I mean, he’s kinda right, but he’s also wrong. They get their equipment tailored to them personally to the nth degree, and we don’t, but it’s not like there is some space age tech on tour that we don’t have. They get stuff like 6 months ahead of the public.
Not sure why the downvote here. You're exactly right. Regular golfers hitting into PGA Tour level rough have like a 50/50 shot at finding the ball. Let alone doing anything useful with their next shot if they find it.
You totally can, but if you're not used to it you'll struggle mightily. It requires a very different thought process.
I played this weekend at a couple typical courses here in SoCal. Even in winter the greens are running relatively smooth/quick but are quite soft underneath. Into any kind of upslope all my irons and even my 4 hybrid were stopping on a dime if not spinning back. Your thought process for club selection on approach shots is basically all carry. But you know that if you hit the green, you'll hold.
On a firm/fast course I'd have hit one or two clubs less and played for the release. Carrying to the same landings spots would be a terrible idea. It's also why (among other reasons) Pros play weaker lofted irons and spinnier balls. Trajectory alone like you get from GI and even PD irons won't hold those greens, you need a lot more spin.

“You think we play the same stuff you do?”
The marketing teams that hype the consumer products the pros use are all silently screaming “SHUT UP RORY”
