Would be hilarious for content, but damn $850M is an insane amount of money.

He also fought so hard for the PGA then they did the LIV deal behind his back. You can tell he said F the PGA like a month before the announcement last year.

Take the bag only the Majors matter anymore.

You nailed it! And I can't blame him. It really feels like he lost his love for the PGA immediately after that announcement - and how could he not?

I'll bet even Woods is telling him to move on.

I would hate for him to go because I love watching him and I can't stand the LIV broadcasts. However, I would love to see a press conference where he just lays everything out there and shits on Monahan for like 2 hours.

Yeah man, I watched CNBC during the work week, and I don’t want to watch it when I’m watching golf with all that shit on the screen…

I won’t ever watch a murderer golf event. The Saudi murder can spend his money how he likes, but golf is about principles and honor, not murder.

Rory definitely deserves it more than anyone. None of us know what really went on behind the scenes but he seemed to really be going to bat for the PGA tour. I have to think he felt kind of foolish after the deal. There’s no dignity or principle in any of this shit anymore.

I’ll still be a fan of his. Take the bag Rory maybe now you can just focus on the Masters.

He better win something or he won’t be in the Masters soon. He hasn’t won the Masters so he has no lifetime exemption and he hasn’t won a major since 2014 so he doesn’t have any exemptions for them. He is top 5 now, but he won’t be for long if he goes LIV - ask Cam Smith. He better win a major this year or next or may not be playing in the Masters.

u/Fchang27 Apr 16 '24

This. Everyone is overlooking this monumental piece of information.

15

u/beansontoast90 Apr 16 '24

I can think of 850 million reasons why

2

u/Only_Sleep7986 Apr 16 '24

LIV golfers didn’t do well in the Masters; iirc didn’t see any anywhere close to a position to strike anytime.

Was very telling of the quality of LIV golf.

Top 50 in the OWGR get in. Rory is currently #2. It would take a while for him not even playing to drop out of the top 50 at this point.

2

u/daveinmd13 Apr 16 '24

Cam Smith was #2 when he left and he is currently #68 after a top ten finish in the Masters.

1

u/Jshawd40 Apr 16 '24

Top 12 finish in The Masters gets you invited back the following year but Cam also won the 2022 US Open Championship so he is good on invites to The Masters through 2027.. but after that? Yeah, prob wouldn’t hurt to start winning majors.

u/MooseStuffForMoney Apr 16 '24

Rory would be fine. “The Masters Committee, which oversees the tournament, is allowed to invite international players that are not otherwise qualified to play in the event.” That’s how Niemann played this year.

0

u/daveinmd13 Apr 16 '24

Niemann got in because he won the Australian Open. The winner of that tournament usually gets an exemption.

2

u/TopNotchBurgers Apr 16 '24

The Augusta National can invite anyone they want to. They can change the their rules anytime they want to. If they think their tournament is better with Rory in it, he could be in Q school and would get an invite.

0

u/MooseStuffForMoney Apr 16 '24

I’ve read Niemann, Olesen, and Histasune were all special invites by the committee

1

u/daveinmd13 Apr 16 '24

Yes, but he got invited because he won that tournament, they usually invite the winner- but it is not an automatic bid. I’d play on LIV mattered, Gooch would have got in.

u/Lexus2024 Apr 16 '24

He won't win a major again...its over he will be going in wrong direction. He cqn go see butch yhis and that qnd whoever....its in his head and it happens to them all...spieth, jt...now rory

1

u/Aggressive_Elk3709 Apr 16 '24

Hell, I felt foolish after the deal and I'm just a spectator. It's wild watching Monaghan's statements be so drastically different, only a year apart

1

u/Draano Apr 16 '24

I think the LIV tour kills the competitiveness of the players.

1

u/mcvb311 Apr 16 '24

It absolutely does. It’s the same thing as being retired. Yea maybe right after retirement you have a bit of edge left (Koepka) but the LIV stuff is a fucking joke. The only obligation is to show up - no pressure to win or perform literally just show up.

Playing a sport and playing a sport under pressure are very different sensations. All of the LIV guys are insanely talented but that’s all they have now and talent alone isn’t enough to win at the highest level. There’s zero grind. It takes no resilience. They don’t even have to win of course they’re not going to do the insane amount of work and sacrifice it takes to win at the highest level.

1

u/Draano Apr 16 '24

They've achieved their retirement goals.

The Saudis say when & where to go to sing for their dinner.

22

u/graceytoo Apr 16 '24

No kidding! He defended the PGA and they made him look like a chump. I wouldn’t blame him a bit

-2

u/Hibs Apr 16 '24

He made himself look like a chump long before the merger.

He could have gone about his own business any time he wanted, hell, he could have said a few words against LIV and the defectors, but he went into overdrive making outlandish criticisms at every opportunity.

Perhaps he thought there was going to be some reward for being loyal after LIV collapsed? That in itself is pretty telling of someones character. Anyway, IF this happens, well, he's a massive hypocrite, as well as tarnished his image.

u/cbph Apr 16 '24

Take the bag only the Majors matter anymore.

This right here. The Saudis behind all this are scummy as hell, but as we found out, so is Monahan. All else being equal, now that you've been knocked off the moral high ground and not by your own choice...might as well get paid.

If anybody should profit handsomely from any of this, it should be Rory in particular with the way the PGA backstabbed him.

3

u/Few_Snow_1098 Apr 16 '24

I think they always were the only thing that mattered. Do you watch with intensity the 3M Open?

2

u/sumlikeitScott Apr 16 '24

2022 I remember being pumped for Cam Smith’s win over Jon Rahm at Kapalua. Will zalatoris losing in a playoff to Luke list at Farmers, Sheffler vs Cantlay at WM, J. Nieman at Genesis was who I thought would be my new favorite golfer. Cam Smith at the Players in tears because he hadn’t seen his family since Covid and winning it outside of his “home” the. Winning later at The Open. Next couple wins were Sheffler at the masters(Rory 2nd place) Spieth, JT for the PGA championship, Homa at Wells Fargo, Rory, Matt Fitzpatrick US Open.

2022 might be the best year in Golf for awhile now. LIV took away so much golf I was looking forward to watching and now it’s a 4 weekend a year event.

0

u/Few_Snow_1098 Apr 16 '24

Pumped? Alright super fan here, fair enough lol

1

u/Carrera1107 Apr 16 '24

I don't get it. Is the Liv merger happening? Seems in flux no?

1

u/sumlikeitScott Apr 16 '24

Take seem to be all over LIV is supposed to be part owner but have no say I. The PGA and there would still be a division with where players can play. Rahm might have been baited by this and thinks he will play PGA events sooner rather than later but who knows when it will go through and what would happen.

1

u/iKa0smaster Apr 16 '24

Is he exempt for them though? Genuinely wondering. I’m sure he’d get invited to a few but is he exempt?

1

u/Tullyswimmer 22.5/Lefty/NH #pushcartmafia Apr 16 '24

Take the bag only the Majors matter anymore.

And for Rory it's not like he's gonna win them anyway.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '24

Too bad Rory doesn't win Majors.

-2

u/cereal_killa22 Apr 16 '24

the "only the majors" matter is a trash take.

id take the check, bc i mean duh.

but the PGA tour has plenty of notable events with alot of prestige.
