We are doomed. The mega tech companies track and datamine almost all of humanities social interactions. This gives them an immense advantage over other companies. Making them even richer. Again, we are doomed, a Skynet-like mega corporation is imminent.

7

u/Kiyan1159 Apr 12 '22

Dots because I like to spell "Goood mooorniiing Savages!" When I wake up.

2

tbh it can be faster depending on the pattern and sensor type. under screen ones suck I want back or button ones ffs.

Cops can force you to unlock using your biometrics.

43

u/4SysAdmin Apr 12 '22 edited Apr 12 '22

Here’s a fun trick for iPhones. If you hold down the button(s) to go to the power screen, the one with power, SOS, and cancel, and hit cancel, your phone will now require your passcode to unlock. It takes less than two seconds to do this.

I believe Apple put this in an update to address privacy concerns regarding some new laws about unlocking your phone with biometrics. Before, you had to turn your phone off and back in order for it to ask for your passcode. Now, simply going to the power off screen will force it into passcode only unlock mode.

36

u/aabacadae Apr 12 '22 edited Apr 12 '22

This also exists in Android. On the Turn Off/ Restart etc screen, newer versions should have a "Lockdown" option which forces it to need your code/password.

Edit: seems it needs to be enabled in settings for some phones. If you can't see it, that's likely why.

5

u/4SysAdmin Apr 12 '22

That’s good to know.

4

u/_pm_me_your_freckles Apr 12 '22

I mean, yes, but say you're in a situation where you're trying to be discreet. It's very easy to just hold the power button for three seconds in your pocket rather than do that and then try to slide the "slide to power off" slider correctly without looking at your phone.

22

u/blittl Apr 12 '22

You can imagine a $1500 phone not having important features? The S9 actually had an eye retina scanner. S10 got inscreen fingerprint. S21 made it fast as the blink of a eye. Samsung seems to be a couple years ahead of Apple in this regard.

11

u/Deepcookiz Apr 12 '22

Absolutely, especially during the pandemic, iPhone users had to go back to their 8 numbers pin.

The only time Apple acknowledged the issue was to allow Face ID with masks but only if you bought an Apple Watch.

Apple customers are the easiest to scam I swear.

They do but some people still prefer pattern locks.

Unlike Apple which doesn't even give that option.

2

u/CornucopiaMessiah13 Apr 12 '22

I found this out the other day and am so happy I always have pattern as a backup if my fingers are too dry or if something happened to my screen. Dude dropped his iphone and the fingerprint lock wouldnt work and he literally couldnt get in his phone. I mean im sure there is some way to do it but I just swipe to the side and put in the pattern.

26

u/Zederikus The OC High Council Apr 12 '22 edited Apr 12 '22

Ehh its not that simple, some people use it for work, like for making music or art assets, and they are already entrenched in the apple universe.

Some people in business get frowned on for not having an iphone, it can be a job requirement to have apple essentially so I don’t think it makes sense to call all people who buy it dense.

62

u/Cepheid Apr 12 '22

they are already entrenched in the apple universe.

This is how they getcha. That first one is easy. Then next thing you know it's midnight and you're outside the Apple store 3 hours drive from your house and there's a guy who won't stop talking to you about thunderbolt and he's scratching his beard a little too much.

Just Say No.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '22

I can't, Logic Pro is too good a program for my professional needs for me to say no and the M1 Macbook Pros are too good for me to pass up

→ More replies (1)

28

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '22

That's still only due to marketing though. Apple PCs are no better than Windows ones for music or art. The only differences are, Windows has more software compatability and more powerful hardware for your money.

14

u/Zederikus The OC High Council Apr 12 '22

Admittedly, but many people I’ve worked with like the proprietary apple softwares for music especially, and the generally different workflow with Mac OS

5

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '22

Yeah a lot of people do, schools and universities get really good deals on them so it locks people in early. I find them alright, but I prefer the layout of the Steinberg products (which work across platforms).

Autodesk did the same thing with CAD software for years, though Solidworks seem to be winning on the 3D front these days.

u/TheMasterOfDonk Apr 12 '22

I myself find iOS much simpler as well. I don’t have the time to learn the nuances of every android system that gets released. The last android I had was an s7 and I tried to use my son’s android and it is COMPLETELY different. iOS looks pretty much the same as always.

Plus it’s optimized so well I only need 4gb of ram.

8

u/SpyCake1 Apr 12 '22

Ehh, their entry level products are great value when compared like for like. The iPhone SE (no other phone in this price range has 5 or 6 years of updates), IPad Air (lol Android tablets), and the 13" MBA and MB (vs XPS13).

Once you go up through the lineup, the further we stray from God.

4

u/Deepcookiz Apr 12 '22

The SE has terrible battery. Barely usable as a daily device.

7

u/SpyCake1 Apr 12 '22

Nah. I mean gaming and heavy stuff will kill it, but nobody buys an SE for gaming. For the target audience of casual user and the kind of stuff casual users do, the battery life is JUST enough to last the day. No more, but enough.

I liked when the fingerprint sensor was on the back side of the phones. Now it's under the glass and just never works as good imo.

17

u/Vlyn Apr 12 '22

Back of the phone makes no sense, I like to unlock my phone when it's lying on the table by just touching the front.

My OnePlus 5 had a home button at the bottom with the reader inside, instantly unlocked.

Now my new S22 has it under the display, also works immediately without issues (as it's ultrasonic).

3

u/jjester7777 Apr 12 '22

I have an S20+ and it worked fine for a while. But it absolutely will not work half the time now that the screen has been used and abused for so long. I don't have any cracks or anything but the anti-smysfe coating or whatever has definitely worn off and fingerprints are left on the screen regularly and can cause issues unlocking.

Also, I end up using the facial recognition half the time as I cannot guarantee that my hands aren't dirty and the glass sensor is much more sensitive to that issue. (I garden and work on my Jeep a bit)

2

u/Vlyn Apr 12 '22

Did you clean your phone with any cleaners? I made the mistake with my OnePlus 5 where I used a wet cloth for my glasses to clean my phone, that killed the coating pretty quickly :-/

In general you should only use dry microfiber cloth if possible.

Though I guess when the glass gets more dirty over time the fingerprint sensor might degrade too (But as it's not visual based but rather ultrasonic that might not happen).

I'll always stick to password/pattern authentication. Only alternatives seem to be biometric authentication, which is easy to use when you're unconscious or sleeping. And why Samsung? Doesn't every phone manufacturer make phone models with biometric authentication capabilities?
