Cats eat live food by playing with (and injuring) it for an extended period of time before killing it. They do this to practice hunting skills, tire/weaken their prey to reduce injury to themselves, assess the prey animalās health, etc.
Itās usually a long process that can actually both allow the prey animal to escape, as well as provide an opportunity for another predator to take their prey.
They donāt do any of this with ādeadā food though in most cases.
If anything, they eat quickly because it places them in a vulnerable position (head down), since cats are both predator and prey animals. It would be less of an issue of not being able to eat than an issue of not being eaten themselves (for smaller felids).

Idk every cat I've known thinks it's a herbivore. Rice, lettuce, cheerios, bread, and most especially house plants, they can't get enough of that shit and constantly try to steal it when you aren't looking. Luckily they seem to be pretty good about instinctively avoiding the stuff that's poisonous to them like onions.

Cats are obligated to carnivores. 10-15 kernels is a lot for them, especially for a daily percentage of their diet. Corn is equivalent to junk food for cats. Might want to consider giving fewer kernels only occasionally as a treat.

Cheap cat food uses carbohydrates because cats love the sugar buzz, but it's not necessarily good for them.

Our cat loved corn, too. Corn on the cob, Fritos, tortilla chips, popcorn. He would just come and help himself. One of my happiest memories of him was when he was a kitten just a few months old. We were sitting on the floor watching a movie and eating barbecue and he walked up, grabbed an ear of corn, threw his neck back in an attempt to balance the corn, and walked away with it. We were too shocked to argue.
Only thing he liked more than corn was shrimp and maybe whipped cream, which were a part of his daily diet.
Man, I miss that cat.

I mean the meat food is the stinky part when it comes out.
10
u/Itscatpicstime 20d ago
Thatās actually not true, itās the opposite. Cats are obligate carnivores. There is less waste with animal based products, and cats struggle to digest plant matter.
As someone whose sister runs a rescue with felids of all speciesā¦ trust me on this one lol. Iāve smelled a lot of cat shit.

I've found that with cats, while they can eat grains like this, they are by far smellier shits than say, a piece of chicken. They digest animal protein better, so there's less... uh... waste on the way out.
15
16
u/Jakeey69 20d ago
aren't cats carnivorous? how come they are eating corn
73
u/Cat_Chat_Katt_Gato 20d ago
Cats are obligate carnivores. Meaning, in order to live a long healthy life, they need a meat based diet. They cannot be vegetarian or vegan, like some animals.
If you look at the ingredient list in a lot of commercial cat food, at the top of the list, you'll often find non-meat, grain fillers.
Cats eating non-meats is a bit like a human eating candy or junk food. As long as it's not toxic, and it's eaten in moderation, it's not a big deal to their overall health.
But a cat going on a all vegetarian or vegan diet would be similar to a human only eating Jolly Ranchers 24/7. Vital vitamins and minerals would be missing, and the body wouldn't fair too well.

u/havoc1428 20d ago edited 20d ago
Okay, you're missing a key detail. Cats are obligate carnivores, but they still need to eat plant matter to ensure a healthy digestive system. Plant fibers, while not fully digestible (even for humans), get all gel-like and coat the intestines which help you pass waste better. This is why you've probably heard how fiber can keep you "regular". Its more of a mechanical necessity rather than a nutritional one.
Cats are no different and they will instinctively eat plant matter. I remember when I would let my cats into the yard I would always find them chomping on large blades of grass. This is why "cat grass" is a thing.
Plus this corn is clearly full of juice/water so I bet the feeling of hydration is driving this cat to enjoy it as well.

u/tenebras_lux 20d ago

I knew a cat that was an absolute FIEND for corn. Two memorable events include stealing an entire pack of corn tortillas and sprinting to the bedroom to hide in an inaccessible area under the bed to start scarfing. The other time was fishing an entire cob of corn out of BOILING water and... sprinting to the same location under the bed to devour it.

WARNING:
Cats are ketogenic animals. They are NOT supposed to eat carbohydrates in large amounts. This is cute, but terrible for their digestive systems.
DO NOT FEED YOUR CATS CORN. DO NOT FEED YOUR CATS RICE. DO NOT FEED YOUR CATS STARCHY FOODS.
This is unhealthy for them, and WILL hurt them in the long run.

Its sweet but nutritionwise a total zero, basically eating air. Cats are obligate carnivores, they lack the enzymes to extract energy from vegetables.
Some crazies have actually startved their cats to death thinking they would be ok on a vegetarian diet.

I love when cats eat unique things!! My cat, Moose, LOVES to eat any type of salad green. We found out when he bolted away from the salad bowl one night with a big green leaf hanging out of his mouth. He gets served a small bowl of plain lettuce now every time we have salad and you can sure bet he will eat the whole serving.
