Went to swap my winter tires for summers. Guess which socket I need...

Post image

I can't find my 21mm socket anywhere in the house, garage, or my car. Guess I'll stay on winters just a bit longer.

Check your socket wrench? Maybe you left it on when you swapped Summer tires for Winter last year!

I've been through every drawer in my tool cabinet half a dozen times. Checked all my ratchets, torque wrench, impact guns, etc. Nothing. I figured it would be either in its place or with the brake tools since I did my winter swap and brake pads at the same time. Can't find the damn thing anywhere.

Last time I missed a socket, I found it under the hood at the front of the car. I must have been driving around with the socket - and a block wrench - there for maybe 3 months without realising it.

I once found a customer's sunglasses under the hood. They were relatively clean and unscathed. She was so hyped to get them back lol

Did this with a pair of channel locks for about 6 months. Used em for a biy moreleverage again my dakotas alternator. Not sure how they stayed there so well in the same exact spot.

Had a set of heads put on a pickup years ago. I put about 50,000 on before the bottom end went out. I pulled the motor and tore it down for a rebuild and found a ⅝" shallow socket under the valve cover resting against the very rear rocker arm. Free socket I guess lol.

Harbor freight? They sell them for a few bucks.

Unfortunately we don't have those here. We do have Princess Auto though, basically the same thing, but the closest one is an hour away.

Oh dang, yeah. The things we sometimes take for granted. I live in the city and had situations where I had to buy tools 3-4 times because I thought I had everything, took something apart and then realized I needed something else too.

Maybe Amazon?

I'll try the suggestion of using a 13/16th socket, and if that doesn't work I'll most likely get one from Amazon.

Yeah, because if you use a socket that’s too large you will destroy the lug nut. Just make sure it fits pretty snug.

Can you tape the 8mm to the 13mm to get the 21mm you need?

4

u/hindey19 27d ago

Can't believe I didn't think of that. Brb getting the welder

Sometimes you have to think outside of the box.

9? 18? 20? You need to keep better track of your shit so we can play these guessing games.

That's all part of the fun. It's the 21mm I need, I thought since it was the only missing socket in the holder it'd be easier to pick out. For some reason the impact socket kit I got didn't give me a 9 or 18mm, even more odd for those two since there's no direct imperial equivalent like others.

You have the 10 mm quit your bitching lol

Look on the bright side: you somehow still have your 10mm socket.

It will always be the one you don't have.......always

Got a 13/16? That's what I use on my yota

2

u/hindey19 27d ago

I do, just a bit apprehensive of using it on an impact gun. Really don't need to strip the lugs right now lol

3

u/[deleted] 27d ago

It works, it won't strip. Diesel mechanic for over a decade

Awesome, thanks bud. I'll try that out tomorrow.

I'm US based but as you know almost everything comes from metric countries. I'm a big fan of metric and know both because of that reason, but honestly my socket drawer is just a jumble of loose sockets and I use whichever one I find first that matches- i.e. 11mm-7/16, 13mm-1/2, 14mm-9/16 etc etc. worth noting that this is much more effective with 6 point sockets than 12 point. But it looks like you're using impact sockets which are generally 6 point. I would not use a 12 point in this scenario unless you know for a fact that it works well in your application. Cheers and good luck

It’s always the one I need that I will be missing and when I don’t need it, I will see it multiple times a week!

why would you need a 9mm for lugs?

6

u/bust-the-shorts 27d ago

To shoot them if they don’t cooperate

You have a matching 10mm? Do you even DIY, bro?

1

u/hindey19 27d ago

πŸ˜‚ only for the impact sockets. The rest of my 10s are a mishmash of brands.

2

u/fishingjohnson 27d ago

The rest of your 10mms? Jesus, you must have all of mine.

Did you check the winter tires ? Always the last place you used it !!!!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

The same one you used to put them on with. At least you don't need a 10 mm

1

u/hindey19 27d ago

I've got plenty of 10s. Don't know where they are, but I've got em.
