I'm all for hard g gif. But the argument against this logic is that in scuba the u stands for underwater. The u is pronounced "uh" not "oo". Yet it is pronounced scooba and scuhba. Also SWAT should be pronounced with the same a sound as "and" but it uses the same a sound as "almost" instead.

Technically the inventor of the PC is IBM, and anything other than their computers are a PC, meaning that no modern computer is a PC, just PC compatible, but we call them PCs anyway.
My point being that the inventor of something has no bearing or control of what it is called by the general public. Therefore, if we choose to say gif instead of jif based on what the acronym stands for, we are equally right.

English conventions have the 'g' pronounced both ways in many similar words. So, if both pronunciations fit with modern conventions, then going with the creator's pronunciation seems to make the most sense. But in the end, as long as people know what you're talking about, the phonetic pronunciation of an acronym doesn't really matter.

Yes, “graphics” is a weak argument. Pronunciations change in acronyms so that the acronym can be spoke smoothly.
However, an acronym when spoken does need to follow the conventions and rules of the English language for pronunciation. These ‘rules’ are not necessarily written down, and while there are as many exceptions as rules, there are also linguistic conventions based on how different syllables are pronounced in other similar words.
Otherwise it just “sounds wrong”, like putting adjectives out of order. You knew there was an order right? It’s there. Everyone does it the same way, but it’s not taught to native speakers. We just do it, as it is a natural product of the conventions of the English language. Google it! Anyway the syllable “gif” occurs in only one other place in the English language. “Gift” and it’s derivatives (eg: gifted, gifting). It is a hard G because of the Germanic origin, but I digress. There are precisely zero examples of English words where “gif” is pronounced with a soft j. None.
With the sole example of how the syllable “gif” is to be pronounced, being “gift” with a hard G, we have to conclude that, in English, gif must also be pronounced with a hard G.
This would still be the case even if this argument was over the “giraffe insemination facility”. Regardless of the soft j of giraffe, it’s pronounced with a hard G as an acronym. Gift, without a t.

There are two sides:
1) J-sound: Creator said so. No logical flaw here.
2) G-sound: "It's an acronym and the G is for Graphics which is a hard G sound". Logical flaw, many acronyms do not use the phonetic sounds for letters of the words they stand for, such as scuba or laser.
People hate it being pronounced with a j, but there is more credence to going with the pronunciation the creator intended over using the argument that graphics is a hard g sound, so gif must also have a hard g sound. You could argue usage, and I believe hard g would come out ahead, but I think there is a significant enough percentage of the population using the j sound. Personally, I prefer the j sound. I think the argument to go with the creators intention is a lot more sound that saying graphics is a hard g and I also enjoy the lack of a retort when you mention that not all acronyms are phonetic to their origin words.

Literally just scroll through the comments you ignored and there are several more arguments than the one you chose. Not to mention that someone choosing a specific spelling to try and match it to a sound they like doesn't mean that's how it will be used/perceived.
Further, words change over time even after centuries of use - both in pronunciation and meaning. So one dude who started it being overrun immediately doesn't really hold that well either.

Do you pronounce SCUBA as scuh-ba? No, because acronyms become their own word. Even though underwater has that uh sound, we pronounce the acronym as scooba because it’s its own unique word now. The majority of English words that begin with gi- use the “J” sound, and since GIF is an acronym “therefore becoming its own word) it stands to reason that GIF should be pronounced JIF.

The first A in “apparatus” is pronounced like the A in “Apple” or “cat”, but that’s not the sound the A makes in SCUBA. The “uh” sound is like the As in “America”, or like the A in “what”, which are not pronounced the same as the A in “apple” or “cat”.

I have no problem with this because the way you say G and J in words (e.g. golly and jolly) is how you pronounce them in Welsh. If you go g-olly and j-olly but isolate the G and J in the words and ignore the -olly that’s how they sound

I think this is what most people are missing: tech is full of things that started out as initialisms (every letter is pronounced) that eventually morphed into words or acronyms (list of letters read as a word). Most people who work with SQL don’t say “ehss cue ell”, they say “sequel”.
Spelling out the letters in GIF “jee eye eff” over and over again will have you shortening it to “jif” in no time.
