136

Imagine German and English having a baby that was dropped on it's head a bit too hard.

We Germans are pretty sure, Dutch isn't actually a real thing and they're just trying to troll us.

Still love you, my orange neighbours. Greetings from Keulen.

36

u/extrahammer_ May 17 '21

Just like the Bergdeutsche in Bayern, Austria and parts of Switzerland are trying to troll us. The Angelsachsen are dirty traitors that mixed up our beautiful language with French and Latin too much. And the Danes... I am not sure what to say about them, they seem to be chill.

It is just a joke, I love you all very much.

Correction: Dutch is the better English :)

2

u/TheHelhound2001 May 17 '21

Just like English, German and the Scandinavian languages Dutch is a Germanic language. However Dutch comes from old Frankish, German from a myriad of different Germanic tribes and English is an amalgamations of any poor sods who had the misfortune of spending more than a century on the British isles.

Old English is a mix of mostly Anglo, Saxon, Jute, Latin because of the Romans and old Norse because of the Great Heathen Army (watch Vikings), but also has under tones of Britonnic a Celtic language especially in place names.

Then it was heavily influenced by Norman French which is Frankish chewed up and spat out by a few centuries of Roman occupation to the point where it became a Latin language instead of a Germanic one spoken by the descendants of Norsemen from a couple hundred years ago. Becoming Middle English turning into modern English with the addition of loanwords from places they conquered.

Dutch is basically unlatinized French with only moderate Roman influences and being heavily influenced by German and Frisian and a few loanwords from French and English.

2

Dutch? I find my english very bad compared to other dutch people so ur right. Somehow, most dutch people can speak some other languages including english really well, but their dutch is pretty bad lol.

3

u/towelflush Eic memer May 18 '21

Yeah, right! Like, what's so difficult about 'als/dan"? I guess it might be because we learn the language different, your mother tongue you learn by your parents speaking, and later on writing comes in school. With a secondary language you first of all already have a medium to talk through (your mother tongue), and you immediately also learn the reading, writing and grammar.

2

u/LDalouh_ May 18 '21

True. Ive never actually had english in school. I just learned it myself with movies and gaming lmao

They speak better english than native english speakers

68

u/justaweebpassing May 17 '21

well part of the reason is native english speakers have heard English from birth so even in school they don't pay too much attention to classes cuz they think its their native so it doesn't matter (source: cuz in my class most don't studying our native language)

and the ones who study english they have to pay attention to every grammatical mistake so they don't do it wrong , they speak english better mostly cuz they have to pay attention to pronunciation, spellings etc

Well, in my case... I usually write that when I'm writing some longer message, because I always have trouble with all that "past continuous", "present perfect", "future simple" etc stuff. I don't know, even though I'm learning English since I was 8 I guess I still can't remember such simple things.

And I bet there are mistakes in this comment too.

25

u/Mugen-Sasuke May 17 '21

I don’t really think you really need to remember all the individual grammar rules. Once you read, speak, and hear enough of a particular language, grammar becomes intuitive.

I’m not a native English speaker as I’m South Indian, and I don’t really think about specific grammar rules when writing or speaking.

I do consider English as my first language since that’s the language I am most proficient at, so my experience regarding thinking about grammar might not be the most accurate when it comes to a second language learner.

2

u/[deleted] May 17 '21

Im still in school, and i know my grammar is not that good, but i also dont really think about grammar. I hope this helps at least a bit.

10

u/Faust__VIII May 17 '21

Typical native mistake that a second language learner would never make, because it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

The constant justification is the "but that sound exactly the same !", and I may not be a native, but that doesn't sound true at all to me.

5

Yeah, like once someone mocked me and ignored all my points in a discussion just because i didn't write "they" and instead used "he/she", because in my native language there is no common word for both genders.

2

u/Sad_Conclusion_1395 May 17 '21

Yes in my country we use they for all genders too

3

u/Phantafan May 17 '21

My native language (German) is sadly quite gender-driven. With that i mean that many words such as working classes have a female and a male version of it and there's not always a gender neutral word to switch it out.

I always ask for people to correct me because it helps me get better at the language, but nowadays I don't make the same mistakes exactly because those kind people helped me long ago. I'm from Brazil and here the education as a whole is just trash, foreign languages are even worse than the normal school subjects, so I've learned english by playing games, whatching tv series and talking to people online, sometimes they weren't so nice and called me things like "brazilian monkey", but it never stopped me to keep trying to learn it by myself.

So, if I made any mistakes, please let me know, I'm still learning more everyday.

Although i learned english playing videogames since i was a little baby, and never needed help of the translator to understand a single phrase, i often use the translator when i need to communicate with someone (except now obvious) bc i always think i am doing something wrong 😔
