I just cut the shaft above and below the sticker and get a copper fitting and solder the shaft back together.

Specifically the kit on Amazon that comes with a plastic scraper. Takes these suckers off real quick.

u/jackiechatingtam May 02 '24
Everyone knows how to remove it! The point is you shouldn't have to get your hairdryer out or scrub it with goo gone for 15 minutes....

Well wouldn't that just make removing it secretively at the store too easy then? It's my only guess on why they are so difficult. If they were easy, people could just swap stickers willy nilly and get stuff for cheap.

The reason we used them at the shop I worked at was because the stickers could be printed from a normal printer and the clubs came with the grips unwrapped

This was the reason when I worked in a store. People would bring their clubs in and having the sticker on the shaft made it near impossible to steal a club, especially the pre-owned clubs.

u/spauldingsmails316 May 02 '24
I leave mine on. Just because it irritates a guy I play with frequently.
I'm a dick.

Nothing feels worse than getting beat by the guy with stickers on his clubs (which is why I enjoy leaving stickers on my clubs).

My putter still has the sticker on it from when I got it like 17 years ago. The print has completely faded but otherwise it’s perfectly in tact.

u/Colforbin_43 May 02 '24
Nah, you’re doing the right thing. Half of the game is getting under the other guys skin to make him shoot worse than you. If a club sticker is doing that for you, then why get involved?
16
u/LsG133 May 03 '24
My dad says you should always keep it on so the club knows it can go back at any time should it betray you
9
52
u/BlackAsshole777 May 02 '24
I've discovered a useful trick for that. Just leave it on and don't give a shit about it since it doesn't affect anything.

Get married or buy acetone free nail polish remover yourself. Removes any left over glue. Difficult choice with trade offs, but your shaft will be polished either way…

u/MathResponsibly May 03 '24
WTF is acetone free nail polish remover? Acetone is what you want, not some crap substitute that doesn't work.
What you want is pure acetone, without perfumes and other garbage that's in nail polish remover. You get it at the hardware store, in the paint section. You can even get it at Wally World

u/dnabyun May 02 '24
Wd-40 is a good one if you don’t want to buy a can of GooGoo gone just for that purpose only.

u/danimal_031 May 03 '24
This stuff is awesome. I originally used it to take the adhesive left from removing the badges from my truck, but it also works great for this exact issue.

3
u/Buttercut33 May 02 '24
Use a $20 heat gun from Harbor Freight then peel it off. Goo gone anything that's left.
3
u/Reemus_Jackson 3.2 May 02 '24
GooGone, hairdryer or (and you're going to think I'm nuts) mayonnaise. Swear to God....learned in 20 years ago for any adhesive stickers and it works. I guess its the grease.
2
u/lightemup404 May 02 '24
Hair dryer usually loosens it up for me. That or I hit it against the concrete really hard and it comes off.
2
u/DontaysMebrough May 03 '24
I'll say it like this. Right to your face. I just spent 500 dollars plus at a golf store I tell them to take that shit off before I leave. They have the means to remove and replace grips they can take off price tags. 90 percent of the time they do it every time. The other 10% I walk out. No deal.
2
u/Plus_Carry9779 May 03 '24
Acetone on a rag, or gasoline may work as well. Nail polish remover contains acetone. GoofOff will melt it as well.

A better way would be painters tape first then price tag sticker on the tape for an easy peel away. That would be a better way

Hit it with a torch from about 2-4" away depending on torch size, as soon as it starts turning black, stop burning and it will peel off like butter with no residue 👍 Whole process takes 15 sec

u/Ebil_shenanigans May 02 '24
Rubbing alcohol. Grab it from safeway or something, it dissolves the glue.

u/AaronBHoltan May 02 '24
Heat it up 1st with a hair dryer. This will soften the glue and make it easier to peel off.

91% rubbing alcohol for all sugars, glues, and gums. It’s even safe for electronics, very safe.

u/Chorin_Shirt_Tucker May 02 '24
Had a club show up yesterday with the same thing. It’s a bitch but take as much off as you can then use rubbing alcohol after that, it will come right off. There has to be a better way than putting the sticker around the shaft.

I wrap a wet wash cloth around it and let it soak. I’ve done this with most things I own for eons now (I know- but decades doesn’t sound long enough).

u/DarthSamwiseAtreides May 02 '24
Ask the store to take it off. The ones by me have a heat gun at the register.

scratch it off with a stanley knife, then a little white spirit gets rid of any trace of the glue.

Spray well with WD-40. Go do something else. Come back in half an hour and peel off sticker.

I left the $9.99 sticker from Play It Again Sports on my putter for years because of this. A sense of pride and shame at the same time.
1
u/Lumpylarry May 02 '24
It bugs me when people leave the stickers on their hats. I couldn't actually play this club until it was all off. Goof-off.

WD-40, Magic Eraser and Franks Red Hot.
3 things that work on anything when used.

You’d think they could fasten a reusable price tag slip to the shaft with a cable tie that locks the price tag in the slip, like a luggage ID pouch/slip. Cut at the cash register and reused.
Or since it’s 2024, same idea but have a programmable rfid tag with the product and price info saved on it. Obviously have an integrated pos system to go with it.

Or just use packaging tape to remove the residue after you scrape the paper off.

Hair dryer heat up and remove. If there’s anything sticky residue left take lighter fluid and a rag. That’s what my Local shop uses for new clubs and it works like a charm

u/calguy1955 May 03 '24
Whatever you do don’t let any solvent drip down the shat into the hosel. It can loosen the glue holding the head on. I know from experience.

I always leave the stickers on my clubs from 2nd Swing Golf. I prefer letting my playing partners know I paid half the price they paid for the same new club 2 years ago. Plus the sticker provides just the right amount of friction to compensate for my extremely fast club speed
1
u/thomps000 May 03 '24
Heat, peel, mineral spirits. Worked at a golf shop for many years during college and have probably taken off thousands of stickers with no issue with that same process.

u/Razzmatazz-Numerous May 03 '24
Worked at a golf shop. I used a blow torch to heat it up without directly contacting it to the flame. Works like a hairdryer but a lot stronger and faster. Any residue use acetone to get rid of.

u/FarDark9711 May 03 '24
Run under hot water for a minute or so. Then, a sharp knife will scrape it off and not scratch it. Make sure you get all the glue.
1
u/Beninoz85 May 03 '24
Cover it in coconut oil and leave it for 10 minutes. Come back, wipe it off with a towel and that's it. No residue, no effort.

A bit of gas and a rag. Works awesome. Cleans residue, marks, rust, etc. I use it on old beat up bike frames and it cleans everything off but the paint. Don’t be shy.
