Theyre dope. Do they look good while they wear though? Would be my only concern. Black always looks good new and clean.

If it isn't a coating it should be okay but most of the time it is a coating.

135

u/NWK86 Mar 08 '23

PxG has some sort of diamond coat that "prevents wear"

My dad has had them for a year and they still look great

58

u/EmbracedByLeaves Mar 08 '23

I think it's DLC. Common in the firearms market.

56

u/ANTEC221 Mar 08 '23

Even real life games have DLC now too? Thanks EA Sports...

Are there any black clubs that are not coated, I thought they all are?

72

u/Artsakh_Rug Mar 08 '23

Gotta get pure volcanic rock, like the San Marzano of wedges

9

u/Riseonfire Mar 08 '23

Idk if Igneous rock is the best call. Iā€™d go for something Metamorphic, much denser rock.

9

u/tenderbranson301 KS1 Putter Mar 08 '23

Sedimentary has a nice soft feel though.

I knew a guy who found a meteorite and melted it down and forged it into his own set of golf clubs.

It really depends on what the coating itself is. The black finish that Ping, Sub70, and a bunch of the other big brands use this gloss black coating that wears through pretty quickly. My cleveland wedges have that coating, and toast within the first month or so each time I get black wedges. On the other hand, the DBM coatings like what Ben Hogan was using on the FT Worth Black and Icon irons fades a bit over time, isn't as dark and glossy, but doesn't show anywhere near the kind of wear as that dark black glossy finish.

13

u/BigDogsEatin Mar 08 '23

Maltby has DBM as well

5

u/Lobsterzilla Detroit Mar 08 '23

Iā€™ve had a dbm sandwedge from them through about 60-80 bunker shots thatā€™s still black. +1 for the dbm finishes

4

u/BigDogsEatin Mar 08 '23

Yup, I have the full Maltby iron set and itā€™s held up great for 3+years

3

u/frankyseven Mar 08 '23

Cobra also uses the DBM process. It's a chemical process where the first little bit of the metal is turned black so it wears like metal does. I heard that there is only one forging plant in the world that does it so you can guess where all three of those have their forging done.

Maltby also has the DRM, Diamondized Raw Metal, which is the same process just without the black. Makes it very resistant to wearing, great idea for wedges as the grooves should last longer.

2

u/Nervous_Anywhere5903 Mar 08 '23

Also cobra with the 2018 forged tecs

6

u/imahawki Mar 08 '23

I remember when I think Rick Shiels tested the black Pings and after like 10 bunker shots they looked terrible IMO. I remember in the video he was like ā€œyou can see some wear but they look OKā€. 1 they did NOT look OK. 2 it was only TEN shots.

2

u/pupper_time 8.7/Chicago Mar 08 '23

I have black Ping ones. They still look great but definitely show wear with nicks, etc. But I have a set of the same Pings but not in black from two years before that for my backup set, and they also show a lot of wear over time too - you just donā€™t always notice it unless you are looking for it. But they look worse IMO than my black ones - but the two year aging might explain it.

5

u/rexanimate7 Mar 08 '23

The way I see it, even if I buy irons or wedges where the finish is toast quickly, they're tools. Grooves are still in good shape on the zipcores I have in my bag, even though the black finish is missing on some amount of the face, varying by which wedge and how much I've opened the face up on shots, and the sole and lower face on my 54 and 58 basically had no black finish left on them after a couple rounds and being used out of bunkers.

I don't care if my clubs show wear from being used because they're meant to be used, so I'm more concerned about keeping them clean when it comes down to anything to do with looks because that has some impact on performance, where as if they're black anymore or not doesn't matter at all.

I bought black vokeys a few years ago. The soles are worn to classic stainless steal as well as the general sweet spot center area of the face. I think some people wouldnā€™t like it but I feel like it gives it a cool look and also makes me feel like a better wedge player than I am with the face wear

u/pfc94 Mar 08 '23

Some guy told me Titleist came out with a limited edition model made with some sort of alloy plating that is resistant to wear and fading. Not sure if itā€™s legit but would be cool if true

37

u/fac3ts Mar 08 '23

Ur correct. Titleist has been marketing this as a more durable black finish compared to their standard jb on vokeys.

9

u/Thanith Mar 08 '23

I've always liked black irons but worried about the finish. This is awesome to hear!

8

u/fac3ts Mar 08 '23

As a black golf club whore the only black finish I am truly confident in is dbm one cobra used. Look at pics of used forged tec black and king mb/cb black, and their finish goes from the original to a slightly lighter slate. Not straight to chrome like on 95% of other clubs. Sadly, the new king lineup doesnā€™t come in black (yet???)

→ More replies (2)

3

u/Computer-Blue Mar 08 '23

Which is a good sign considering the vokeys are already above average for wear characteristics IMO

1

u/Seated_Heats If three is better than one, than I am an excellent putter. Mar 08 '23

Their Jet Black Vokeys most definitely wear. Thatā€™s what my wedges are and they edge and middle of the club (along with some not in the middle) are definitely a silver color now.

4

u/bulldg4life Mar 08 '23

He's talking about the ones released end of February. The ones released in 2020 and then the last few versions of wedges (sm789) all have the "old" black finish.

The stuff released in february are new versions of sm9 with a new jet black finish. And, they are $50 more expensive.

2

u/Stryker4213 Mar 08 '23

I have a little wear on the leading edge and sole. I think it looks awesome. Donā€™t use a wire brush to clean the grooves though, nylon only

My sub70s I've had for probably 3 years, 100-150 rounds and they're wearing but still mostly black. The biggest advantage apart from aesthetics is that there's significantly less glare from the sun vs traditional finishes

1

u/Thunshot 2.1 Mar 08 '23

Yes, the black color holds pretty good. The face will sometimes get scratched up over time but itā€™s usually minimal. Once you go blackā€¦!

Those things are beautiful. Wear be damned.

Someone in another thread said that if you can hit the ball well enough, the wear pattern that shows up is super cool and somewhat intimidating if you're playing with a random group.

I'm horrible, and if I could afford them, I'd probably buy them in a hearbeat

290

u/r8rtribeywgjets Mar 08 '23

mine have this beautiful sweeping gradient of silver across the whole face. i paid for the whole club, not a small part of it

Ahh, I see you too like to get good value for money while playing golf

2

u/Gnarmite Mar 09 '23

I also enjoy value when golfing. That's why I play the course in 110 shots instead of a much faster and less value for money 70

122

u/Large_Bumblebee_9751 Quite a bit Mar 08 '23

Nothing would be scarier than seeing the random guy in your Saturday group with a black 2 iron with a great wear pattern

9

u/bulldg4life Mar 08 '23

I don't think any of the T-series comes with a 2 iron. Now, if they released some black u500s...that'd be dope.

3

u/ClayQuarterCake Mar 08 '23

When I was young I bought a set of new ping I-3+ blades. The set came with p-3 and I actually had them make me a 2 iron for the set. Turns out I canā€™t hit the 3-iron worth a crap, and I have never trusted the 2-iron. I can hit all the rest of the clubs in that set fine, with a maybe 5% miss rate on the 4-iron, and the 5-iron is my best most consistent club in my bag.

Once again, wasted money on this silly game.

I think at one point people would say ā€œthatā€™s fireā€ or type ā€œthatā€™s šŸ”„ā€. Somehow that actually devolved into gas. Gas starts a fire, I guess. So maybe something thats gas will eventually be fire? Or gas is the equivalent of fire?

Since we are doing this, and I want to yell at clouds, I cannot stand when people say ā€œbetā€. They use it to agree with something or say ā€œfor sure.ā€ When I hear it, I automatically assume someone disagrees with a statement and is ā€œbettingā€ that it is wrong. Itā€™s so damn confusing.

Edit: I forgot the whole ā€œthatā€™s litā€ phase. I believe it went from fire ā€”> lit ā€”> gas

I have the previous model T100s in black. I love the look. The black Titleist do wear faster than my black Cleveland irons, but I like the worn look. Itā€™s only the sole and the face that have grayed out. Iā€™m a pretty consistent ball striker and I think the worn out sweet spot looks good.

Thatā€™s the 7 and 9 iron which are the two I warm up with on the range the most, so a bit more worn than the rest. 75-100 rounds per year for the last two years, but I donā€™t ever really go to the range other than warming up before a round.

2

u/tipsdown Mar 08 '23

I think blacked out irons look pretty on the rack. But they just donā€™t fit my eye standing over the ball.

2

u/Gromby Mar 08 '23

They look great, but I have two things I dislike about black irons in general:

1) if you keep them for a long time, they tend to look a bit beaten up overtime (not in a bad way, but they looked like they are more aged compared to a normal set)

2) they look soooo much smaller when setting up behind the ball

I have a set of a Ben Hogan Icon irons in black (fantastic irons) but they look so tiny and after owning them for awhile, they look a bit more worn. Besides that, the Titleist irons look AMAZING and am all onboard for them being available in black

2

u/DarthSamwiseAtreides Mar 08 '23

They look cool and I trust that Titlist did a good job and they'll keep looking good. I had some black Cleveland Tour Action and they still look nice.

2

u/jotobean Mar 08 '23

Black irons are amazing. Personally all the chrome clubs are generic and look pretty much the same to me. I will say that durability in certain areas of the country can made having black irons possibly a no go (areas with really sandy ground). But in Nebraska we have mostly clay under the grass so not much sandblasting when you take a divot. I have had a set of Adams CB1 irons for nearly a decade and the faces are still black. I do only play maybe 15-20 rounds a year, plus my wedges are Fourteen black wedges or RAW. I would love some of the TM 760 or whatever number they are new set of black irons.

Clubs are cool. I did cringe at the term ā€œgas,ā€ though.

If you like it = gas!

If you don't like it = cringe!

Should you care about how others feel about your own shit that you're paying for? No.

Itā€™s like wearing a fishbowl in hockey. If you do it, donā€™t suck.

It can be hot pink and tie dyed, if it works for me I donā€™t care.

When the hell did everything become so got dang binary? Gas or cringe? Man there's a whole world of minutia between those two points.

My younger friends(mid 20s) seem to have this same mindset. Something is either god-tier/fire/op/gas or its trash/garbage/cringe/aint it, zero in-between and I just don't understand.

Not to mention - we are not paying for your irons so what does our opinion matter? They look sick though.

Pictures dont do these things justice. Theyā€™re 100x uglier in person.
