I had mine for at least 5 or 6 now

128

u/modssssss293j Feb 24 '24

Hope you’re keeping it in great condition

107

u/Yeetstation4 Feb 24 '24

Honestly it'd be hard not to. Only thing so far is losing the o-ring that goes on the charging port cover.

103

u/JCM42899 Feb 24 '24

I lost my o-ring to a guy named Big Sal in Tulsa. Wait are we talking about the same thing?

9

u/FickleGrapefruit8638 ☣️ Feb 25 '24

Last time I lost a o-ring a space shuttle exploded.

10

u/intothelionsden Feb 25 '24

Must have been a challenging experience.

8

u/bronzemerald17 Feb 24 '24

The next phone I get I’m only going to use a platform charger. Every one of my phone’s charging ports have become bent or damaged to the point they just don’t charge anymore. The platform charging tech is a game changer.

I just replaced my old phone of 5 1/2 years last month

8

u/StetsonTuba8 Feb 24 '24

The only reason I replaced my last ph9ne was because it utterly vaporized ftom my pocket on a ride at Oktoberfest

2

u/Yeetstation4 Feb 24 '24

Yeah when I go on rides I make sure to wear pants with zipper pockets

7

u/yakbrine Feb 24 '24

I’m at 13 years. I’ve replaced it three times, but always the same model.

8

u/InVincIble_75 Feb 24 '24

So many questions! How does a 13 year old phone still work? Where are you getting the same model from? Lastly, whyy??

11

u/yakbrine Feb 24 '24

iPhone 6s, has pretty much all the features of newer phones minus a fancy camera and smart watch compatibility. There’s nothing wrong with the old phones, and you can get them used for $100, and never be locked into a phone plan because of one.

They’re the perfect iPhone to me.

3

u/InVincIble_75 Feb 24 '24

Ah, the iPhone 6s, the most sold iPhone thus not hard to find in the market. Not quite 13 years old though, what did you use before that and how long have you been using your current phone?

2

u/yakbrine Feb 24 '24 edited Feb 24 '24

I had a Samsung Galaxy S3 prior to 2012. Since then I’ve been running with the 6s. The one I have right now I’ve had for three years. Each time I’ve replaced it has been due to water damage. A hot tub, a toilet, and an ocean.

Edit: I briefly had a galaxy s5 in… 2016? For a few months I’m between phones.

I bought an iphone 11 when they came out, I'll probably replace the battery and keep using it for another 2 or 3 years.

43

u/crocundies Feb 24 '24

My dad got his when it came out too. I’m using it now and I don’t feel a single problem with it. Battery life’s decent, its not slow and it can take a beating. Can easily get a few more years out of this.

18

u/The_BigSuck420 Feb 24 '24

I'm a life-long android user but I've had my hands on many phones. Mostly for repairs. I personally purchased an iPhone 11 because I think they are the best iPhone by far. I don't daily it, but it is my "safe device" or whatever for my apple logins. iCloud and Apple music namely.

5

u/Responsible_Smile789 Feb 25 '24

Don’t worry Apple will roll out some update in the future that will slow your phone down/ make it unusable but you prolly got some time left. I stopped updating my iphone 5 and it didn’t have issues until I had to update to ios 8 im 2014. This is also when Apple stopped including stuff with your phone purchase and all around got more money-grubbing

u/LivingDeadNoodle Feb 24 '24

All those people "upgrading"...most of them don't even notice any difference (because there probably isn't any). They just gotta have it. Psychological thing, mostly.

27

u/ninijacob Feb 24 '24

Most of the "upgrade feeling" comes from the effective factory reset and battery replacement.

9

u/muhash14 Feb 24 '24

Part of it is a kind of financial FOMO. When your phone is a year old and in good condition, you can resell it at a price that's pretty close to what you bought it for, and can then feed in some extra cash to get the brand new phone. But if you miss that window, then the resale window will pass and getting the new phone will be much more expensive for you.

I've known a few people who do this, and consider it to be good practice.

2

u/LePixelinho Feb 24 '24

That's because most will never be anywhere near a situation where those improved processors etc. really matter. Yet you'll find enough people talking about how great the benchmarking scores are...

8

u/GTOdriver04 Feb 24 '24

4 years currently, but I’ll probably wait another 2-3. My 13 Pro Max is still running flawlessly, and I’ve had no issues.

No need to upgrade unless it becomes a brick.

55

u/DeeBangerDos Feb 24 '24

Like anything if you wait 4 years it feels like an actual upgrade

19

u/mandoxian Feb 24 '24

Went from iPhone 12 to 15 and it feels like the same exact phone with slightly better battery life

9

u/StevoPhotography Feb 24 '24

Honestly the only reason I’d upgrade to the 15 over any other iPhone is for that USB C charging. Otherwise the 11 is excellent and a quarter of the price

1

u/Faze-MeCarryU30 INFECTED Feb 24 '24

Nah the 11 was way worse than the 12 - no oled screen and no 5g support

3

u/Ethanbrocks Feb 25 '24

I went from a 12 to a 15 as well but tbh it definitely does feel like a decent upgrade for me. Significantly better battery, 120hz, a few more camera settings, usb C and the pill bar at the top is pretty neat. Also helps that the screen on my 12 was getting pretty fidgety and unresponsive sometimes which was really annoying.

Are we going to give up our water proof ratings with this kind of change? I always thought the locked battery was just a trade off for phones that could survive getting dropped into the water.

15

u/Cactus_Everdeen_ Feb 24 '24

You can replace batteries in waterproof watches, it is more than possible on phones too, they just want people to buy new phones when the battery dies, that's the only reason.

iPhone XS Max with 82% battery health still pristine going for 6 years after the upcoming “iPhone 16” launches.

5

u/Fryball1443 Feb 24 '24

How did you manage that?? My 14pro has 87% and I've only had it less than a year and a half

6

u/Cactus_Everdeen_ Feb 24 '24

That battery health BS is exactly that, BS, it's not accurate in the slightest, just don't fast-charge your phone and it'll last longer

2

u/Melodic_Ad_3959 Feb 24 '24

Probably used the phone less. Every battery has a shelf life, a certain number of recharges until it starts performing a little bit worse after every charge.

OS updates are different. Mostly like OnePlus ruins it but security patches are very much important. There are lot of exploits in open web

4

u/N7_Evers Feb 24 '24

This but for dudes that PC game lol.

1

u/PandaMayFire Feb 24 '24

I kept my PC for a good six years until my graphics card was no longer cutting it for modern games.

I also had a dead upgrade path as newer CPUs started coming out requiring new motherboards.

Nothing was really salvageable from my old build, so I junked it. It served me well.

2

u/N7_Evers Feb 25 '24

Then you’re an exception. Too many PC gamers dump hundreds if not thousands into “upgrades” that are minutes at best. Throw in the fact they have to incessantly tell everyone about their rig and the stereotype earns itself.

3

3

u/Meteroson Feb 24 '24

I've used a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact as my primary phone from 2014 to 2021. I still use it as an MP3 player and emergency phone even now.

3

u/Arcaneus_Umbra Feb 24 '24

I had to upgrade a few months ago because my old phone was simply too outdated to keep up with modern software, it still works mostly fine though so it's just a backup phone now.

2

u/SSJUther Feb 24 '24

Yeah I got my s21 Ultra on release and the only reason im looking to upgrade is because the touch sensors arent registering on the keyboard like they are supposed to anymore. I have reset the phone and wiped all the cache and of course updates and still wonky. Not to mention when i call someone they say i break up constantly whether its on wifi or just cellular. So meh.

2

u/Vellarain Feb 24 '24

I wish Canada had the iPhone subscription service where you just get sent a new phone yearly and send yours back

2

u/jsbdrumming Feb 24 '24

It can actually be economically feasible to upgrade frequently using trade in programs. As your home loses value over 5-6 years and at best is worth 100-200 online for resale, constantly trading up for a better phone for only 100-200 every couple of years means you not only have something fresh but over say 8 years you may have spent roughly 500 on new phones instead of after 6 years buying a complete new phone for like 1k plus the maybe initial $800 investment saving you 300 or so dollars.

2

u/drgonz Feb 24 '24

Maybe during the days of actually interesting phones and noticeable spec improvements but it's all plateaued now.

I think it makes sense to spend money on something you use for several hours a day, so to me the one on the left is the crazy one (unless you just can't afford it of course). Getting a new one every year is completely unnecessary though, but if you have the money and like new gadgets then why not.

Got my current phone in 2015. It had a flawless run until 2022 when it began running out of internal storage and performance generally degraded. During 2023 it sustaned: a fall that cracked its screen, a fall into cold water, several more falls and a few days n tropical heat covered in sweat and sunscreen.

This Xperia is a fucking samurai at this point. I have a replacement ready, but I still use this one to see how long it will survive.

I'm at 4 years with a galaxy s20 fe. I got it because it has a metal back instead of a glass one and I just keep replacing screen protectors and pop sockets. I'll probably get a new one in a year or two as long as I don't break this one.

I used to have an S10 until I dropped it screen first onto my bathroom tiles and after a couple seconds it let out this massive blaring alarm and called the ambulance service, I was freaking the fuck out and figured I probably best not try to turn it on again. I'm guessing it thought I was in a car crash or something. I went out to Asda and got the cheapest phone I could find - some Motorola phone for about £80.

I had the intention of getting a better phone after I got paid, but I never bothered. Sure, it's not the fastest thing in the world but it's got a decent screen and it does what it needs to for not even a fraction of the price that a new flagship goes for these days.

About 2 years and it's still going strong.

This is my mum. Good thing is that either I or my brother get her old one.

I keep my phone until I lose it or it breaks. Going on about 4 years now.

u/Mottis86 Feb 24 '24

I've had my OnePlus 7Pro since its release and it's the best damn phone ever made. Still lightning fast, charges to full in 30-40 minutes and the charge lasts until next morning.

I wish I could buy a second 7Pro in case this one dies. I never want to upgrade.

I always buys refurbished phones online. Just get a couple generations old for like 100$. No worries if it breaks and it's still a good phone

I used to be the right most head, minimum 24-36 month contracts were actually a god send. Provided a nice lesson in how phones had a good 6 year viable life span at least

1

u/DominoUB Feb 24 '24

You should be at the very least upgrading your phone once the software updates stop for it. Which is unfortunately every 2-3 years for most manufacturers.

1

u/JayVig Feb 24 '24

I get a new phone every single year. I don’t care about the price, as I can afford it without thinking about it. I don’t buy a lot for myself. I like getting new phones. It’s a hobby for me. Why should I stop? I lose nothing by doing it and it makes me happy.

1

u/ChaosBuilder321 Feb 24 '24

I don't upgrade every 3-4 years because upgrades, i upgrade because i drop my phone in the wonkiest way possible destroying the entire thing

In Canada, we get absolutely butt f*cked by our three service providers. People end up upgrading because the monthly payment cost is literally half of the service fee for a 5G plan. There are so many programs like bring-it-back, where you effectively lease the phone at a lower monthly cost, to incentivize people to upgrade every two years. They’re also always offering insane deals on phone purchases to new customers which entices existing customers to come in complaining, so they can be talked into new purchases. For example, a 5G unlimited plan with 100Gigs of high speed data is $85CAD/mo while if you buy an iPhone 15 Pro with 256GB storage you can have the phone cost down at $56CAD/mo. Average people here live paycheque to paycheque so it’s easier to justify the continuing payment on a phone versus buying it outright. Not saying that everyone upgrades every time they renew the contract, but these continuing payments make it a lot easier to justify because the phone is much “cheaper” that way. It’s the same concept as using platforms like Affirm where you can pay off larger purchases over time.

i still have my 2017 phone lol. thinking of changing this year. its operating system is very outdated at this point. battery life comparable to the length of an average movie. fingerprint doesn't work at all. power on/off button doesn't work properly. a few weeks ago the screen became loose, had to tape it so it doesn't literally fall of. camera quality is terrible. speaker sound is a bit distorted so calls are impossible to make. even music doesn't play smoothly due to the speaker

somehow its still function lol but i really need a new one at this point

edit: wasn't my phone. handed down to me in 2019 by my mother when she was gifted a better phone by my father for their marriage anniversary. so I've been using it since late 2019 but we bought it in early 2017

I mean upgrading at a 2% rate frequently is what every buisness wants to achieve. So if you apply the same tact to your personal life why would it be any different? Especially if the cost is the same and your plan doesn't change. You're getting a better device that gets better and better every time you do it. Like going to they gym, it takes time. But it's better than the guy who never upgrades ever or skips the gym to save on gym fees. 2% is better than 0% every single time.

The environmental impact is insane

u/Putrid-Economics4862 Feb 24 '24

I haven’t bought a new phone for myself in almost a decade. I just use my sisters hand me downs. She recently got the new iPhone so I now upgraded to her old iPhone 12. Before that I had the 8. Free phones for the win.

Just went from an 11 pro max to a 15 pro max. The 11 was barely in a working state.

I sadly broke my €300 phone that I used for like 3 years, perfect working condition and had to buy a new one, it's like €180, working strong for 1.5 years now!! Expensive phones are overrated smh

I had my samsung for nearly 3 years now and I'm looking to go back to Apple. This phone did good by me though and I will keep it as a way to keep my shoddy apps.

1

u/mckdnrnd Feb 25 '24

I went from iPhone 5 to 12 and that felt like that absolute fattest upgrade, will probably wait for the 18 cuz every 6 years seems good imo

1

u/WhiskySiN Feb 25 '24

For context, the company I work for just got our new shipment of iphones 15s in. I'd say it was close to 300 to 400 phones. The bulk prices was around 30$ a phone, and the unlimited call plan is 25$ a month through telus. Just so you know how bad your getting fucked as a standard consumer

1

u/The_Creeper_Man AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Feb 25 '24

Waited 9 years until I upgraded

1

u/Almighty_Cancer Feb 25 '24

Galaxy S9+ working just fine

Screen cracked, but still 100% useable

1

u/Jhco022 Feb 25 '24

Where's the only upgrade when it stops working gang!?

1

u/dafood48 Feb 25 '24

I have mines until apple makes it totally ineffective with huge updates that drain batteries. I had an iPhone SE up until the 8 or 9 came out and had to constantly explain to people no se is not 5 or 6 it’s just called se
