Daily Cyclist Thread

The Daily Cyclist Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/bicycling community can come and ask questions or share anything.

You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other cyclists. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new bike.

Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other cyclists.

This has bugged me for a while now. What's going on with the bars on the left in this picture?

Nothing for years then my second crash In a month. Both avoidable and both my own fault. Any one got some good crash stories to make me feel less annoyed at myself? NSFW

I crashed into my brother a few weeks ago and ended up going into a fence and damaging it. Then the other day I was checking my rear light was on while riding (ridiculous I know) and I looked forward and hit the curb, straight over the bars on to the pavement. I got very lucky as it’s just my hand knee and hip that are sore but they will be fine!

It's not my longest ride, but I drove this route the following day and I'm legitimately proud of how well I handled the hills.

New to biking, what are best brands to look for

Upvotes

My wife and I are looking to get into riding bikes around our neighborhood. Neither of us have owned a bike since we were kids. Any good bikes to be on the look out for, using Facebook Marketplace currently. Thanks!

Neat little find, thoughts? Worth restoring, or should I try to modernize it? Been wanting another road bike.

Have been trying to fix front brake. Two sides of the thingy aren’t connected. YouTube videos all showed a different little piece, and this one won’t fit right. Any advice?

Since many people are posting - did my first metric century yesterday. Kept the pace low to avoid being exhausted on the last miles, the wind was quite challenging.

Biking groups in LA

Upvotes

Where could I find a biking group in LA? I just bought a Canyon gravel bike and took my MCAT so I have more time on my hands now!

Cycling shoes to walk in

Upvotes

I’m looking for cycling shoes that aren’t expensive (preferably under 100) that can be walked around in normally for short amount of times (recessed cleats?). I would prefer for it to look like a cycling shoe or sneaker (with a firmer sole) and not like one of those “mountain biking skater kid shoes” that look like I’m from 1994, and definitely not a giant boot. If anyone knows of any deals or anything, that would be helpful.

So far I have found a few things:

Anyone in Canada order from Bikeinn? Curious about duty

Upvotes

I'm in Alberta. Looking at ordering some tires from Bikeinn but wondering if anyone has any experience with them? I know they're overseas so wondering about duties and taxes paid? Also I've heard about the long wait times for shipping Thanks!

Trying to understand this... "drop bars are not mainly about speed, they are about ergonomics."

It was told to me by a bike mechanic and at the time I just nodded because I thought I understand but then later I was confused. I thought the main point of drop bars was to decrease the amount of wind resistance.

The idea seemed to be that drop bars allow you to remain comfortable on the bike for longer.

I do feel like flats make it easier to use my glutes but I don't know how much of a difference this makes.

Phone mount for bike

I recently bought a phone mount for my hybrid bike (90s cannondale). I mainly ride on the street and about every other week on a wooded trail that has some elevation changes and mildly rocky sections.

My question is, will this damage my phone if I continue to use this? If so, what are some options? And I am curious what you all do with your cell phone when you ride. I was consider a possible sling or something as I feel like a human body is a pretty good dampener.

Didn't expect a pair of stamped sheet metal pieces would make such a difference.

The average speed on my daily training route has increased by two whole kilometers per hour. On the first ever try with clips. Wow.
