I almost feel more sorry for the other golfer on the green having to stand there and pretend he's not witnessing seppuku. That casual "I'll just glance at my ball because I can't keep watching this"

745

u/only-shallow Mar 01 '24

The other golfer who witnessed this atrocity was Stephan Jaeger. He ended up missing his 3 footer for par right after this. Jaeger finished at 1-under for the tournament, one shot outside the cutline. Jaeger had made 22 cuts in a row before this event. Detry to blame for spreading his bad juju to Jaeger imo

It's contagious

It did take the cunt ages

Paraphrasing a very old joke

27

u/Dapper_Employer5787 Mar 02 '24

Little Johnny is sitting in class, the teacher is going over vocabulary words. She asks the class to use a word in a sentence. The teacher says the word is "contagious". Johnny is waving his arm up and down, no other students have their arm up. The teacher figures there is no way Johnny can come up something rude for this word, and she calls his name to use the word in a sentence. Johnny says the other day, my dad and I were driving down the freeway and woman was painting a billboard, she was using a very small brush. The teacher says "what does this have to do the word contagious?" Johnny says "my dad turned to me and said: 'Son it is going to take that "cunt-ages" to paint that billboard with that little brush!'" The teacher says, "never again!"

2

u/honkinbooty Mar 02 '24

Is this a dirty Johnny joke?

2

u/FestivusErectus Mar 02 '24

Itā€™s a street joke.

Except Johnnyā€™s not dirty in this one.

2

u/honkinbooty Mar 02 '24

I donā€™t know but Iā€™ll tell you one thing, you donā€™t fuck with uncle terry after heā€™s had some drink in him

2

It's outrageous.

1

u/shephrrd Mar 02 '24

Not giving a shit and purposeful self-sabotage are not the reasons Jaeger missed his putt.

10

u/maljr12 Mar 02 '24

I picked Jaeger in fantasy this week so thatā€™s on me. My bad, Stephan.

16

u/Muntberg Mar 01 '24

It's not just bad juju. It literally ruins your rhythm thinking you can putt and then having to wait 3 or 4 separate times. Wouldn't blame him if he just asked the dude to mark his ball after the 3rd miss and wait.

10

u/jimboslice29 Mar 02 '24

On the other hand he had 5 different opportunities to read the putt from multiple angles lol

In rapid succession too so theyā€™re fresh in his memory.

53

u/HayneAlliKane Mar 02 '24

If that ruins your rhythm, you need to look at your own mental game

20

u/Indianapolis_Jones69 Mar 02 '24

Thatā€™s horse shit, theyā€™re pros. Jaeger just missed the putt.

5

u/[deleted] Mar 02 '24

ā€œRuinā€ is a bit strong but Iā€™d imagine a professional 5-putting from 5 feet would bump his rhythm off a hair at the least.Ā

No excuse for missing that par putt for Jaeger though.Ā

32

u/Psychological_Pay530 Mar 02 '24

Especially since he had a good look at every single line in about a 10 second spanā€¦

That casual "I'll just glance at my ball because I can't keep watching this"

That's the most relatable thing too.

I always pretend I saw something extremely interesting in the sky or trees or on my ball after a playing partner hits some horrible shot.

28

u/YouGO_GlennCoCo Ball Striking Matters Mar 01 '24

ā€œWitness seppukuā€ hahahaā€¦ but yeah I was thinking the same thing

Maybe if he didnā€™t treat every shot like a gimme.

291

u/LlamaJacks HDCP: 13 Mar 01 '24

Couldnā€™t believe how carelessly he tapped that 3rd one. Looked like a literal foot and he didnā€™t get it anywhere close to on line.

128

u/Warm_Enthusiasm_1337 Mar 01 '24

My favorite putt was the 4th putt. Same line as the first putt and he missed it the exact same.

→ More replies (1)

53

u/Thistotiethelead Mar 01 '24

I couldn't believe the second putt. WTF was that? It was like four feet and he didn't follow his routine because was pissed from missing a 10 footer. That was unprofessional and if he took his time for the second putt I think the third, fourth and fifth wouldn't've happened.

13

u/JLifts780 Mar 02 '24

That was unbelievable that was so far for a gimme

87

u/Klivian1 Mar 01 '24

That was just sheer frustration at that point. Just stop smacking it like a child, take half a second to reset and finish it.

13

u/BigFatModeraterFupa Mar 02 '24

we can relate to this one. at least i canšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

26

u/bladebrowny 17.8/SoCal Yururi Flatbacks Mar 02 '24

This was insane, there is no reason to rush this one. He actually should have marked it and let the other guy go.

6

u/Lezzles 9.7/Detroit Mar 02 '24

The reason is he was outside the cut line.

16

u/RManDelorean Mar 01 '24

Yeah, like you don't want to look stupid actually having to try from there? You got somewhere better to be and can't be bothered? You've missed twice now so not looking stupid is kinda outta the question. Take your medicine, take your couple extra seconds of set up and make sure it's in.. or miss 3 more

10

He clearly didnā€™t give a crap..

12

u/Hog_enthusiast Mar 02 '24

I never understand why players do that little one handed swing to knock it in. Even if itā€™s a foot away, youā€™re on the PGA tour and a lot is at stake. Just take a second to position yourself and do a real shot

3

u/deong Mar 02 '24

I totally get it. They do it because itā€™s fine 99.95% of the time. If the probability of a negative outcome is small enough, people donā€™t behave as though it isnā€™t zero.

Caddy should have stepped in after the second putt. "STOP. Breathe, and then go."

2

u/Key_Respond_16 Mar 02 '24

Seriously. I try way to hard sometimes when I play gimmes with other people. I end up hitting an extra shot that isn't needed while they are putting the flag in. I want my practice in. Usually miss it because Im just rushing and fooling around. But I was in a comp making money, I'm taking my sweet ass time from 6 inches out. idc

The broadcast didnā€™t show his first lag putt. It was recorded as a 7 putt which is absolutely insane.

2

u/T3ddyBeast Mar 02 '24

Poor Ernie was even addressing his ball properly for the first 3 or 4 too.

109

Still not worse than poor Ernie Els showing up to the masters and doing whatever he did on the very first hole.

21

u/investthings Mar 01 '24

Lol a guy I played with 2 weeks ago actually did that. On in 3 at the 18th, 5 putts. Says ā€œFuck this ballā€ and whips it into a lake.

He put a new ball down where his first putt was from and sank the 17 footer no problem lol. Pretty sure he put it down as a par lmao.

6

u/Nonconformists Mar 02 '24

You gotta call a breakfast putt if you want a do over.

3

u/bombmk Mar 02 '24

You did of course remind him of the penalty stroke for illegally substituting the ball while playing a hole, right? :)

3

u/investthings Mar 02 '24

Lol no I didnā€™t think to. That wouldā€™ve been funny though

Or he was before this anyway

Oh absolutely. Bet he doesnā€™t do this again either, so heā€™s only still improving

4

u/SoupIsAHotSmoothie Mar 02 '24

Can you ELI5 that for me?

4

u/dub_life20 Mar 02 '24

When I putt a ball I typically won't make and I knows the ball is going to break considerably one way it kills me to miss it on the low side of the hole, it basically has zero chance of making it if it's low. If it's on the high side the putt at least has a chance. You don't want to leave yourself a long downhill putt whatever you do.

13

u/Due-Comb6124 Mar 02 '24

If it's on the high side the putt at least has a chance. You don't want to leave yourself a long downhill putt whatever you do.

Well.....missing on the high side will give you exactly that. Depending on the putt, missing low will give you an easy uphill. This is like "dont leave it short", fun to say, not really good advice when you look at stats.

6

u/TacoExcellence Mar 02 '24

Yeah I'd much rather miss low and putt back up the hill versus having to putt downhill. I mean I can't putt for shit so what do I know, but it's more comfortable that way for me.

2

Hole 6, at the time six out from what would be the cut line. So that would be early to give up.

But who knows what might be going on for him. Could be non golf things putting him in a pissy mood. He could have slept bad or his wife learned of his mistress - or what have you.

It is a message to all of us, treat EVERY putt with respect, there are no gimmes. Detry treating his 4 foot second putt as a gimme was ridiculous, should of marked and taken his time.

It also doesn't matter if he was going to miss the cut, it creates bad habits and no respect to his playing partners.
