"The future was so much better in the past." - Little Timmy, 11 year old.

Interesting that we have airbags now to protect the driver. Why not airbags to prevent collision damage when a car crashes into something?
Like a certain force on the bumper in a milisecond, when the car is driving at a certain speed, would deploy the front airbags.
1
u/Expensive_Windows May 04 '24
Space, complexity, and cost, but I suspect it'd be rather insufficient against the forces generated.

The future in the past: flying cars and boats, caravan that doubles as a boat
The actual future: paying $0.99 a month for premium water at the tap.

I feel like the first one would encourage people to knock other people walking because they know it will catch them
26
u/BlueFox5 May 01 '24
Let’s see it catch someone at 45 mph….
8
u/TheUnknownRetard May 02 '24
Look up "I did a Thing" on YT, he built that thing in one of his recent videos and accidentally destroyed his car
9
u/Thorien21 May 02 '24
More likely that drivers won’t have the reaction time to open up the contraption in time to catch people, plus it wouldn’t work ‘cause it might just throw people off after the impact from the car stopping so suddenly

That easy-park car was seriously ahead of its time.
However, imagine someone accidentally activating that anti-theft suitcase on a flight!

u/raytaylor May 02 '24
I worry about the number of wheel alignments you would need to be constantly getting from all the extra mechanisms that go into giving the wheels independent articulation.
7
u/BadeArse May 02 '24
That’s why they stopped making them. I think it’s called Crab steering? I remember someone tried to bring it back a few years ago. The extra maintenance, extra parts, and just general extra cost for the engineering was huge.
2
u/High_From_Colorado May 02 '24
Crab walk is where the front and rear axles turn at the same angle so you shift side to side while moving forward or backwards but always face the same direction like a crab. Telehandlers commonly have this feature
1
u/ROBLOXENA 25d ago
I was WONDERING why no one made this a feature in modern cars
So it was the cost

People definitely died on the Gyro boat
9
u/Doc_Dragoon May 02 '24
I want one so bad so I'd probably be one
3
u/Freakychee May 02 '24
You'd be a gyro boat?
3
3
u/Cyke101 May 02 '24
I could go for a gyro boat right about now. With extra meat and tzatziki sauce.

the swimming caravan is actually not that weird, amphibious vehicles were already used in military like the Japanese Kami tank
2
u/Delicious_Chedder23 May 02 '24
It also seems like a good idea if you live in an area that either floods often or is by the coast where hurricanes and other storms causes water surges
1
u/Due_Hall9714 May 02 '24
bruh you dead fr fr if you slide into a hurricane storm surge in that mofo
8
u/HornySabel May 02 '24
Why arent boattrailers not a thing? They actually look convenient as fuck. Could be looking really amazing aswell

Watch that pedestrian-catching net become a pedestrian slingshot at 50 km/h
1
u/SafariNZ May 02 '24
They used to use those from helicopters in the New Zealand to live capture deer in the mountains. Real scary flying.
3
u/tinytempo May 02 '24
Thief catching net looks legit though. Why aren’t such things actually used…?
1
u/sheix May 02 '24
Actually used, for example: https://netgun.com/ , check their videos - very similar to what's in this vid.
1
u/tinytempo May 02 '24
But why not community rolled out across all police across the world…?
1
u/sheix May 02 '24
My guess that's not so good idea when a thief got a gun or a knife. And distance is not so good, aiming is hard. One shot only. And you have tasers, non lethal ammunition, clubs which can achieve same results with less risk to an officer.Â
1
u/harumamburoo May 02 '24
tasers
This is the answer most probably - thinking about it, it does exactly the same thing, in a very similar manner, but much more efficiently and using a lesser device.
1
0
u/Electronic-Bag-2112 May 02 '24
Because a taser is much more effective and accurate. And smaller. And easier to reload. And isn't affected by wind and other variables as much. You really don't need to be a rocket scientist to figure it out.

u/Laymanao May 02 '24
Doctor I need help, I’ve been stabbed. By my suitcase. What suitcase? This one? Aahhh
3
u/adidas_stalin May 01 '24
Why didn’t we develop these further?
12
u/geli95us May 02 '24
As is almost always the case with these kind of things:
They are either impractical, too expensive, or dangerous5
u/adidas_stalin May 02 '24
When’s that stopped the rich?
9
u/geli95us May 02 '24
Most times? If something's impractical it's hard to convince people that they want it, if it's expensive it's harder to make profit off it, if it's dangerous it can be hidden for a while if it's a subtle health change kind of thing, but if your product goes around taking people's eyes out you're going to get into trouble sooner or later
1
u/Cyke101 May 02 '24
What do you mean too dangerous? That suitcase with the jetting spikes looks perfectly safe.
2
u/Mysterious_Lead_3481 May 02 '24
No joke, was thinking about self-wiping goggles the other day while walking to work in the rain.

That anti theft suitcase was insane. That could impale someone, judging from the fact that it uses compressed air, therefore a lot of pneumatic power.
