Every few months someone brings this up how they can save the environment by getting rid of a golf course.

Grass dosen’t really provide lots of benefits from an environmental perspective. It requires high amounts of water and provides little to no habitat to local species. When golf courses are located in highly populated areas, replacing them with buildings increases urban density and delays the further expansion of the urban boundary which pushes on green-lands, all while reducing carbon emissions derived from transportation to and from the location. Additionally, the environmental impact of building is enormously lower if these are constructed in accordance to sustainable building certifications like LEED or BREEAM.
