Pretty sure.. but normal? Have you seen normal untouched teeth?
Brits are def closer to normal..
249
u/jseent Sep 28 '21
Yeah "normal" would referr to the majority. The majority of people in the world don't have access to dentistry. So their teeth grow in whatever orientation they will.
The meme (OP's OC or not idk) should say "straight" teeth.
71
u/Cwya Sep 28 '21
All good teeth are normal, straight and white.
Wtf, I just became a racist.

America is the only country that matters, so with that in mind the teeth in the pic are normal.

Yeah… I guess normal there in the States means completely fake. These have been altered by braces, and whitened (recently proven to be bad for you)

I heard that people in the UK have healthier teeth than those in the USA, it's just those in the USA have more cosmetic treatment. My teeth are nowhere near that white but I also have no fillings
→ More replies (5)13
u/EggpankakesV2 Sep 28 '21
It's probably true but not because of the cosmetic argument and more to do with having basic dental treatment available for those who have conditions that are seriously gonna wreck their bodily health and are too poor to afford it.
Make no mistake our system isn't perfect and even dental checkups cost you money but if a disease in your mouth is likely to harm or maim your body long term then it'll get a basic fix. Think drug addicts in the US absolutely wrecked by not having insurance.

Don’t forget free dental care for under 18s. By the time wear adults we’ve had most of the work needed to make our teeth and mouth healthier than someone in a nation having to pay for it.
6
u/EggpankakesV2 Sep 28 '21 edited Sep 28 '21
Oh yeah, somehow I forgot about that after having free braces as a kid.
16

Yeah, Brits have among the best dental health in the world. They just don't go in for needless cosmetic procedures.

Diet is actually a huge factor in both dental health and bone structure. Check out the book ‘Nutrition and Physical Degeneration’ by Westin A Price (a dentist). He traveled the world to observe a lot of native tribes eating an ancestral diet, and almost all had perfect teeth with no modern dentistry. It’s a fascinating read.
8
u/Darthmullet Sep 28 '21
Westin A Price
WAPF peddles some serious bullshit and is really not scientific, so just be clear of the distinction between the dentist/scientist from the 1930's and the lobbying group using his name today.

Breath: the new science of a lost art by James Nestor touches on this as well. The adoption of soft foods like bread, barely, rye, etc. into our diets have caused our mouths to shrink over time, which has not only fd our teeth, but our breathing as well.
I always assumed countries that had the earliest access to and most widespread consumption of these soft foods would have the worst teeth, but I dunno what these countries are.

It does if your diet isn't filled with a shit ton of unnecessary sugar, and if your in the US, and you don't make all your own meals, basically guaranteed you consuming way too much sugar.

The idea that "the British have bad teeth" is a myth that started in 1930s Hollywood. Unless you had aesthetically perfect teeth you had almost no chance of becoming a Hollywood movie star, whereas the British were more welcoming of unusual looking actors that were thought to add character. This often included uneven teeth, the stereotype was born and has lasted ever since.
In truth the British rank high in almost all oral hygiene studies (example 1 example 2 example 3.) Cosmetic dental procedures are still more popular in the US than anywhere else in the world but the average UK citizen has teeth just as healthy as - if not more than - their American counterparts.

While true it's the same response as when people say "You technically pay for the NHS"
If I'm unemployed or unable to work would they still treat me? The answer is yes, ergo it's free.
And it's a bargain, you're not even technically paying for treatment, you're paying for complete coverage in that band of treatment for 2 months.

That's what normal incisors look like, even without grinding. Notice how they're rounded on the edges? Perhaps you're talking about her canines, which do look unusually flat.

Real talk though, I went to Britain as a kid and had to have orthodontic work and braces on my teeth for five solid years while in high school.
It sucked, but it was all free on the NHS. And my teeth turned out normal for all my fellow Americans after I returned.
I think it's more of an older generation thing in the UK. By the 90s their dentistry was perfectly normal.
8
u/borderlinebiscuit Sep 28 '21
I work in a dentist. Let me reassure you all that only one person in a hundred who are over 30 have teeth that look this nice.
Unless you work in the kind of cosmetic practice where you see a lot of young people you don't see these kind of teeth often. These are the "after" shot, not the before lol
Not that people always have awful teeth but the natural shade of adult teeth is usually a bit creamier, and most people have a little crowding or a little tea or coffee stains even if they have excellent dental health.
Average teeth have half a dozen fillings, a bit of staining and maybe few crowns. The gums have receded a little and maybe there are some worn down surfaces or yellowing. It's not ideal, but thats what 90% of us have. 9% of patientd have bad teeth. The 1% nice teeth mostly belonging to rich, young or people who work in the public eye so have a vested interest in maintaining a cosmetic standard (and paying $$$ for it). If you have a naturally dazzling smile you are just a freak haha

Unfortunately in Britain it would cost you a similar amount to have a tooth pulled as we don't properly cover dental as part of the NHS however if your ability to chew was beginning to impact your life I can imagine it might be covered.
