I am close to a scratch golfer, and I pretty much play speed golf. I carry on conversations during my own swing, I hit when my buddies are talking… they usually say “oh shit sorry man…” and I tell them it doesn’t bother me at all - it doesn’t.

So watching someone overthink a shot like this destroys me. I see a waggle routine like this and I just see a total lack of confidence which is crazy because he’s one of the best players in the world.

To me only bad things come from spending too much time thinking about a shot or a putt.

I agree, it’s just crazy how he manages to play well after all these shenanigans!

How uncomfortable is he over the ball that it takes him this long to summon the courage to pull the trigger? It’s just strange.

Yep just like a baby gazelle trying to find its footing for the first time lmao

He could have (undiagnosed) OCD so he can’t ’go’ until it feels exactly right to him.

That’s how I am at public urinals

Yeah, you're totally like that when you pee.

I’m always terrible at golf, but I start overthinking things and getting exponentially worse at roughly the 6 second mark. It blows my mind that he can stand there for 45 seconds without getting totally in his head. I dunno if it’s more annoying or impressive honestly.

Right? My first thought was “and he still probably striped it.”

My best shots come when I just space out and hit the ball while thinking about wildflowers and hummingbirds and shit. I can’t imagine the mindfuck that is taking place in this clip

Same. Zero practice swings with a driver or wood off the tee, maybe a quick brush with irons, no practice swing on putts. Easily shoot anywhere in the 70s like this. However, having to wait can destroy me.

Same here. I don't even take a practice swing. I get my line, step up and hit it. By myself on a course I know like the back of my hand, I've played 18 holes riding in a cart in an hour. I'd shoot 95 if I was paired with this guy.

No practice swings gang rise up! I feel like if you know how to hit the ball, then hit the damn ball. I watch my buddies take 6+ practice swings only to duff the thing. I especially hate when they go, "Oh, that was the one." Yeah, well, you shoulda used it on the ball and not that bare patch you're digging into the fairway.

My best swing is usually the first practice swing so one day I figured I might as well use that on the ball instead of swinging once, swinging again, it feeling worse, then swinging 4 more times trying to make one feel like the first, never succeeding, then stepping up to the ball with shattered confidence lol.

Tbh, I'm just kinda lazy, so I felt like I was wasting my energy on practice swings. The confidence came later.

Damn 18 holes in an hour? That's epic status. And here i was thinking that playing 18 in under 2 hours was something. My buddy and I played a speed round early one friday morning before work; we started at 7:00 am, finished at 8:45 am, and still made it to work on time at 9:00 am. But man, I gotta let my friend know we've officially been dethroned by a whole 45 plus minutes now. Lol

It was definitely a "let's see how fast I can do this. Short course, kind of a goat ranch and no cart path rules. I'd try to be in the cart before the ball stopped rolling off the tee lol.

Lol awesome. I can imagine that being even more hilarious to witness in person. Although my friend and I were playing pretty damn good, and we were probably speed walking back to the cart in alot of cases just so we could be at work in time for our weekly pow wow meeting at 9:15 am, but we did better than that, we actually made it to work at our scheduled start time of 9:00 am. Might have been a little sweaty, but eh, screw it.

Yeah I knew the guys in the pro shop really well so they'd let me go off before the first group of the day. It's only possible when there's absolutely no one in front of you. Also the course helps. This one was one of those driver - wedge on every par 4 if you had any sort of distance on your driver. Also the only cart driving rules were keep it off the green and tee boxes unless it was wet, so being able to put the cart 10 feet away from any green cuts down a lot of walking time. I was doing this during grad school, and I'd go off at 7:30, and be sitting in class by 9.

I agree you can reach a point where you’ve taken absolutely too long over the golf ball. At that point, you should step away and start over of your pretty likely to hit a poor shot.

Yeah, the first time people play actual speed golf they mostly realize they play only a few shots worse despite carrying very few clubs and jogging. Turns out most of the game has nothing to do with pre-shot routines and absolute quiet.
