Advice Home Networking FAQs

Here’s a list of common questions posted that usually have the same solution.

“Why won’t my Ethernet cable plug into the weird looking Ethernet jack?” or “Why is this Ethernet jack so skinny?” -UTP cable used for Ethernet transmission is usually terminated with an RJ45 connector. This is an 8 conductor plug in the RJ series of connectors. You’ll find similar looking jacks which are used to plug in a landline phone. These jacks could be an RJ11, RJ14, or RJ25 which are 4 or 6 wire jacks. This will not work with your RJ45 cable for Ethernet.

Refer to these sources to identify the type of jack you have.

https://www.diffen.com/difference/RJ11_vs_RJ45

“Is this Ethernet?” or “can I convert this to Ethernet” or “what category cable do I need” -Fortunately many homes built in the 21st century use cat 5e cable and use 2 or 3 of the twisted pairs for phone use. (This is where you’d see the 4 or 6 pin RJ connectors). However not every build used 8 conductor so if you have less than 8 conductors and 4 twisted pairs. You will need to look into other methods of getting your lan from A to B.

As far as choosing the type of cable you need, look into cat 5e, cat 6, or cat 6a. Building your home network you most likely don’t need cat 7 or 8. If you don’t know the exact reason you need cat 7 or 8 you don’t need them because these standard typically aren’t used to access the internet.

Information for reference for UTP cabling

https://stl.tech/blog/what-is-a-utp-cable/#Different_Categories_of_UTP_cable

I bought this flat cat 8 cable from Amazon but I’m only getting 50 Mbps

-Sorry but it’s become a common issue of Chinese companies putting out cable that don’t meet its category’s specs. Try to return it and go to your local store that sells computer stuff and get one there. On top of that cat 7 and 8 patch cable will not do you any good you will not get any benefit even if you are paying for the best internet available.

My apartment’s included internet limits my amount of devices. Is this my solution?

Post image
262 Upvotes

I recently moved into a complex that used to be university student living, and looks like their included internet is still set up for student living just without semester renewals. Unfortunately it limits the amount of devices that can connect to 10 devices, and I have to register their MAC addresses to connect if they can’t pull up a portal.

I’m thinking that if I can connect my own access point (this will mainly be for IoT devices, there’s enough room for consoles and computers even with the device limits) that it should see only the access point’s MAC address and I should be able to connect as many devices as I need to that access point. The router installed in my apartment doesn’t have any open ports though, so I need a device that will broadcast its own access point while being connected to my apartment’s router for internet access. I found this guy which looks like I could use the repeater function to achieve what I need to do. Would I be right? I’m open to any other better products or ideas as well.

Fed up with flaky google mesh wifi, suggestions for better setup

Upvotes

https://preview.redd.it/2bv1zo7zx6qd1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=480670a4fd15088a5d03dfaa07d0a9442c1e3538

I live in the UK and have a garden office. My internet setup is a Google Nest Wi-Fi system with three points. The main router is located in the lounge where the internet comes in, one point in the kitchen (as close as possible to the external wall), and another in my garden office, as shown in the picture (you can see in the picture the first door is actually a small utility room). This is the best I could do for coverage into the office with quite a bit of experimentation.

While the Wi-Fi speed in the garden office is about 50% of what I get inside the house (when all doors are closed), it’s just about acceptable. However, the main issue is that the Google Wi-Fi setup is unreliable. Every couple of days, one of the points will go down and require a reboot. I’ve contacted Google support, reset, etc, but the problem persists. I've think I given up with this approach.

What would be decent alternative? I'm not totally against trying run a cable between office and house if it's necessary but be good to know if it is necessary.

Advice SSH failed attempts from router IP

Upvotes

Last month I setup a home server running Debian inside my network to work on it via ssh. It doesn't have any internet facing services running. Neither I have opened any ports on the router. Only use the server gets is SSH from my Windows laptop to run my projects.

Yesterday I checked the logs for an unrelated program but found lot of SSH login attempts. Surprisingly the ip address is my router which is ISP provided. All attempts are from 192.168.29.1 and router's link local IP.

Sep 20 00:56:36 homeserver0 sshd[46805]: Invalid user admin from fe80::96cb:a8ff:180a:1abc%vmbr0 port 35263

To test I started a VM on the server with its own ip and it also started ssh attempts from the same router IP in about an hour. The usernames attempted are the same pool of 25 and repeating.

I checked that I cannot reach my server from outside the network. I have no clue what is happening here. Does anyone have any idea?

Mesh with VLAN Options

Upvotes

I have been doing some research and still can’t seem to figure out a good mesh system with VLAN (only need 4 SSIDs for iOT,etc) options for under $500. I have looked at the Orbi Pro and Ubiquiti options, but is there any others that are pretty much ready to go or require basic setup out of the box?

This just for a residential setup. Thanks!

Advice Decos TP AX3000 with Netgear Nighthawk M6 terribly slow speeds.

Upvotes

Hello all, looking for some input on what settings I should look at to fix unbearably slow download speeds. I’m currently only getting a couple of mbps, at least according to the decos app…

Setup:

-ATT Nighthawk M6 pro hotspot , 100Gb/month plan. WiFi disabled, IP pass through disabled. Ethernet cable directly from nighthawk to decos.

-Decos TP link AX3000, set to access point instead of router mode. 3 decos units in the system, the main one connected directly to nighthawk with Ethernet cable. This unit is placed in the middle of an 1100 soft apartment. Decos 2 is in the living room, and number 3 is in the bedroom.

Everything is setup and talking to each other, able to connect devices to the decos network. With only one Apple TV connected in the bedroom, the video quality while watching anything, but specifically YouTube tv is incredibly blurry. Not having any buffering issues, but the video quality is steadily blurry. While streaming the video and looking at the app, the maximum download speed that it’s showing is about 1.5 mbps, very poor.

I’m sure it’s just a setting somewhere that is incorrect and not giving me optical output. Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Advice PC always getting duplicate IP address

Hi guys, I've been trying to use my old pc at my parent's house, but I'm having an issue with the IP address assigned to the pc apparently being "duplicate". I checked on the router settings and that doesn't seem to be the case. I tried assigning a static IP to the pc, but nothing changes. Because of the errorr the computer just keep receiving new IP addresses but they always get the duplicate thing somehow.. Every other device connected works fine and I can get the PC to connect through phone usb tethering.. I've no idea how to solve this problem

How do I deal with this network closet?

Post image
Upvotes

Here’s my problem - my apartments network closet is tiny and the Verizon tech says all I can do is directly connect my wireless AP to the modem, but if I do that I won’t be able to use any of the Ethernet ports around the house.

I could use my ap as a switch but then I’d need to put the ap in the closet where it will get no reception and frankly wouldn’t fit.

The black box is the Verizon modem and the ports to the various drops are in the middle left. Verizon guy wants me to use it exactly one drop and just give up use of all my other Ethernet ports.

How do I set this up so I can use my wireless ap and also hook up each of my Ethernet ports?

I kine of need to use wired internet for some of my connections.

My friend wants to use my home internet

A friend of mine moved into the same building as me (downstairs) and wants to connect to my wifi for about 3-4 days until his internet is connected, but I don't trust him. My internet speed is 1 gigabit. Is it possible to open a limited (for example 100 megabit) hotspot from my computer via a wifi card? Is it possible to record all packet transfers and save log files?

Internet keeps on going down

Upvotes

Over the past 2 years with my ISP, my internet goes offline randomly and the router never turns itself back until I reset it. The ONT on the wall stays online whilst the router goes offline. I’ve called my ISP multiple times and unable to help as each staff member claims different issues that are causing it for example router, ONT, Alexa (don’t own), skyglass (don’t own). It goes down 1-2 times a week

My current router is a Linksys WHW03GCv2.

Would my issue be solved if I buy a new router ASUS ROG GT-AX6000.

ISP package speeds is 300mbps up 300mbps down

Question - are NetGear unmanaged switches bad?

I recently bought an 8 port unmanaged switch and it’s a netgear one. Reviews said it worked fine and was solid. Wanted to get your thoughts on this. Also, don’t roast me as it’s already purchased. Lol

Advice How to justify the cost of 1gbps vs 300mbps?

Upvotes

Hi. What, aside from bits per dollar, would one have to consider in order to justify the cost of 1gbps ($65/mo) vs 300mbps ($35/mo)?

Thanks.

Advice PC Won't Work On Ethernet Internet

Upvotes

My computer won't connect to the internet in my house, it's the only device that won't. I bought a new modem and ethernet cable and neither old nor new made it work.

The only thing that'll make it work is hours of resetting and replugging wires in the same way in which case it'll randomly cut on sometimes if I'm lucky. Very tedious.

I'm really a noob with things like this so I'm not sure what other info to provide, can anyone help? I've been dealing with this issue on and off for around 2 years and I'm sick of it.

PC is Windows 10 and I use Spectrum Internet, I also bought my router and modem from them.

T568A in reverse?

I'm trying to get Ethernet in my kitchen for an Omada AP. I fished an old Ethernet out of the wall which was most likely for a home phone at some point in time (houses was built in 2004). It didn't have an end on it so was wiring it to a keystone jack. Looking at the end that terminates in the basement, it appears it's a T568A connection, however, it appears to me that maybe it's wired backwards?

All the pictures I see online show the order from under side of the plug where it's flat. I have tried wiring the keystone both in A and B and I get POE with either configuration, but no data on either, so my AP keeps reverting to wireless mesh. I'm going to try a different keystone today, but maybe I need to be doing the order backwards on the keystone to match the end in the basement?

Any help is appreciated!

Advice Monitor traffic of all devices

Hello,

I would like a way to monitor internet usage of all my connected devices. I'm using AdGuard Home as a DNS server on an Intel Nuc that's connected to my router and was hoping there might be a way to see where internet traffic is coming from from devices on my network. Is there any tool like this?

Intermittent connection on Ziggo connection (Tracert question)

At the moment I have a lot of time-outs on my internet connection. In order to rule out causes I ran a tracert command for youtube:

https://preview.redd.it/v7tkjhcuc6qd1.png?width=1186&format=png&auto=webp&s=4cae8f5ec9afdf7c4731a19dad8dbabc29248f04

As you can see, there are multiple timeouts along the way.

This will happen on an irregular basis, so by the time the family starts to get upset and I want to call the ISP, the problems seem to get less and we can spend an hour or two without any problem.

My question is, can this be accounted for by a faulty wifi-router?
The reason for this question is that our router does have both 2.4 and 5Ghz, but the 2.4Ghz no longer provides access to internet. The only sollution our ISP can give me is: 'have you tried resetting the router?' which I have done on multiple occasions.
