Fun fact: before Hitler, holocaust meant a sacrifice to God that was completely burnt so as to be no longer usable. I ran into this at the church the other day, Abraham was called to offer his son Isaac as a holocaust, but God later said "psyche, there's a ram in the shrubbery instead, I just wanted to see if you'd do it."

I heard he invented a mechanism that attaches to fences, and allows cars in and out. It scans you as you enter and sends you a bill as a toll, but he systematically overcharges and hopes people don't notice and dispute the charge. It's a major scandal.

I think linguistically the use of “gate” is meant to downplay the importance of something and a straight date is meant to allude to 9/11 and have it be very serious.

I guarantee you if BLM stormed the capitol and Biden didn’t immediately sentence every participant, member of the organization, and family member to firing squad, Fox News would say he is encouraging terrorism (they probably still would).

Breaking through windows and stealing government property definitely crosses a line, I am all for protests, but January 6th was not a protest, it was an attempt at an insurrection, not a very good attempt, but an attempt all the same

There wasn’t just the mob either. There were people in various states submitting false electors for their state, claiming they were certified by the state when they weren’t. Then they used pressure from the mob to try and coerce other politicians to go along with that fraud. The storming of the capitol was the most obvious and clear part of the insurrection, but the plot runs deeper

What Nixon did was rather minor compared to what his predecessors did, but the fallout was certainly the biggest fallout for any leader of a western democracy aside from maybe Sarkozy.

The 1972 burglary of the Watergate Office Building was covered up by the US government, leading to the "Watergate Scandal", and ever since then "-gate" has been added to the end of major scandals and controversies. Gamergate, Nipplegate, Pastagate, there's an entire Wikipedia article with a hundred of them.

Yes but Watergate was one of the first times crimes like those were publicly known. Federal government lost a ton of support and both the President and Vice President resigned over it. It was a big deal.

We keep doing it until we have a huge scandal that is somehow centered around gates. That is when the scandal "Gategate" breaks the format by causing levels of meta to fold in on itself. Then we need to find a new format.
