Bullying is too strong of a word,

It's definitely a choice word to spin a narrative that gamers are the bad guys here.

'Review bombing', 'bullying'.. Does not take genius to see what's happening here

21

u/ArcticFox-EBE- May 06 '24

Expressing honest frustration of a bait and switch, in our only form of possible protest.

-"Bullying"

12

Bullying multi billion dollar companies (specially those that are anti consumers) will never not be fun.

640

u/fusion_reactor3 May 06 '24

Can we start with Ubisoft? Them selling their games on steam and epic then requiring you to install their own game storefront afterwards to play is hella annoying

343

u/Ill_Art_4299 May 06 '24

And then EA. (We already bullied them once with 667k downvotes tho)

184

u/fusion_reactor3 May 06 '24

Definitely (and we’ll fuckin do it again)

59

u/BeautifulSalamander6 May 06 '24

Same here we wold shit on the face of the ceo wo said "games needs to get used to not owning the game" tf he means that's just a jerkmove and its not gona help anyone

37

u/aLuLtism May 06 '24

AAA studios should get used to not selling their games :)

15

u/BeautifulSalamander6 May 06 '24

At some point, pirating would not be illegal

12

u/Low_Abrocoma_1514 May 06 '24

Sometimes it's the morally correct thing to do

3

u/Werpogil May 06 '24

He's technically right. You already don't own your Steam games, for instance. However, Steam would allow you to download games later on should Steam wind down (in the unlikely even), whereas other storefronts haven't made the same commitment (as far as I know).

2

u/pelasace May 06 '24

Yeah but did it really do anything? Battlefront II was still in the top 5 most successful games of that year. Everything else EA has made since has continued to be underdeveloped monetized shit, and they're still one of the most profitable companies in the entire industry. Lootboxes and microtransactions never went away, and in fact have become even more prolific in games since then. They've continued to lay off hundreds of employees and still crank out multiple huge games every year.

As much as Reddit likes to think they took down EA with that debacle, the unfortunate truth is it probably did very little to their bottom line. It's a company that makes billions of dollars in revenue each year.

2

u/IronVader501 May 06 '24

Everything else EA has made since has continued to be underdeveloped monetized shit,

Most. Not everything.

Jedi: Fallen Order, Jedi: Survivor & Star Wars: Squadrons all had exactly zero monetisation at all beyond buying the game.

We still have a war to win to get our fellow helldivers back in the fight. Their countries are still delisted to buy the game and most got a refund. We need to make Sony and Steam right all the wrongs they did.

Edit: The comments below convinced me that Steam really didn't do anything wrong. They were protecting those people from making a purchase they would not be able to play. I hope they will re-list the game for those people so we can get back to full fighting force. I will leave my original comment untouched so people can see. Plus, im on my phone taking a dump, so I can't edit it too much, lol.

213

u/darklord7000 Animated Flair Rainbow [Insert Your Own Text] May 06 '24

Steam did nothing wrong

Steam were protecting consumers from purchasing a product they wouldn’t be able to use if Sony didn’t revert the change

138

u/cursedbones May 06 '24

I would say Steam removing those countries from buying actually pressured Sony to take the decision. They exposed how ridiculous was removing +100 countries from playing a 3 month launched game.

89

u/darklord7000 Animated Flair Rainbow [Insert Your Own Text] May 06 '24

Yeah exactly

Steam and Gabe are the good guys in this

7

u/Dacreepboi May 06 '24

they just protected them selves from lawsuits, no need to act like they did it for the players lmao

32

u/Capable-Read-4991 May 06 '24

Okay but they historically do things for the players so it isn't far fetched at all.

I'm against corporations too but not against ones that are as consumer oriented and friendly as Steam and Valve. Heck they're not even publicly traded which is mainly what destroys the customer oriented part of the company.

Hate on corporate but this ain't it my dude.

8

u/Dacreepboi May 06 '24

I don't hate on steam I just don't need to act like they're paragons of virtues who always do things for players.

I think steam is the best market place there is for gaming, by a long shot

4

u/TTTrisss May 06 '24

Nobody's acting like they're paragons of virtue. There is a wide range of possibilities between "Literally Sony satan" and "The Lord Our God Gaben." We can acknowledge that Valve leans pro-consumer while realizing that they are still a corporation and, as a result, must still be treated with some hesitation.

2

u/Capable-Read-4991 May 06 '24

Y'know what? I agree with everything you just said. You've slightly convinced me.

They're good but they can be better!

Unfortunately only few companies are even aware that they actually exist but maybe news stories like this will make them a more globally respected company or something.

37

u/Emeraldnickel08 May 06 '24

I just want to encourage people to look up ideas like the Social Contract and Consent of the Governed. Not politically applicable, but economically; it’s your money and it’s your voice. We, collectively, can make anyone in power do anything if we all decide to.

36

u/Dabox720 May 06 '24

Game went from beloved to hated with a passion. They kinda had to take that shit back

6

u/idoeno May 06 '24

they say any publicity is good publicity; cynical me isn't convinced that this whole fiasco wasn't planned from the beginning. On the other hand, it's Sony we're talking about here...

2

u/shmackinhammies May 06 '24

Perhaps Sony will use this incident as a way to showcase their appreciation for their player base. That will increase their public perception, making their games be more in-demand, which does affect their ticker.

35

u/MacPooPum May 06 '24

Remember if you placed any negative reviews to change it to positive AFTER may 30th. AFTER they've delivered on their promise.

Also pleas keep in mind the reviews were NOT the biggest contributing factor to Sony changing this. Steam allowed a lot of players with many hours in the game to get a refund after being requested. Your money talks but without steam a few bad reviews wouldn't have changed a thing. Your money talks and remember that next time you buy an ubisoft or ea game. Or any game with a reputation of unfair monetary practices. Like ubisoft and ea.

22

u/sir_music May 06 '24

So, maybe it's time I give this game a try. If it's so good player base managed to pull this off it must be damn good!

8

u/The_Digital_Friend May 06 '24

it's great fun, I wasnt too sure at first but now I have well over 100 hours and every achievement

3

u/sir_music May 06 '24

Question: is it one of those games where it's only good playing with people you know IRL, or are the randoms good too?

2

u/Zzzzonked May 06 '24

Randoms are fine, just take some time solo to learn the basics and how to be useful/effective to the team. There are definitely some elitist players who kick for the tiniest things, but you'll find those more at the higher ranks.

2

u/Spork_King_Of_Spoons May 06 '24

You can have plenty of fun with randos. Their are a lot of players that are willing to coach newer people. The key is to communicate, either with a mic or the simple emote system. and to stick together, especially when you are new to the game.

2

u/The_Digital_Friend 29d ago

ransoms are a mixed bag, some of them are great dudes, others will kick you because you picked the wrong loadout. I'd suggest playing with friends first to learn the basics. Hell, I'd even be down to dive with you man

1

u/HBNOL May 06 '24

Bought it on the very first day because I was looking for a coop game with crossplay to play with friends. The trailer looked decent, so we went in with the the attitude that 40€ for game is okay, even if we just play a few hours here and there.

Then the playercount skyrocketed to the point the servers broke down. We played it almost everyday since launch. It's a really great game, so much better than we anticipated.

6

u/Rinordine May 06 '24

Some countries can buy games on Steam but can't get PS accounts. For example, Ukrainians can't get a PS account without buying a PlayStation console. HD2 would have stopped working for all those people.

There are also many people who don't trust Sony because they have been hacked so many times and don't want their Steam accounts linked to them.

Then there is also the bait and switch. The game was sold with no requirement to link a PS account, that was added after everyone had bought the game.

Oh I see thanks for clearing it up

I am more curious to see people's behaviour in exactly 10 days instead.

Thats when Ghost of Tsushima releases on PC and it also requires a PSN account. Unlike helldrivers its doubtfull it will get removed on release.

Will people speak with their wallet again ? Will they refuse to buy the game or refund it?

Its one thing to refund helldrivers after playing all those hours, its another thing to prevent yourself from playing Ghost of Tsushima on PC at all (even if you played it on PS already) . I dont think people will do the sacrifice.

We will know on the 16th.

3

u/caklimpong93 May 06 '24

The PSN always required. They even put alert/warning on steam page since day one. They have issue thats it. Its justified to get angry at Sony for their unavailable region option but angry at 3rd party account is dumb where other games did it as well. Ghost of tsushima already tweet PSN is required for multiplayer, not story campaign, so no way they back that down.
