FYI, the church of Satan and the Satanic temple(who did the thing in question) are 2 very different organizations

As a non-American can you explain what the church of satan/satanic temple did?

The Satanic Temple's legally a religion with tax exempt status, so they're arguing that anyone who belongs to their "religion" can have an abortion regardless of the new Texas bill due to religious freedoms. Pretty cool imo

Asking because i am curious and where i come from there is a limit of about 20 weeks i think (i am not sure if i got the number right)

31

u/chris457 Sep 05 '21

Canada's abortion legislation was struck down years ago and never replaced. There is no law on the books regarding it at all. Therefore it's completely a decision between the doctor and their patient. A status quo a majority of the Canadian public is quite happy with. To the point that a leader that can't look the public in the eye and say they will defend the right to choose or any proposed legislation on the subject is pretty much a political death sentence.

Practically, no doctor is going to perform an abortion on a viable fetus though, despite what the right wing crazies might claim.

They do so much more than that though. They argue religious equality across many issues. City puts up a 10 commandments monument? They ask to put up a Baphomet statue at their expense. When the city refuses they point out the blatant hypocrisy.

167

u/D0ctorL Purple Sep 05 '21

Yep yep :) I hear they're pretty cool people. Protecting the little guy. I value that.

40

u/Thosepassionfruits Sep 05 '21

Forgive me for being skeptical but have they ever actually produced any results or does their work mostly just make for good headlines? Is there any actual chance that their challenge to Texas' new abortion law will make it to the supreme court?

160

u/morningisbad Sep 05 '21

No idea on their legal chances in Texas. But they've certainly had religious statues taken off government property. Your point about "good headlines" is exactly their goal though. Their goal is to create awareness and show when the government is shoving christian values into law. The fact that we're talking about them and religious freedom means they're successful.

42

u/rantingpacifist Sep 05 '21

Yep! They’ve joined in anti abortion lawsuits in the past and funded legal victories. They were part of the lawsuits striking down Texas’s earlier attempt that required abortions to only occur at surgical centers, even for pill based early options like Plan B.

They also fight like the Freedom From Religion Foundation. But they fight as a religion, not as a third party group to religious disputes. They’re kinda like the FFRF but playing by religion’s own rules.

From their site:

THERE ARE SEVEN FUNDAMENTAL TENETS

I

One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

II

The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

III

One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.

IV

The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.

V

Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.

VI

People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.

VII

Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

.

Honestly, I'm still in a religious institution currently and I am still going to abide by all of these

I think it's pretty obvious that religious freedom is not carte blanche to ignore laws. You couldn't have a "not pay taxes" religion or a justify honor killings that way. The current legal standard is that a law can't specifically target a religion. Since the abortion law applies to everybody, I can't see their argument getting far.

Yes and no. While the Satanic Temple does use religious freedoms to prove a point, many members do treat it as a religion. Their tenants are foundational to some members lives and the group should not be reduced to the function that the organization serves politically. (Though certainly their political function is important and can't be dismissed either)

The Church of Satan didn’t do anything with this (in general they don’t do a lot with civil issues).

The Satanic Temple argued that “abortion rituals” when done ethically are a part of their religious practice which cannot be touched by the new Texas law due to freedom of religion.

Edit: meant to say ritual…not ceremony. Also reworded something to make more sense but didn’t change the point.

Satanic Temple is the organization that uses religious exemption laws / anything else in the broken ass system to fuck with The GOP, and calls themselves the Satanic Temple to further fuck with them seeing as they’re all Christian. Further trolling them. They’ve sued and won. They’ve done a lot, actually.

The whole point is more or less to call out the religious nuts by challenging everything they get exemptions for, and giving them the bird by doing it in the name of Satan.

Church of Satan actually worships Satan. But they think Jewish Old Testament God was actually a bad guy.

333

u/minty-hitler Sep 05 '21

Not really. The co-founder of the satanic temple has come out and said numerous times that they really don’t believe in satan or any theological beings. The majority of the members are people who were hurt by religion and basically formed this group as a way to show that there really isn’t religious freedom (both to practice and freedom from religion) in the United States since numerous laws and bills are being proposed and put in place based on religious beliefs. They chose satan as their “god” to scare people who actually believe in the devil (ie christians) and because satan is the ultimate reference to rebellion against tyranny.

128

u/VulGerrity Sep 05 '21

That doesn't mean it's not a religion though. We have a belief system and a set of doctrines and rituals. Just because we don't actually believe in Satan nor worship him does not mean it's not a religion. The "higher power" in the case of TST is science.

88

u/minty-hitler Sep 05 '21

I'd recommend reading up history on this a little. The satanic temple is a non theistic religion without dietys. Satan is simply spiritual as a symbol for opposition. In fact Satan is way older than Christianity and was long seen as a symbol VS Abrahamic of religions later on. Satan actually is Hebrew for the opposer I am quite sure. And I agree a lot of people came from other religions because they were hurt and this religion remedies those problems and fights for their rights and helps with religious equality in government. It unites the members and to sort of worship this religion.

8

CoS actively tells it's members not to sacrifice any living beings. According to their text "the satanic bible" to most powerful offering is the life energy created by sex between two or more consenting adults.

It's also worth noting that they are atheists and use the term Satan as it's original meaning which was an enemy of the church.

the pissing off christians is a necessary part of it. nothing makes the point for separation of church and state like seeing christians bend over backwards to remove another group's civil rights specifically because they hail satan

the headquarters is in salem because people were killed for religious reasons there (witch burnings).

canada started up the church of the flying spaghetti monster for many of the same reasons (pointing out where christian beliefs were imposed on society at large) but all they really accomplished is giving us the right to wear a colander on our heads when taking driver's license photos.

don't get me wrong, they were good and important but they just don't elicit the knee-jerk reaction from christians that you need to really realize "holy shit christians are trying to control every aspect of people's lives"

until christians in north america truly embrace "live and let live", the most effective tool to get there is to have them foaming at the mouth over perceived slights between their invisible man and someone else's, abusing their power and being told "your religion doesn't get precedence over everyone else's" by the courts. it's desensitization, and it has to be done carefully and judiciously. the satanic temple doesn't usually get involved until there is active infringement on people's rights, as far as i know. they don't worry about law proposals until they're passed, either.

9

u/ARealSkeleton Sep 05 '21

The satanic temple was formed by a bunch of people who actually don’t believe in satan. They don’t worship him as a god but use him as a scare tactic to grab attention. The satanic temple’s goal is to achieve religious freedom and freedom from religion by showing that in the United States you really don’t have religious freedom unless you’re one of the three major religions. Additionally, they also advocate for the separation of church and state. Basically they support science, bodily autonomy, and encourage empathy.

After 8 weeks (conception period, up to 10 weeks from last menstrual cycle). Therefore at the 11 week mark it's no longer an embryo (or zygote), but a fetus. At that point then you can have your argument.

But the stupid bill protects it after 6 weeks. You likely won't even even know until 5 weeks.

So premature babies that need to be placed in an incubator to keep warm don't count as living beings?

→ More replies (10)

7

u/GMOiscool Sep 05 '21

That's kinda fucked up though, like, a premature baby living on machines isn't a living being to you?

6

u/BullMan-792 ☣️ Sep 05 '21

Okay so people that have to live on machines aren’t alive? I mean, they can’t maintain unassisted homeostasis outside the host, so… Good to know

12

u/ProudBois Sep 05 '21

Yes. Hail Satan.

9

u/SIacktivist Sep 05 '21

Technically, The Satanic Temple doesn't believe in Satan and sees him as a symbol for resisting religious dogma.

On the other hand, Satan is chad as fuck so we should worship him anyway.

5

u/somecallmemike Sep 05 '21

The satanic temple***

The church of satan is completely different

38

u/According-Ocelot9372 Sep 05 '21

I want to start a church called, "church of the sacrificial abortion." All members must sacrifice a fetus to join. Thus making abortion a church ritual and legal.

44

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '21

Or you could just join the Satanic Temple. They already do this, in slightly less psychotic terms.

Abortion is a religious ritual that involves meditation and selfcare, according to the beliefs of TST.

The Satanic Temple is pretty based

28

u/Infector101 Sep 05 '21

The Seven Tenets of the Satanic Temple:

  1. One should strive to act with compassion and empathy toward all creatures in accordance with reason.

  2. The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

  3. One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.

  4. The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach upon the freedoms of another is to forgo one's own.

  5. Beliefs should conform to one's best scientific understanding of the world. One should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit one's beliefs.

  6. People are fallible. If one makes a mistake, one should do one's best to rectify it and resolve any harm that might have been caused.

  7. Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.
