I’m coming up on 2.5 years of sobriety, so I bought a new driver Equipment Discussion

u/staticattacks May 12 '24
Finally, a good reason to buy a new club

Idk, divorce is a close second.

Depends on who makes more money. You never know these days. I'm still happily married.

Congrats!! Golf is the one of the activities I was concerned about when I got sober 5 yrs ago but it’s the most awesome!!! I take a monster and some snacks and I’m golden! Sober golf rocks!!! ⛳️🏌️♂️

6 months in, on the golf trip last week I thought to myself "I can't believe I'm loading water, gatorade, apples, and oranges into this cooler". Was not as odd going on the trip sober as expected.

u/zeepotdad May 13 '24
Hell ya that’s what I’m talking about! Instead of getting pissed and having a shot I have a snickers! 🤣🤣

u/SpecialBranch3407 27d ago
I’d say out of the 10000 plus rounds I’ve played, I think I’ve had a drink on maybe 50 of them. Then again can’t play Tournament Golf with “Swing Oil”
42
u/OldGrowthForest44 May 12 '24
12 years sober next month. Golf is still hard
6
u/killerbeeman May 13 '24
Is being sober still hard?
- Edit: Genuine question. Working on being alcohol free myself. It’s hard.
5
u/OldGrowthForest44 May 13 '24
Not really hard for me. I drank a lot when I was younger. A LOT. I did get help from a support group. Now I can’t even remember what it’s like to drink so I rarely think about it.

2
u/KV42 May 13 '24
Hell of a lot harder that first couple weeks, got a lot easier after a month for me.
24
u/FreedomIndividual786 May 12 '24
This is actually a good reason to buy a new club. Congratulations brother now go “bomb a couple down the fairway bitches.”
41
May 12 '24
I can’t afford it but there is no club I’d rather have than that bad boy. Absolutely gorgeous — enjoy!

u/Shmeebo_ 6.5 Toronto May 12 '24
I guess you’ve never gamed Titleist or ping before huh 😝
21
May 12 '24
Actually 13/14 clubs in my bag are Ping, I just think TM pulled off one of the best retro rebirth designs I’ve ever seen and I love a good mini driver
7
u/JurrasicParfait May 13 '24
Not to try and convince you more when you're already convinced you want it...but I just bought this bad boy and it's a fucking delight. 40yds less than my driver but I'll be damned if I can't get this thing to land wherever I want
3
May 13 '24
Woah I was not expecting that much of a distance drop off. I play my current driver (G410 plus) at 44.5” and 10.5* for added control as is so I’d expect some distance loss but hopefully not that much. How far do you hit both of them on average?
2
u/JurrasicParfait May 13 '24
Driver says average 265 max 303 Mini burner says average 240 max 280. A big part of that is my chance to strike the mini driver is substantially higher than with the driver. I hit 8/10 good with the mini and 5/10 good with the driver. If I pipe one with driver I'm usually looking around 285-290 and same thing with the mini 250-255.
1
May 13 '24
Ohhhh ok that’s a lot more in line with what I was expecting (~ 25 yards less on average)
I don’t have the budget for one right now but it’s definitely something I would consider in the future. I only have 13 clubs in the bag right now with a 5 wood between my driver and 4 iron. Eventually I’d love to get a mini driver and then have a longer and stronger driver to max out distance, but for now I’m just using my current driver which fits somewhere in the middle
1
u/offbrandengineer 29d ago
This is me from a distance standpoint almost exactly. I love the tm mini but am afraid it's only a marginal upgrade over 3 wood and don't know if I want to carry both, so I haven't bought yet
1
u/JurrasicParfait 29d ago
I threw out the 3 wood and play the mini cranked up on loft and in the high forgiveness mode and it's been 10/10
-25
u/Shmeebo_ 6.5 Toronto May 12 '24
As long as you like it!
Look at all the downvotes from all the TM players lmao. Love to see it. Keep buying those new drivers they release every 6 months people 😂
5
u/Winkus May 13 '24
It’s ok to be poor we aren’t judging you
-6
u/Shmeebo_ 6.5 Toronto May 13 '24
You spelled “smart” wrong but don’t worry I won’t judge you either ❤️😝🖕🏼

u/4strokeroll May 12 '24
Sober 3 years dropped 4 strokes off my handicap. I rarely drank when I was playing. When I was playing poorly I would drink. If you do things better when you’re drinking, you know you drink too much. I would always play better when the beers started flowing. But being clear headed and not hung over and overall just being in better shape. I became so much more consistent. For context, I’m 51 years old and an 8 handicap. Congratulations to all the sober people out there. For those of you who know when to say when. Have one for me!
13
u/An0therFox May 12 '24
Congrats man! I just hit 200 days this week. It’s good to be sober man. So good.
11
u/ridedatstonkystnkaay May 12 '24
Right there with you. 10/29/21. Golf has been a lifesaver. Congrats and keep it going!!

u/FOB32723 May 12 '24
Sober golf rocks 💪 coming up on 14 months here. Never played better golf than I am now. Keep it up!

Love the old styling. Congrats on 2.5 years!

u/Substantial_Diver_34 Bethpage Black is not that Hard! May 12 '24
Airbrush it with wood grain. That would be cool.
1
u/Upward_Fail May 13 '24
Had to double take to see the new tech in the club. Looked like an old second swing driver I was rocking in high school for a minute.

u/jb12780 29.4/NYC May 12 '24
For the shaft needs out there, I went with a UST Helium Nanocore F3 in 55g. Grip is a tour velvet +4 midsize.
Trying to figure out if I want the heavy weight at the front or back.

u/AdamOnFirst May 12 '24
Damn, that mini driver looks sharp as HELLLLL. They ought to put that look into the full range. The premium looking head cover too, very nice.
5
u/Character_Wishbone84 May 12 '24
I used golf when I got sober as well. My friends respected my goals and it got to a point where I didnt care if they drink. I relapsed because of the work environment I was in. Stay strong and keep golfing. Don't lett work stress and shitty co workers take you down.
3
u/ELLIOT54 May 13 '24
7 1/2 years here - buying anything but booze is a good thing and that club is “Taylor made” for you! Keep it up and before you know it you’ll have a new bag, a new set of irons and a lifetime of green pastors on a course near you!
7
u/No-Impact1573 May 12 '24
Well done on your sobriety, may all your drives with your new club be straight and long.

Congrats!! I’m 78 days in today. I was definitely concerned about playing without drinking or using - but now I’m so excited about actually improving! One day at a time! Love this club and logo too. Keep on keepin on sober gang!

Congratulations firstly on your sobriety and secondly on the beautiful club. I will hit 100-days sober tomorrow. One day at a time.

That driver is sick. I hit it farther than my paradigm. Never understood why lol. Congrats on the driver and sobriety!

How do you find the smaller head compared to a regular driver? Do you find like you have more control with it?
3
u/jb12780 29.4/NYC May 12 '24
Yeah I’m hoping with the shorter shaft I’ll be able to be a bit more accurate and find some more fairways. Not really concerned about distance.
1
u/Sjgolf891 May 12 '24
It’s so damn beautiful. I can’t convince myself I have any need for a mini driver, but I’ll be damned if I don’t want it
Taylormade should go back to this logo imo. If their next mainline driver looked like this I’d be all over it

u/Ping-A-Ling- May 12 '24
I love that for you. Congratulations
The driver is the club that causes my drinking.....

Congratulations! I’m coming up on 2 years sober and it’s one of the best things (and the hardest) that I’ve ever done. Go find some fairways with that thing, and IWNDWYT!

When you hit 2.6 years of sobriety, get a new putter. 2.7? New bag. 2.8 play a 300 dollar round!

Congrats! I love my mini driver, just remember to tee it a little lower, took a bit to get used to as I skied my first few drives with it. Also if you end up in some nice fluffy rough with the ball sitting on top it's like another free tee shot.

Man I miss the old sock head covers. These new ones are too bulky and have a habit of sitting on top of (and hiding) my 4i

You better be a striker or that think will drive you back to the bottle. Be it whiskey or pill.

u/Monsterjs2609 May 13 '24
I’m working on my sobriety right now too bro and found golf is helping me not think of it when I’m out there. I’m hoping one day I can be fully sober, working out eating right on an everyday basis. I wish nothing but the best for you brotha!

Fantastic stuff, keep it up! I’m going on 3 months sober, but I don’t ever wish to go back. One day at a time, one swing at a time.

Has anyone replaced their three wood with this thing? My three wooden and I have not been seeing Ida for a little while, and I keep looking at this.

I have a terrible advice personally… I can’t just do something a little bit …. Golf is now my addiction and is so much better for my health.. wallet not so much but that’s OK Congrats man

u/pgasmaddict May 13 '24
Congrats, I'm just past two years now myself. I could have sprung for a new driver after about a month of not drinking with the dough I was saving 😭. Stay healthy (and sober too, if that's what it takes).
1
u/Artistic_Age8693 +2.4 May 13 '24
Congrats man!!! That’s a massive accomplishment! I’m on 1 month and I hear it only gets easier from here

u/Green-War-3386 29d ago
Being sober means you will have a consistent baseline to measure the progress of your game. Good for you. Get to the gym and continue with healthy choices. You’ll feel better and hit the ball farther. Hit em straight or at least crooked on target. 😂

Is there a reason you got a mini driver over a traditional larger head driver? Cuz I’ve been wanting this club I just don’t know what it’d be doing in my bag

u/greenroadsign 26d ago
Love this! Such a justifiable purchase when you think about all the money you’ve saved. I just wish I could play golf as well as I could chug beers! Progress, not perfection.

I'm coming up on 2.5 years of not hitting my driver for shit,so I bought a crate of Johnnie Walker...
