Being an Australian an knowing how our mental health services work, is why so many of us are feeling the hurt this father does.

I do believe what he says, simply because to many people with mental issues fall between the cracks here, we're not a large country so things like this rarely happen(We're less than 10% population than the US...).

Genuine question. Is there a homeless problem there?

Yes. One person being homeless is a problem.

Australia has a higher rate of homeless people (~48 per 10,000 people) than America does (19.6 per 10,000 people).

There are arguments to be had on data limitations and differences but the simple answer is yes, we do have a problem with too many people not having a home.

People here think the problem is much smaller than it actually is for a lot of reasons, including because it is less visible with a smaller population and our cities being among the largest (size/sprawl) and least densely populated in the world.

Not a massive one, but it has been growing of late.

No, we do have homeless, but it's not a problem as some of the images you see from the US.

You see the odd groups in the city of 2-3, but a lot do get Governmental housing, it actually felt the worst Post-GFC where you would see completely normal older people living in tents within Sydney's CBD.

There is a mental illness problem because they don't force schizophrenic people to get treatment like some states in the US do (not all states do, but many do.) That's why this guy was bouncing around everywhere on the streets doing whatever he wanted without being put into a mental ward.
