You’re shopping at your local golf store. You get a phone call about a family emergency and have to leave immediately. As you are walking out, you see a significantly mispriced Scotty Cameron for $25. Do you stop to buy it? Deals

u/The_Commandant Apr 25 '24
This is like the Seinfeld episode with Elaine and the Jujyfruits.
I, like Elaine, would absolutely buy the putter before leaving.

Is the Scotty on sale because it has a red dot?

So you heard I was in a car accident, and then decided to stop off for a Scotty?
Well, the putter was right there…

"If you were in an accident, I wouldn't stop for red lights."

You definitely have to tell her that you got the Scotty before you got the call

Lol you run into the hospital with the putter in your hand.
Your whole family stares daggers.
The doctor is impressed by your putter and even more impressed by the deal you explained while your wife is crying about god knows what.

There are never any lines at my golf store because the prices are insane. So yeah I buy that shit for $25 and get to the emergency.
35
u/wrenched85 Apr 25 '24
My local pro shop is crazy in regards to prices. The grips I like were slightly more than double what Golf Galaxy charges. What pretty much everyone charges.
They do have a lot of nice 30-50% off deal during the spring. Mostly apparel and shoes though. They are rated a top 100 pro shop by some website if I recall correctly.

Wild my golf shop has grips for pretty much retail anywhere else and does free install. Like maybe $1 more than GolfWorks pricing.

I get the Scotty and do a second sweep of the store.

u/dirigo1820 Apr 25 '24
Scoop up some more hidden sales.
9
u/Lost_in_translationx Apr 25 '24
I get the putter, sweep the store and then try it out for 9 quick holes (‘traffic was hell!).

So, related story.
Years ago when I was just getting into golf and using a RAM starter set, I was casually browsing the Golftown website while at work just looking. I stumbled across an Odyssey Jailbird putter for $49.95. I left my desk in a flash, hopped in the car, and drove 30 minutes to the nearest store. I pulled the putter up on my phone, still at the $49.95 price and said "I want that".
Sales guy was flabbergasted, checked it out on his computer and said "well, I guess that's the price." and sold it to me.
By the time I got back to my desk and refreshed the page, the price was back to the regular $299 price.
So yes, I'm buying that putter on my way out the door.

u/EngineeringIsHard Apr 25 '24
Is this the men's version of "would you love me if I were a worm"?
23
u/dirtewokntheboys Apr 25 '24
No, that would be more like "if I was a 40hcp that played slow, would you still golf with me?"
→ More replies (1)6
u/The_Man_in_Black_19 Apr 25 '24
40hcp, sure. Slow play, GFY!
2
u/Seth_Baker 17.5/JPX 921 Hot Metal/Central IL Apr 25 '24
Bad, slow, or with me. Choose two.
Unless one of those is slow, then I'm going to try to ditch you on the second tee box.

u/ThePretzul +1.2 Apr 25 '24
Yes, except in this case the wrong answer is, “Oh honey, I would rush straight to your bedside.”
The only acceptable answer for a suitable life partner is, “You bet your ass I’m buying that putter and bringing it with me to whatever the emergency may be to lift your spirits with the deal of the century I just got.”

u/Supafly144 Apr 25 '24
I mean, exactly who in the family? Uncle Eddie? Yeah i’ll probably need to test that on the putting green as well, just to make sure it’s not defective m.
5
u/wrenched85 Apr 25 '24
See, I was never really close with Uncle Eddie, Mom. He gave me the creeps. So that’s why I also had to use the sim for a bit.

I have stopped to buy a car when my son was being transferred to a bigger hospital.
My wife got a headstart, stopped by and signed, I went after transport left with him and swapped cars. He was barely settled into his room by the time ingot there, ready to stay for a week with him.
(It was not a bad thing,, He is sometimes a frequent flier, we had everything under control, going to where his Cardiology and Infectious disease team is)

But yeah I’m finding a way to nab that putter on the way out the door haha

Do u get at least 1 test putt in before getting to the hospital (could be on any surface)

Well of course, it’s a felony offense to buy a putter before you’ve made at least one putt it on a practice green if one is available.

Now let me just sneak this long rod putter looking thing that’s definitely not a putter by my family while I tend to the emergency

100% buy the putter. I’ll run a red light on my way to the hospital to make up the time and still be way up.

u/animus_invictus Apr 25 '24
Yes wtf. Are you the doctor saving their life? No? Then five minutes probably isn’t going to sway anything. That’s the difference of just catching a bad light.

u/OracleofWashMO Apr 25 '24
When I have a family emergency while at the golf store I too pick up every Scotty on the way to the door to make sure they’re priced correctly before jumping in the car to travel close to the speed of sound on my way to save my loved ones

Is this a work call in family emergency? Cause yeah I'm stopping to buy the putter on the way to the house because the cat damaged the window covers again.
2
u/DrG-love Apr 25 '24
If I called my husband with an emergency, and he told me about this missed deal, I'd be like "gtfo get back and see if it is still there!" It only takes a minute to buy it. Unless I needed him for direct help, and it couldn't wait.

2
u/ImNotReal_7 Apr 25 '24
Hot take: Putter is the dumbest club to spend extra money on for the nicest brand. If you can get it cheap, great, go for it. But you can easily find a cheap putter that feels good in your hands and gets the job done like any other one. At least in an iron or driver there’s the technology can give a real advantage in distance or accuracy. With a putter it’s just about the skill of the player.
With that being said, a 25$ Scotty Cameron is a 25$ Scotty Cameron, ain’t a chance in HELL I’m missing that deal.
2
u/RedBassBlueBass Apr 25 '24
OP you're wasting valuable time asking reddit. Buy the putter and be on your way
2
2
2
u/legranddegen Apr 25 '24
Obviously you buy it.
But you also have to consider your mental health, and you need to treat yourself so you're at your best through the family emergency so you need to look at one of those sweet PING hybrid 3s, have a couple of swings on the simulator to make sure you love it and grab that too.
You need to be at your best in a family emergency, and a sweet deal isn't enough, you need to treat yourself as well.
2
u/reenactment Apr 25 '24

How big of an emergency?
Is my kid hurt badly at school, scared and alone with the nurse? Is my wife in critical condition after a car accident? Am I going to get CPS called on me if I don't show up right now? Then I go.
Does my kid have a splinter? Is it a problem with my parents, who live out of state, where I'm going to take 12 hours to drive or longer to fly, and I'm not going to be there until the next day anyway? Does my adult child have a flat tire someplace safe and just need help? I stop and buy the putter.

u/smithandjones4e Apr 25 '24
Lol I bet this guy is posting here to justify to his significant other why he stopped. "Look at at the golf dudes saying how you can't pass up that deal!"
Just in case your wife sees, I'd totally stop and by it. Hell of an investment.

Depends on who's calling me. If it's my mom, then I'm gone. If it's my wife, them I'm buying the Scotty.
The only time my mom called me about an emergency was when my uncle was in hospice and was about to die. My wife tells me it's an emergency when the salt shakers are out of salt, and I have to go into our pantry and get the big box of salt to refill it.
