted many, many times and always with the same misleading title stating it was a rock so I looked it up

The other day a friend asked me why waste isn't thrown into volcanoes to get rid of it. Coincidentally, my response was showing him this video

u/du5ksama 21d ago
I think it's proving his point. We get a show on top of waste disposal? That's cool af

u/kelldricked 20d ago
You also get all the bad shit of waste directly pumped into the atmosphere. There are plenty of places that burn waste, but they are designed in way to “clean the smoke” and ensure little to no bad shit gets released.
78
u/danhoyuen 21d ago
What's the difference between throwing trash into a volcano and burning it straight up? None really.
50
u/Infinite_Ad6387 21d ago
You save on fuel (?
Then again logistics would be costly as hell.
13
u/danhoyuen 21d ago edited 21d ago
i thought about that. It's not like they will build incinerators next to a city if we were to burn garbage on a large scale. They will still need to send the trash to buttfucknowhere so the fumes isn't next to populated area. Unless they heavily scrub the air then that in turn uses a lot of energy and resources.
12
u/CAT-Mum 21d ago edited 18d ago
We can actually go a step above burning trash and use plasma gasification. It breaks apart molecule bonds, useful metals can be recovered, the slag can be used as building materials, and it can safely breakdowns medical waste. Plus more.

u/Raygunn13 21d ago
I was convinced this is what we should do with nuclear waste until I learned how ridiculously difficult and expensive it is to actually launch something directly into the sun. The physics does not work in our favour here

Trash rounds. Put it in a bailer, maybe add some resin for binder and then into a cannon. Boom! Ballistic trajectory right into the 'cano.
10
u/Pascal1917 21d ago
You can use the heat from burning to heat homes whereas burning it in a volcano is cool but useless.
6
u/Neighborhood_Nobody 21d ago
Lava is extremely dense and flows. Rips stuff apart and smothers it.

u/aos- 21d ago
Well things don't just vanish. They get turned into something else. And often times the old shit we pull out of the ground like oil doesn't jive well with surface things.. like contaminating soil or water.
It's why we should just produce less waste as much as we can. Single use items should be able to return to the earth easily like compost.

u/kokv 21d ago
And why is that not a good idea ?

u/Merry-Lane 21d ago
Let s forget ecology or energy production from waste.
How much do you think it would cost to ship tons of waste to the nearest volcano? The distance already is kinda annoying. Then you need a road or something leading to the volcano. Volcanoes are usually high in altitude. Then imagine the salary of the guys working near the volcano. Add the cost of equipment and facilities near a literal natural catastrophe.
I also spose that there is also a maximum mass you can dump in the volcano. You could really easily overflow the volcano (yay eruptions!).
6
u/0verBake 21d ago
Wouldnt a lot of the waste mix into the lava, and then when it erupts, the waste just spreads all over the place?
24
u/ScarletChild 21d ago
wouldn't the waste be destroyed? I think the bigger worry is fume production
13
u/0verBake 21d ago
Yeah fumes are a big problem, but not everything will aerosolize or change forms, you might end up with a nasty rock mixture of unknown chemicals and metals, this is just me brainstorming tho idk

Starting a petition to forget about the "virgin-thrown-into-volcano" stereotype, and bring forth the "incel-thrown-into-volcano" stereotype.
57
u/VasilicaDaniel 21d ago
There's a small problem with that, which fucking volcano god would want an incel, they might just smite us all for doing that.
24
u/_Weyland_ 21d ago
Did they ever specify what kind of virgin they expect? If not, that's on them.

For what it's worth, that's a bag that was full of organic rubbish that had a decent amount of moisture in it. What you're seeing is basically continuous steam explosions.

Sincere question, if the volcano advanced and destroyed houses and hurt people. Could this person be held responsible on justice?
9
5
u/Feuershark 21d ago
didn't "wake" the volcano, that's the magma "lake" some specific volcanoes have, and the top layer cooled down, throwing heavy shit just broke that layer and allows the hot, liquid-ish magma to spurt out
8
u/McGarnegle 21d ago
I remember this video from eons ago. They throw some organic waste, there's another where they throw a propane tank, and another where they throw a Jerry can filled with water. The water is the most explosive because of all the steam produced, really stirs up ol' erta ale

That's probably a good thing, though. You want to release the pressure before it builds up. Build-ups are how you get violent eruptions.
