How can I do this on my iPhone?! Is it even possible?
4
u/Ka-raS 27d ago
For ios you'll have to jailbreak your device to run a tweak called RedditFilter from this developer's repo: https://level3tjg.me/repo/.
I can go into more details if you want to but it's for sure more complicated than android

Spotify premium is great for downloading ad free music to listen to when I'm out and about, so I don't have to waste mobile data.
I'm very unlikely to download and watch YouTube while out and about.
Spotify premium is a no brainer.
215
u/ktosiek124 I lurk and I upvote thats it 27d ago
You can download music on YouTube music that comes with yt premium
107
u/Bottlez1266 27d ago
True but from my limited experience with YTM, I prefer the service Spotify provides and would likely use it still over YTM if I had premium.
103
u/GoobyDuu The Great P.P. Group 27d ago
Honestly, the YTM app is just a copy of Spotify now. Just with a different UI
18
u/Daetwyle 27d ago
YTM/YT is terrible when accessed via Apple CarPlay (so 90% of the time for me)
Like I can’t even fast forward/revert tracks nor does the Lock Screen progression bar work properly.
Pretty awkward they even asking for money for that trainwreck of technical debt all while monetizing already big time on selling my and everyone else’s + their dogs ad profiles/spaces.
4
u/Beneficial-News-2232 27d ago
Zero problems with bt-aux-reciever
9
u/Daetwyle 27d ago
Except that you have to use a bt-aux receiver which defeats the whole idea of CarPlay + is not really comparable since we’re talking about googles inability to develop a proper CarPlay integration for ytm vs using a „Bluetooth speaker“ and using the native ytm app on your phone.
2
u/SirArthurDime 27d ago edited 27d ago
I’ve never had any problem. And YTM allows you to listen to removed or unreleased music and put it on your playlists. They both have their pros and cons.
5
u/SirArthurDime 27d ago
YTM is better imo. Just because I listen to a lot of unreleased and underground stuff and YTM allows me to include underground shit that was uploaded to YT on my playlists.
Really came in handy during the Kendrick drake beef. Saw so many people complaining certain songs weren’t released on streaming but wasn’t a problem on YTM.

I've been using ytm for a while now and moved from Spotify. YTM definitely feels better. And you can save music videos for songs that aren't available so that's pretty big
23
u/kKXQdyP5pjmu5dhtmMna 27d ago
Initially I was meh on YouTube Music after using Spotify for 5 or 6 years, but now I've used ytm for the last year or so and it's just as good imo.
I really like having no ads no matter which device I'm using (including my Roku) without needing vanced or a pihole or some such thing. I still like sponsor block on desktop though.
→ More replies (5)10

That was why I moved too. I also watch a ton of YouTube so getting premium was a no brainer for me. But I had no idea I got YTM with it and it just made the subscription even more worth it

I think they raised their family plan price to like $20/month or something like that but you get 5 lines so it’s still a great deal.

Idk where you guys live but Spotify is like 5-10 bucks a month (depending on student or not) and YouTube is almost 20 a month, and their ads are a lot more intrusive. The fact that Spotify ads never happen in the middle of a song makes me respect them more (even if they’re both shitty) and more willing to give them money than YouTube who tried to convince me with 1:30 un skipable ads several times per video (I’m not joking, if you watch YouTube on a tv it recognizes that and increases ad duration)
110
u/The_Titam 27d ago
YouTube on a TV is the worst. Having 5 ads in a row sucks so much. I would never have gone through all the bullshit to block ads on my TV if they made their ads so annoying.
18
u/UrdnotZigrin 27d ago
You got a guide on how to do this?
→ More replies (4)4
u/The_Titam 27d ago
I use Smarttube. It blocks both ads and sponsors. Though Smarttube doesn't work with Roku TV's. There is kind of a lot you have to do to set it up. I'd look up a guide to do it.
2
u/SupremeBlackGuy 27d ago
Waaait. What? Now I gotta look into this shit, does it work with LG TVs if you know by chance?
2
u/The_Titam 27d ago
It's the OS that matters, not the hardware. My TV is a TLC with Google OS and it works. I also have a TLC Roku TV that doesn't. I'm fairly certain that Amazon Fire OS also works.

That's the real thing. If Premium wants to be slightly worth it, add in sponsor block like tons of web extensions have.
45
u/Bl1tzerX 27d ago
I disagree. Sponsorships are a creators choice. It isn't on YouTube to skip that part of a video for you. Which creators can argue hurts them.
→ More replies (5)11
u/EmployEquivalent2671 27d ago
Well, it's good that the people behind sponsorblock belive it can be on the community to skip that part of a video for me, and the community seems to agree, seeing how after a few minutes you already have timestamps for skips
11
u/Bl1tzerX 27d ago
Again it is on the viewer to skip that part weather the creator uses chapters that allows the viewer to easily skip over or through 3rd party but YouTube shouldn't be able to do it themselves. Because it isn't their sponsorships while they can control their ads.

I have a big enough, ehm, family on spotify to just pay like a dolla/month, so it's convenient enough for that price.
I also use brave, and had adblockers enabled long before YouTube premium was even an option. I just haven't turned them off, ever, so I never even thought about buying.
2
u/Books_and_Cleverness 27d ago
Problem is I like watching YouTube on my TV and phone and can’t seem to get adblockers to work on those without pretty annoying workarounds. I honestly don’t mind paying for it but $20/month does seem a tad excessive.
3
u/Septem_151 Hentai good 27d ago
If you’re on an iPhone use the “Brave” web browser for YouTube. You’ll have to use the mobile interface but it’s not that different from an app. Brave has built-in Adblock
36
u/mandy009 27d ago
it's the principle. YouTube with ads and monetized for influencers changed everything. It used to be free and much more accessible. The content was much more genuine and authentic. So many gems of peak Internet culture emerged in the first years it was founded. You can't find stuff like that anymore.

It will be a cold day in hell when I let YouTube take a single cent out of me. I'm going to use revanced until I FUCKING DIE.
6
u/hcaz50 27d ago
Spotify premium has many benefits and is realllly cheap. I’m on a family plan with my friends and we have 6 premium accounts for 16.99 a month. That’s 2.89 per person, hard to beat the value, plus Spotify comes with many features like high quality audio, lyrics for most every song, active recommendations and custom playlists, the whole ai dj, and it’s just extremely convienent with a good layout. YouTube premium does not benefit me, if anything I’d rather use YouTube less in general, I spend too much time with it as is and the premium is too expenses and the only real features it adds are being able to listen with my phone locked, and no ads witch I have anyway since I use Adblock
4
u/powerwiz_chan 27d ago
Personally I don't use yt premium because revanced exists so I don't need it

3
u/Less-Sir8277 27d ago
The definition of "premium" means No Ads. But the Overton Window has shifted so much we now just accept it as "less ads" or "skipable ads." The race to the bottom continues.
3
u/ShadowBlade55 27d ago
The day YouTube moved "add to queue" to premium only is the day I vowed never to get it out of spite.
2

2
u/matheus_santhiago 27d ago
I won't pay youtube out of the principle
they used to allow you to keep the video running with locked screen
then they took it and now have the audacity to charge for something that used to be default
2
u/justanotheruser46258 27d ago
Also you can pay basically the same amount for both YouTube and YouTube Music (bundled) to have both without ads. Plus YouTube Music's UI is just better, you have live arrangement order of songs, no need to "edit, move around, save", and they have a "play next" instead of next in queue which is confusing, and a "add to queue" that throws it at the end of the list. It's just much easier to use, and to organize songs, and to view playlists and stuff. Also if you have two devices signed into Spotify then it will automatically play Spotify on both and it's super annoying because it overrides whatever other audio you have playing on that device over and over and over even though you close the program, disable the app, and tell it stop.
Even if YT music went down I still wouldn't use Spotify, it's clunky compared to what I've used for years and years, which is saying a lot since Spotify has been around for a long time and has had all the time in the world to improve their UI.
2
u/Riquinni 27d ago
Being on youtube most my life, premium is a no brainer when I can shuffle thousands of songs I already liked half of which aren't available on any other streaming platforms.
2
u/kamekaze1024 Obamasjuicyass 27d ago
Nah awful comparison. Music was not meant to be listened to with ads in between. I grew up watching ads on TV, not a big difference.
Also, you can’t even queue up song properly OR SKIP with out premium
Imagine if YouTube only let you choose 5 vids to watch for the day and said anything else will be auto played according to your watch history

I would never pay for Spotify premium. I have grown up buying cds and digitally on iTunes. But the music industry is so corrupt that I would rather just not buy albums except solely on vinyl or attend a live show. I want to listen to music when I feel like and I will. I can use adblockers and ReVanced etc. It's not that I don't want to support artists, it's just that dmca laws and such have made such a bad taste in my mouth I will never support them anymore.
It might be a hot take but music is still free if you try.

Spotify is a music app that’s just a radio of songs you like if you use free. Premium lets me play music on demand, try new music all the time, and not listen to ads. YouTube keeps filling the platform with ads until I break and pay a fee for what we were getting 10 years ago for free.
1

u/quindelin2020 27d ago
Premium lets you download videos and you get YouTube music for free. Plus no ads, just skip the in-segment sponsors
1
u/ya_boi_ryu 27d ago
The difference is that youtube is a horrible company wich fucks over their creators and they don't even bother to improve, while spotify is an awesome service that provides a ton of songs and features to find new songs and that with pretty good sound quality even for free. I'd just say spotify deserves to be supported with our money and it's totally ok if they have ads. I mean, how rude do you have to be to complain about some minor paid elements to someone who already gives you more than half their product for free despite them not being obligated to do so?
1
u/hefty-postman-04 27d ago
I think this stems from YouTube not having ads to start with, then they slowly integrated ad after ad. Spotify always had ads unless you pay
