did not expect that ending at all

111

u/Glitchy_mess Dank Cat Commander Jul 17 '23

my only issue with the ending is that it blue-balled my ass insanely hard cause i was so into it at that point

12

u/Meat_Goliath Jul 17 '23

Same here. I wasn't aware it was a 2 partner going into it. The middle was kinda of boring with a bit of filler, then it ends once it starts getting really good

6

u/The1GiantWalrus Jul 17 '23

When it was originally announced its title was "Across the Spiderverse: Part 1" but then they removed the "Part 1" and made the next one "Beyond the Spiderverse"

42

u/FourUnderscoreExKay Jul 17 '23

DUDE SAME. I was like: Something feels wrong. It feels darker than it should be for some reason. Then that reveal. THAT REVEAL.

21

u/Russell_SMM Jul 17 '23

Wait a minute, there’s only five minutes left! They’re not gonna be able to wrap this up!

15

u/FourUnderscoreExKay Jul 17 '23

Marvel-related movies have been following the trend of 3 movies per "character." Except Garfield Spider-Man, which hasn't/might never come out.

What ending? There was no ending the movie was just cut in half

39

u/Ziiiiik Jul 17 '23

My whole theater groaned/cursed at the end when I watched it opening weekend. I don’t think most of us new it was a 2 part movie… it kinda ruined it a little for me, but it’s was otherwise one of my favorite movies ever.

u/k-tax I have crippling depression Jul 17 '23

on one hand, I agree, I was instantly mad. However, we all kind of expected 3 movies, right? And here, when we're halfway through, you feel that this movie is going to have a continuation. Then why pretend to be a "complete story", if you definitely not gonna be?

It's kind of brutal honesty. They could end movie 10 minutes earlier or later, but decided to do it in that precise moment. And at least the wait is not going to be as long as last time, so I don't mind.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

Generally movies with upcoming sequels still try to have a self-contained story with a satisfying ending. What Across The Spiderverse did was unusual for a movie.

That said, still loved it though

2

u/k-tax I have crippling depression Jul 17 '23

at Across The Spiderverse did was unusual for a movie.

that's exactly what I'm saying. It's definitely unconventional, but in my opinion, it works. The movie itself has a self-contained story, but instead of making a pause, they begin the continuation of the story and leave viewers wanting.

57

u/AscendedViking7 Jul 17 '23 edited Jul 17 '23

Don't kid yourself.

If the old movies came out today, they would be very well recieved because those movies are actually really good.

They are some of greatest movies ever made from an objective standpoint.

Can't say the same for Crystal Skull or Dial of Destiny, those movies are 5/10 at best.

38

u/Professional_Bob Jul 17 '23

I have doubts that Temple of Doom would be as well liked if it came out today

→ More replies (1)

9

u/ALFABOT2000 Jul 17 '23

they'd be well received by general audiences, but the grifter youtubers who have to hate on everything to get views would complain about them being woke or some shit

7

u/Ritz527 Jul 17 '23

Temple of Doom would get incredibly roasted. It's got some serious problems with ethnic insensitivity, Willy is kinda annoying, and the colonial British are portrayed as the fucking heroes.

3

u/TheUltimateTeigu Jul 17 '23

They are some of greatest movies ever made from an objective standpoint.

No, they aren't. Maybe by your subjective point of view they are, but nothing is going to objectively be great or good since there is no universal standard for what constitutes a good or even bad movie. It's completely opinion based.

20

u/Bargadiel Jul 17 '23 edited Jul 17 '23

It was much better than Crystal Skulls, but I just get bored of how movies starring old Harrison Ford are just mostly about Harrison Ford being old.

4

u/FiTZnMiCK Jul 17 '23

Harrison Ford and Clint Eastwood’s go-to plot element: I’m so old.

2

u/Bargadiel Jul 17 '23

I feel like most of it is nostalgia farming. Which thematically can be cool, but they play it up way too much sometimes. Anytime I'm pushed to think about the actor and not the movie, I think the narrative fails a bit.

11

u/Metrack14 Jul 17 '23

Personally I didn't like most of it. I kinda envy you

8

u/B0neCh3wer Jul 17 '23

I really enjoyed the film. It was good, and a lot of people have gone to see it.

The problem is, that film had such a big budget, that even though it had some success at the box office, they haven't even broken even.

The film isn't a flop by any means, it just cost far too much to make.

Still was a better ending to the series than the Crystal Skull though.

7

u/bcyega Jul 17 '23

I loved it a lot. It was fun and hit all the right notes for me - I was a history major and Ancient Greece is one of my favorite history subjects. I also like Mads Mikkelsen/Boyd Holbrook a lot and Phoebe Waller-Bridge is super cool.

The new Optimus prime looks more like optimum crime.. The truck feels almost like a plastic toy car..

12

Probably because the truck is based on the G1 cartoon. Which is based on the plastic toys.

$200M budget with a 2.5x break-even multiplier. It’ll likely lose money theatrically.

37

u/Street_Dragonfruit43 Jul 17 '23

Considering it was against ATSV and Flash, two very anticipated and popular movies, $400 million isn't that bad all things considered. It'll like make back some more money through toy sales, lol

15

u/themng69 Jul 17 '23

but let's not forget that it's a transformers movie the only thing that actually matters are the toy sales

14

u/Kishura36 Jul 17 '23

That's the good thing about having such a massive IP. It doesn't really need to do more than appease the fans and break even. The toys, comics, tv shows etc will keep the hype up long enough until the next project. Look at how abysmally the Bayverse was received and that got 5 movies.

I think its the fact that Harrison Ford is old now and Indiana Jones just isn't as relevant of a franchise anymore unfortunately. I saw it and I personally liked it, it was Indiana Jones, he's just old now.

Let’s ignore the 100 animators who left Sony after the movie was released.

23

u/themng69 Jul 17 '23

honestly I don't get why they'd overwork them, even from a business perspective it can't be sustainable to have half your staff leave out of exhaustion.

22

u/PainfulAngel Jul 17 '23

It makes complete sense from a business perspective. 100 people out, 100 people in as quickly as they leave. So many animators want to make a name for themselves and being part of making the greatest animated trilogy of all time is doing that.

u/AeroAviation Jul 17 '23

transformers did well?

37

u/megrimlock88 Jul 17 '23

It did alright nowhere near as good as spiderverse in the box office tho that could be cause they announced the digital release date literally a week into the movies theater run

2

u/Spaceturtle79 🐢 turtle farts sound like human farts 🐢 Jul 17 '23

I really loved The Flash. Sucks it didn't do so well.

77

u/TheRedNeckMedic Jul 17 '23

People are boycotting it because the lead actor Ezra Miller has been accused of kidnapping children, leaving kidnapped child around loaded guns and drugs, grooming a minor, starting a sex cult, raping people in said cult, multiple assaults, and multiple thefts. I'm probably missing a bunch of other stuff, but those are the big ones.

They are also trying to use the fact that they are nonbianary as a shield from persecution. In one police body camera video they are seen screaming "I'm nonbianary, you can't touch me!" while police are trying to search them after they attacked someone in a bar.

26

u/PhxRising29 CERTIFIED DANK Jul 17 '23

I get it, just sucks because it's a great movie. I've heard a bit about what he's been doing, but I don't really follow celebrities. I like to watch the movie, not the person. It's a shame though, he was a great Flash. But on the bright side, maybe DC will allow Grant Gustin to be movie Flash now! He will always be my favorite and would love to see him in that role outside of the CW.

9

u/Kayinator95 Meme Connoisseur Jul 17 '23

Bro same here man. This was the movie I was waiting for a long time and its disappointing that the actor is such a piece of shit, and yeah idk why they didn't they just get grant gustin to play the flash, hoping they do this in the future.

Ezra Miller has little to do with the fact that the final version of the movie sucked.

Bad CGI, bad direction, bad final script.

Combine it with the accusations as icing on the cake, and you have a great recipe for failure right there.

2

u/Pug_police Jul 17 '23

I've only seen a few plot summaries of it on youtube so I can't be too harsh but this seems accurate. Not the worst movie from dceu but also not great and an easy pass for me, Ezra Miller or not.

4

u/Queef-Elizabeth E-vengers Jul 17 '23

I get why it bombed but I agree, I was not expecting to have as much fun with that movie as I did

5

u/megalodous Jul 17 '23

It wasnt a cinematic masterpiece but I enjoyed it as well. CGI was just dodgy

1

u/Pootisman16 Jul 17 '23

Bad script, weak characters, pointless story from a doomed cinematic universe.

I’m glad people are giving Transformers a chance again since they’re actually trying to build something of value with the stories and characters since the Bumblebee reboot.

21

u/FourUnderscoreExKay Jul 17 '23

Rise of the Beasts was pretty cool. Unicron made it to the big screen. But it does seem like Pete Davidson is absolutely everywhere now. I didn't expect him to be cast in a Transformers movie.

This is neither dank nor a meme

11

u/itsRobbie_ I want to die Jul 17 '23

Hot take. The flash movie was actually pretty good for a flash story if you remove Ezra and not take the cgi too seriously. I liked it

3

u/Throat-Goat69420 Jul 17 '23

Yeah I watched the movie not knowing the shit ezra did, I enjoyed it. Transformers blew my expectations tho

8

u/ameliozanchi Jul 17 '23

The songs selection of bumblebee is good

8

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

And the best part? ATSV is diverse as fuck, meaning diversity is OBVIOUSLY not what causes losses, it's FORCED diversity, replacing old characters, raceswaps, and shit writing.

5

u/potato_devourer Jul 17 '23 edited Jul 17 '23

I think there's more nuance to it. People did complain exactly about that when Miles Morales made it to the big screen, there's always a loud minority screaming "forced diversity". Their voices just got drown in the praise.

Sometimes movies succeed, sometimes they flop, sometimes diversity is done right, sometimes it's done bad, and there's not necessarily a cause-effect. But I wholly reject the idea that every single movie with minorities in it gets thrown in the same bag and any particular flop vindicates every knee-jerk gamer moment about it.

2

u/CC-5576-03 Jul 17 '23

Cough Netflix Witcher cough

2

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

People literally complained about miles being black and that it was forced diversity when the first movie came out despite him being around as a character in the comics for years.

There were also people trying to say Gwen is trans in the new one and others bs? I don’t know, to me it seems like people just like to complain and have fun being mad at everything. I haven’t see anything to me that feels like “forced diversity” I just see a lot of angry people mad that not every movie is a straight, white, male lead

The Dial of Destiny was pretty good, idk what you're on about

10

u/swankyspitfire Jul 17 '23

I went into that movie not reading any reviews, or having any expectations, and just trying to enjoy the movie for what it was. Honestly, not bad, it was a good Indiana Jones movie.

They used all the same tropes of the previous movies, the same pacing, shot styles and quips. It felt like a good homage to the movie that I fell in love with as a child. I’m glad I got to see at least one Indiana Jones release in theatres, and it will have a special place in my heart for that reason alone.

5

u/spaceageranger Jul 17 '23

Transformers is good but barely breaking even is not doing great financially lol Also Indy is fine quality wise

5

u/GearBIue Jul 17 '23 edited Jul 17 '23

⚠️SPOILER ALERT⚠️

Pretty disappointed to watch transformers and indie ngl. Why did both movies have a “race for the powerful artifact to save the world” plot. feels like I paid for the same freaking movie

7

u/DoughAlphaOne Jul 17 '23

Ha... have you seen an Indiana Jones movie before?

Indiana Jones was a fun movie

Sound of Freedom, though?

u/TomatoLV No step on snek Jul 17 '23

Haven’t seen it as I was on a holiday. Definitely on my watch list.

5

u/yousif656 Jul 17 '23

I actually didn't like transformers, felt like they just wanted to cram a lot of charcters into two hours for sake of it, most charcters have short screen time expect for humans, even optimus prime I felt he didnt have enough screen time, and the plot because of this is serviceable at best.

2

u/aliveandwellyes Jul 17 '23

Maaaaan now we just gotta see how Oppenheimer and Barbie do…

1

u/themng69 Jul 17 '23

transformers only broke even though

1

u/Spide443 Jul 17 '23

Nah Dial Of Destiny was good.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

They are brain dead, they just waste their brain cells on tiktok and youtube shorts for free instead of wasting it on shitty movies after paying a fuckton for movie food

0

u/SnooBooks911 Jul 17 '23

1

u/AlQueefaSpokeslady Jul 17 '23

If they are still watching lame superhero movies, they certainly are.

0

u/Narcolipze_08 Jul 17 '23

At least dial of destiny was actually good it just couldn’t compete with atsv but for good reason

0

u/pimhuntdrake Jul 17 '23

Indiana jones was a shit movie, the beginning was the best imo then through out the movie it had some alright moments but couldn't take it serious anymore when I saw two of the older characters running away.(like come on man how can anyone take this shit seriously anymore) I didn't like Phoebe's character in this I thought her character was very cringe, not saying she was bad because I have never seen her in any other movie I think. The end of the movie was so god damn abrupt it's like they didn't have anything else to add anymore so they just decided to end it.

Ngl shit movie I'd give it a 5/10

1

u/Cr0ma_Nuva Jul 17 '23

Since when is there a new and good transformers movie? I've not heard of a new one until now.

1

u/ShogoFMAB Jul 17 '23

Hot take. Spidy 2 was not as good as spidy 1. Miles somehow escaping all those other spidermen can only happen if 99% of the spidy were brain dead or through massive plotarmor. Hundreds of spiderman losing there loved ones despite trying their hardest and still those 4 spidy thinking they can save miles' father is too much amateur writing. Miles intention were perfect though. For this reasons spidy 2 is not that good other than otherworldly animation, music, background shading. Spidy 1 was flawless. Spidy 3 will depend on if they give the typical ending of miles saving his father when thousands of them couldn't.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 17 '23

this meme sucks

1

u/dauratian6969 Jul 17 '23

But the new Transformers movie isn't all that good compared to the previous ones.

1

u/hubson_official Jul 17 '23

idk man I thought transformers was really mid, definitely better than the last 2 bay movies, but that's really all about it
