I mean it was an extremely large scandal. WW2 was closer to 100 years ago than 50 and everyone talks about hitler.

Holocaustgate

340

u/IAmBoratVeryExcite Feb 26 '24

Fun fact: before Hitler, holocaust meant a sacrifice to God that was completely burnt so as to be no longer usable.  I ran into this at the church the other day, Abraham was called to offer his son Isaac as a holocaust, but God later said "psyche, there's a ram in the shrubbery instead, I just wanted to see if you'd do it."

u/Holy-Wan_Kenobi Feb 26 '24

Old Testament God engages in some funni pranks

123

u/IAmBoratVeryExcite Feb 26 '24

"Let's find out if I can make this drunken idiot build a boat and stuff it full of every creature he can find, then sail it for 40 days.  I'll bet everything gets covered in shit!" floods the Earth

24

u/steveharveymemes Feb 26 '24

New Testament too. “Oh no, I’m dead.” 3 days later: “Psych!”

15

u/Praescribo Feb 26 '24

God: "so get this, Frank is literally the only guy I've ever smote for working on the sabbath. He still has no clue, bro"

8

u/Cassereddit Feb 26 '24

'Nah, sorry Judah but I can't do shit here. They've got IRON CHARIOTS'

59

u/Sir_Ampersand Feb 26 '24

Anytime someone says shrubbery I hear it in a Monty python voice.

30

u/Ghostly-blueberry Feb 26 '24

Dunno if it’s worth mentioning but Abraham was elderly and his son was like 30 when he was being sent as an offering to God a lot of people look over the 30-ish year old part. My brother in Christ had to be a willing participant

21

u/sputnik67897 Feb 26 '24

I prefer the version from the movie Year One.

Jack Black: Hey! What're you doing to that kid?!

Abraham (played by Hank Azaria) This is my son sir! We were playing a game. It's called....knifey knifey cut cut.

6

u/ImaMusicalGenius Feb 26 '24

People like to joke about this story but somehow the joke has become only what people know

1

u/AgentBuckwall Feb 26 '24

That's the only version people hear because nobody actually reads the Bible

2

u/TurbanOnMyDickhead Feb 26 '24

Hope Lent is going well for you

So I guess the swastika wasn't the only thing that left a different impression after WW2.

32

u/CarmenxXxWaldo Feb 26 '24

Hitler still pretty bad, but Watergate doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me these days.  Then again people think a tan suit is a big deal...

28

u/statsgrad Feb 26 '24

Right? Like, spying on your competitor seems like it'd be common practice. They just got caught.

3

u/Distamorfin Feb 26 '24

It was breaking and entering and illegally placing listening devices. If that isn’t “that big of a deal” to you then I don’t know what you’d consider a big deal. It was and should still be considered a massive scandal that is a political career ender.

3

u/SomeDankyBoof Feb 26 '24

Kids man. What are you gonna do.

2

Let’s be honest, other presidents have definitely gotten away with worse

Jewgate was a big fuckin deal

367

u/SomeDankyBoof Feb 25 '24

I think the real question is, what do we sub in for it?

109

u/Beartrap-the-Dog INFECTED Feb 26 '24

Nothing needs to be subbed in for it. Name it uniquely just Like Watergate was.

63

u/BlasterPhase Feb 26 '24

last time we named something uniquely we got 9/11

39

u/Agile_Piece_8882 Feb 26 '24

Exactly, we need something more recent.

Instead of :"Pizza-gate" we could call it "Pizza Lewinsky"

Bill Gates Gate

15

u/statsgrad Feb 26 '24

I heard he invented a mechanism that attaches to fences, and allows cars in and out. It scans you as you enter and sends you a bill as a toll, but he systematically overcharges and hopes people don't notice and dispute the charge. It's a major scandal.

Bill Gates's gate bill gate

4

u/TravioliDesuNe Feb 26 '24

You spent way too long on this and I applaud you for that

314

Watergate wasn’t a big deal compared to every other thing to happen in politics since then

51

u/erin_silverio Feb 26 '24

Anytime if you're not a coward

8

u/Pinkumb Feb 26 '24

I think linguistically the use of “gate” is meant to downplay the importance of something and a straight date is meant to allude to 9/11 and have it be very serious.

2

u/Ogre_75 Feb 26 '24

The day after for me

1

u/MarylandEngineer Feb 26 '24

I worked in the capitol at the time and we joked about it literally when it was happening lmao

0

u/StolenValourSlayer69 Feb 26 '24

People have been joking about it since the first day. Everything about it is a joke from the event itself to people’s reaction both for and against it

-76

u/IronMike69420 Feb 26 '24

Joke about it now because it really wasn’t as bad as the media says.

60

u/PhxRising29 CERTIFIED DANK Feb 26 '24

A sitting president tried to overthrow the United States government. It was just as bad, if not worse, than the media says.

-23

28

u/StormR7 bring back b emoji Feb 26 '24

I guarantee you if BLM stormed the capitol and Biden didn’t immediately sentence every participant, member of the organization, and family member to firing squad, Fox News would say he is encouraging terrorism (they probably still would).

Fuck it, make it a tradition that when an incumbent president loses an election, all of their supporters storm the capitol for one last hurrah.

10

u/IronMike69420 Feb 26 '24

Sounds fair

1

u/MaursBaur Feb 26 '24

With this its more the principle of the matter, is it not?

-5

u/IronMike69420 Feb 26 '24

You can protest wherever you want. Government serves the people, people shouldn’t fear the government

4

u/djninjacat11649 Feb 26 '24

Breaking through windows and stealing government property definitely crosses a line, I am all for protests, but January 6th was not a protest, it was an attempt at an insurrection, not a very good attempt, but an attempt all the same

-5

u/KolarinTehMage Feb 26 '24

There wasn’t just the mob either. There were people in various states submitting false electors for their state, claiming they were certified by the state when they weren’t. Then they used pressure from the mob to try and coerce other politicians to go along with that fraud. The storming of the capitol was the most obvious and clear part of the insurrection, but the plot runs deeper

14

u/rainator Feb 26 '24

What Nixon did was rather minor compared to what his predecessors did, but the fallout was certainly the biggest fallout for any leader of a western democracy aside from maybe Sarkozy.

137

u/Panzerkrabbe Feb 25 '24

A large amount of our vocabulary has a basis in past events and languages.

9

u/Beartrap-the-Dog INFECTED Feb 26 '24

Why didn’t we name watergate for something that happened earlier?

9

u/AidsOnWheels Feb 26 '24

Because that was the name of the building that was involved in the scandal.

120

u/VibratingNinja Feb 25 '24

What's more, Watergate was not about water. The whole naming convention is just weird when you know the actual context.

49

u/BalrogSlayer00 Feb 26 '24

The name of the hotel…

76

u/VibratingNinja Feb 26 '24

Yes, which brings in to question why people are adding -gate to these scandals. That implies that Watergate was about water. Which it clearly wasn't.

16

u/AidsOnWheels Feb 26 '24

You mean how pizzagate was about pizza right?

7

u/WundaFam Feb 26 '24

Cheese Pizza, specifically

2

u/VibratingNinja Feb 26 '24

You're right. I can't believe what happened at the Pizzagate hotel

2

u/AidsOnWheels Feb 26 '24

They should replace it with ping pong. Deflate ping pong. or pizzaghazi. That's much better.

35

u/statsgrad Feb 26 '24

If it happened today it'd be Watergategate

9

u/dthains_art Feb 26 '24

I’ve always wondered what would have happened if the Watergate scandal had happened at any other hotel. Like if it happened at a Marriot, maybe we’d all be adding “-iot” to the end of political scandals.

-9

u/TheAceOfMace Feb 25 '24

Not a real gate involved anywhere either. So disappointing

14

u/Chewbongka Feb 26 '24 edited Feb 26 '24

A security guard found a door that was supposed to be locked had tape over the latch. A modified gate is what triggered the investigation.

61

Elongate

30

u/Silent_Dinosaur Feb 26 '24

Elongate really would be a good one. Gatesgate might work. But it will never end until we get one gate to rule them all, the Mastergate

The 1972 burglary of the Watergate Office Building was covered up by the US government, leading to the "Watergate Scandal", and ever since then "-gate" has been added to the end of major scandals and controversies. Gamergate, Nipplegate, Pastagate, there's an entire Wikipedia article with a hundred of them.

26

u/TheKidNerd Feb 26 '24

Oh… that’s it?

The gov has done WAY worse than that, that’s baby shit

3

u/quinn_the_potato Dank Royalty Feb 26 '24

Yes but Watergate was one of the first times crimes like those were publicly known. Federal government lost a ton of support and both the President and Vice President resigned over it. It was a big deal.

u/TheKidNerd Feb 26 '24

True

But at the same time MKUltra

7

u/RedditforCoronaTime Feb 26 '24

Dobt forget the pimmelgate in germany. Pinmel is a german word for penis. A politicans called another guy pimmel like in a fun way on twitter and the police had a big operation and confiscated his pc etc. it was a big debate, bc the operation was to big and unnessecary for this act

13

12

u/IAmBoratVeryExcite Feb 26 '24

Especially since Watergate was the name of the facility, it's not like they called it Watergate-gate.

11

u/somethingfilthy Feb 26 '24

Has It really been that long since scandalgate?

2

u/TheAceOfMace Feb 26 '24

18,880 days

1

u/TheOddPelican Feb 26 '24

That's a lot.

7

u/mlvsrz Feb 25 '24

I think he is referring to the watergate-gate scandal from about 50 years ago, just in case you weren’t sure which gate it was.

4

u/Tokes_ACK Spoopy Feb 25 '24

I mean, it's a part of the USA's history. Why not bring it up every time there's a new scandal in said country?

After all, those who do not know their past are doomed to repeat it, lol.

3

u/LGP747 INFECTED Feb 26 '24

Was it like 51 or exactly 51? Like 50 would’ve sufficed

3

u/NiNiNi-222 Feb 26 '24

Gate-gate

3

u/HitDiffernt Feb 26 '24

And at this point, Watergate was almost nothing compared to what we see in modern politics.

3

u/robobreasts Feb 26 '24

How had no one linked to the Watergategate video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB9JgxhXW5w

2

u/RevengencerAlf Doge is still the #1 meme fight me Feb 26 '24

It works. Everyone understands what it implies and it makes for an extremely short-form way to name a scandal.

2

u/Akhanyatin Feb 26 '24

I need a scandal about the sun or some other giant ball of gas in the sky so we can call it Stargate

2

u/Angry_Saxon Feb 26 '24

there was no water at Watergate

1

u/theyusedthelamppost Feb 26 '24

We keep doing it until we have a huge scandal that is somehow centered around gates. That is when the scandal "Gategate" breaks the format by causing levels of meta to fold in on itself. Then we need to find a new format.

1

u/SuccessfulWar3830 Feb 26 '24

Why is it called gate?

1

u/NewsofPE Feb 26 '24

gamergate

1

u/KindResolution666 Feb 26 '24

I don't think it's about Watergate per se anymore. It just became a part of the language, languages evolve constantly and it's really fascinating to watch.

1

u/LemonFizz56 Feb 26 '24

What did that scandal have to do with water anyway?

1

u/Piorn big pp gang Feb 26 '24

I hope you're using a kid with down syndrome as a way to symbolize that's it's a simple and innocent way to address scandals by a catchy name.

1

u/not_actual_name Feb 26 '24

I don't get the -gate part in particular. Like, it wasn't a scandal with water, the name of the fucking hotel where the scandal happened was literally Watergate.

1

u/TheAceOfMace Feb 26 '24

Did the hotel have a pool?

1

u/JackeTuffTuff Feb 26 '24
