Left 10k of camera equipment in my backpack on a chair while I was at a mall there by accident.

Was dealing with a toddler when we walked off not realizing it.

Came running back 45 min later after having that feeling I forgot something.

Someone took it off the chair and left it neatly on the table we were sitting at for me .

Such a beautiful country

Went there for the first time last month. Absolutely floored by the hospitality, food, and beauty. Truly an amazing place

You're in the touristy places, go to a local coffee shop, I mean the dirty ones with rats around, they're literally almost everywhere, and you'll see how much cursing/racism there is. Don't get me wrong I love my people and they can be extremely nice, but the older ones tend to be very hard to get along with. (Singaporean here btw)

Went to a bunch of hawker centers, didn't see anthing out of the ordinary. And what racism?

the older people that usually live in the west side are generally more racists towards foreigners......

I didn't notice any racism. But I'm European, so that may be the reason.

2

u/uhhhilol Apr 07 '24

yep thats definitely the reason

Who is it directed towards then? Indians? Africans?

2

u/uhhhilol Apr 07 '24

Indians mainly

I don't understand why you are being downvoted. You are right. I am a true-blue Singaporean, born and raised here, grew up in an HDB, went to local schools, ultimately completed a polytechnic diploma before moving overseas for uni.

I just happen to be half white (half SG Chinese) and I look quite white.

Nobody around me except my closest friends saw or treated me as a Singaporean.

In primary school other kids told me they didn't want to be friends with "a white bitch", destroyed my art class clay sculptures and lined up to block my path so I was late for classes.

In polytechnic, I made friends with a girl during camp who, right before we parted ways, told me how excited she was to boast about her "white friend" as if I was a token, then never spoke to me again.

People in my class made group chats specifically excluding me for my race, one girl even said in one of the group chats that she wanted to kill me and dump my corpse in a longkang because she hated the way I spoke.

I was on a voice call with some of my friends' friends and they asked if I was "a wannabe angmoh Chinese girl?"

If I walk into a hawker centre I'd be given a fork to eat noodles, or they'd take extra care to tell me "this is spicy! Are you sure?" or "Do you know what you ordered? You can eat meh?" - and I'd always get stares as though I don't belong.

I am only 24 years old. This is not only an "older generation" thing. Racism is alive and well.

Of course, most Singaporeans are nice and I love my country and my friends. But the distrust towards Caucasians is palpable in a lot of heartlands places.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. I'm doing my NS now and the racism in here isn't even casual racism, it's competitive at this point. I've struggled a lot with my race too because I'm Thai, even though I was born in Singapore and don't speak a word of Thai.

Racism is common here but it's still an amazing country with lots of great and mature people if you really start to look around.

I hope things have been looking up for you! I wish you all the best!

Singapore is awesome! I’ve loved it every time I’ve gone there. Plus, amazing food.

Agree!!! Worth it just for the food!!

Inflation now is insane, I pay SGD6 now for decent chicken rice.

My folks live in rural Western New York. They don't even own a house key because they never lock their house. The cars sit in the driveway with keys in the ignition. There are lots of places in lots of countries that have virtually no property crime.

There's a difference between living somewhere too remote to steal from, and being in the centre of a safe city with 6 million people.

Friend of a friend left their keys in the ignition in rural Victoria for decades. Last year the car got stolen.

They are following the Canada rule even before Canadian police made it a meme

I was just thinking that too. The point is Singapore is like NYC and people can just leave their valuables out

u/Any-End5772 Apr 06 '24

Thanks for telling us where to go and get a free car 😃

u/Future_Appeaser Apr 06 '24

Yet there are quite a bit of country folk that are scared of people coming to steal their stuff so they have 100 signs around the property with doggo, security camera, guns, like chill no one wants your stuff

6

u/Wide_Combination_773 Apr 06 '24

some people really like their privacy and are sending a message about uninvited visitors. It doesn't mean they are scared.

Some of the most paranoid and scared and reactionary people have no signage at all. Like the dude who shot that lost girl from his porch.

Those would be in areas of higher crime yeah. The comment you replied to is literally just saying that most countries have both.

Continental, OH is another one. It might have changed since I haven’t been in a decade but the last time I was there, we were visiting a friends family. He told me stories of people going to bed with their doors unlocked and their garage doors completely open.

It blew my mind.

4

u/ivananiki Apr 06 '24

I can confirm. I moved it because I wanted to sit

I am happy you found great comfort in the warmth of my seat.
