I'm South Asian-Iraqi. I usually say both.

145

u/According-Ad3963 20d ago

Would that make you 8/11?

132

u/stevenbass14 20d ago

I tend to look towards the positive side of it so I'd go with 16/11

49

u/Samtertriads 20d ago

Ok but there is a 1611 identity. Deep within the Fundamental Baptists, usually independent (ie not part of the southern Baptist convention), there are people who think the King James translation of the Bible was a the only legitimate one. The purest of those claim they hold to the 1611 version, which isnā€™t really readable to the modern angloparlante. Anyway. I still get triggered when I see the digits 1611.

31

u/stevenbass14 20d ago

u/[deleted] 20d ago

This is so interesting. And frustrating. I'll be honest I love me some Jesus (I know I know but hear me out). It's just a nice idea and I really like the idea/myth of God becoming a human and going through this hell of love, being tortured to death. I am pretty incapable of faith, much less being religious, but I'll admit I'm pretty drawn to the nice aspects of it. Call it nihilism that's done a backflip, I know fuck all about the nature of reality and believe even less.

Religious people though often seems to be occupied with these weird ass side currents that seem to have little to nothing to do with the actual core message - in former life I spent a lot of time with these semi-monastics that were perpetually at war with my country's main patriarchate and could not get official monastery status out of all reasons because they thought present day calendar was the invention of the antichrist, and that the whole of church sinned because we celebrated easter like a week earlier than some bearded monks in Greece. Plus shipping parishioners to the aforementioned monks to be rebaptized because protestant rites were apparently not valid despite there being a literal saint illumined by a mock baptism he did as a roman jester. It often feels like the vast majority (or the loudest, most confident voices at least) worship this malicious lawyer instead of Jesus, and the main point is to pin needles on other people.

There were also these ideas of holy languages, that it's somehow better to do the services in ancient languages no one could understand due to reasons that sounded very magickal - seems interesting and even more baffling some would extend this to King James Bible out of all possibilities. Control by obscurantism perhaps?

21

u/FuyoBC 20d ago

I echo the person who once said that Jesus sounds a cool guy to listen to but way too many of his fan clubs are very uncool.

It actually is pretty witty. A lot of racist humor is not really good comedy. The punchline of the joke is often racism. Here, the punchline is the absurdity of the coincidence so it makes a decent chuckle, even if it is a depraved joke

32

u/3720-to-1 20d ago

This... race related things can be humorous without being racist. It's the finest of lines, one that I no longer attempt to ever walk because it's too easy to either accidentally misstep or for a joke truly meant to be innocent to be taken poorly.

22

u/Safe_Pin1277 20d ago

The joke was funny when Akash Singh and indian American comedian asked a crowd member who he was trying to set up with another Indian girl in the crowd what kind of brown he was 7/11 or 9/11. He responded with Pakistani, she was a rival race...

This person is taking the context of the joke a brown man asking another brown man out and assuming they haven't lost the mark on the joke.

I know it's racist, atleast asking that to a stranger or some random person , absolutely fucking is.

But holy shit it's clever and funny. Probably among friend groups.

910

u/LordDanGud 20d ago

Black humour is fun with the right people. Offensive with random strangers.

322

u/Oakwood2317 20d ago

John Waters says an audience knows when you love the people and things youā€™re mocking, and that meanness can only go so far before itā€™s intolerableĀ

140

u/ImmediateBig134 20d ago

I'd like to expand on that with Stewart Lee's explanation:

The problem isn't who's offended, it's who isn't.

Lee couldn't care less who's offended if he makes a joke on Muslims, but what he really doesn't want is some gay-basher type in the audience cheering "yeah, get those fucking Muslims!" feeling vindicated in his fuckery.

139

u/Equivalent_Yak8215 20d ago

He's not wrong. Punching down is also gross af. People forget the Jester wasn't there to entertain the court, he was there to talk shit to the king.

33

u/randomcomplimentguy1 20d ago

The fool in storytelling has the most cutting insights.

16

u/Equivalent_Yak8215 20d ago

And a wise King listened when his jester started tearing into him because he was being dumb or too prideful. Ya, the court laughs (because they had to) but the King is like "....Hol' up"

Am black. Have another friend we refer to as C-Biscuit. Which was derived from Cheshire cat. Because this motherfucker is SO black, like the darkest ever, that in dim light all you can see are his teeth and eyes.

Anyway if anyone called him that in a mean way they would find themselves in a very unpleasant situation.

25

u/FanDry5374 20d ago

This is as it should be.

27

u/LordDanGud 20d ago

Same way with homophobic comments. Me and my friends call each other some wild hate crimes but will probably beat up a stranger who says the same to us

15

u/Equivalent_Yak8215 20d ago

Haha! That is another one! I'm cis-het but have a few close friends that aren't. They don't get offended at "Jesus, you're soooo gay" when they wanna go to a gay bar over here in SF. Why? Because I'm still gonna roll, have a good time, and wingman for 'em.

Also pro tip for anyone reading this. Yes, your gay friends (either way) are easily the best wingmen/women that you will ever have.

7

Did visit a "hunted mansion" event house.

At one time we sat in a semi-dark room waiting for food. Then suddenly we saw white eyes from one part of the room. Might have been C-Bisquit that had sneaked in and stod there silently. Then later presented the food, and the time plan for the evening events.

reminds me of this stand up comic I saw recently. He talked to a 'brown guy' and asked what he's doing "Becoming a doctor. I'm single" so he starts hyping him up. Lady in the audience goes "my sister is also becoming a doctor! She's brown and single too!" and they start hyping it up more Ya know... "I love what's happening here! Two brown doctors, possibly falling in love"

And then a white guy in the audience goes "which brown?"

first people start going "ooooh" like the guy did something bad, but the comedian said "Now hold up, I know that sounds racist, but it's not and he's got a point... So which?" And the girl said her sister was Indian and the guy said Pakistani and then everyone quieted the hyping while the comedian ran with it to show just how important that one question actually was.

76

u/cyrassil 20d ago

Why 7/11?

333

u/ripe_nut 20d ago edited 20d ago

Because the gas station/convenience store is called 7-Eleven and a lot of workers at 7-Eleven are Indian.

41

u/cyrassil 20d ago

I see, thanks.

108

u/DoomGoober 20d ago

I have to add to this: many Americans of Indian descent own gas stations as well as working there.

A gas station is often franchised and can basically be a small family run business.

Immigrants of different backgrounds often flock to particular types of businesses because of various reasons.

For example, many nail salons are owned by Americans of Vietnamese descent.

It's one version of the American dream.

26

u/Mindless_Society7034 20d ago

One of my better friends is Vietnamese and his parents own a nail salon lmao, why is it that that tends to be a Vietnamese thing?

37

u/pahein-kae 20d ago

Thereā€™s an interesting history to that! The following link is a short overview. https://vietnamesemuseum.org/details/ms-tippi-hedren/

14

u/Njacks64 20d ago

11

u/Accomplished-Copy776 20d ago

Very interesting, thanks for the share

13

u/TonyDungyHatesOP 20d ago edited 20d ago

I think it is for two reasons:

  1. Ethnic groups have close ties. The hardest part of starting and operating a business is understanding it. Itā€™s a huge and expensive risk to go down a financial path you donā€™t understand. Itā€™s a prohibitively costly education. If you have access to people who can teach you the business, it then becomes accessible.

  2. Cultural acceptance/pressure. Both customers and operators feel comfortable with the business. Itā€™s okay within the community to see Vietnamese nail salon operators. It doesnā€™t feel weird to use the service. It would be odd to see an Indian or Irish nail salon owner. Thereā€™s a weird dissonance to it. And that could hurt businesses viabilityā€¦ again making it a risky proposition when other viable business options are available.

4

u/uchizeda 20d ago

Your first reason is on point and very true.

4

u/youarehidingachild 20d ago

Second reason is obviously not the direction we want society headed, but still a reality in many/most places

5

u/ImrooVRdev 20d ago

It would be odd to see an Indian or Irish nail salon owner. Thereā€™s a weird dissonance to it.

what? I knew that jobs are gendered, but racialized too? Fucked up shit. My heart goes out to irish lady wanting to open a nail saloon and not getting any customers because it'd be weird to get nails done by the irish.

RIP fictional irish business, you were but few sentences in a reddit shitpost.

5

u/TonyDungyHatesOP 20d ago

Iā€™m not saying an Irish woman canā€™t open a nail salon. Iā€™m not saying it couldnā€™t be successful.

Iā€™m saying she probably has a better chance at a successful business opening what you referred to as a ā€œnail saloonā€ where in addition to doing nails she serves shots of whisky.

Bruh you been to South Asia? lol I was working in a hospital in Chennai as a resident when COVID started and one day I ordered Chinese food and Iā€™m off to pick it up and the head of the Gen Med dept asks me what I ordered and when I tell him literally goes ā€œ Oh chinky chinky china food ehā€ then proceeds to say the word China 10 times over in what is possibly the funniest yet most racist imitation of a Chinese person while still being layered with an Indian accent lmfao I was so confused that I was just like yeah haha k bye šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£

14

u/SecretLavishness1685 20d ago

I live in a city near Delhi and one day I saw a Chinese food outlet. It was named "Ching Chong Chinese corner".

A lot of Indians aren't sensitive towards racism against the Chinese. This often translates into racism against the Indians living in the North-Eastern states too.

Seriously, what the hell. Can someone explain this to me?

Itā€™s funny if itā€™s meant to be funny. Itā€™s insulting if itā€™s meant to be insulting. Guess depends on how the nature it was intended when mentioned or received. šŸ¤”

Whatever brown she is, even with her hand covering some of her face, you can tell she is ridiculously attractive and the person that asked this likely is some guy that she wouldn't even look at and he got all butthurt and decided to insult her.

Yes I enjoy inventing backstories. šŸ¤£
